Student Motivation, Necessary for Student Success.
Rick Wormeli in his article Motivating Young Adolescents says that “carrots and sticks won’t make students learn”. One of the ways we can increase student motivation is to empathize and build trust with them. Building relationships with students will make students more motivated to work in classes where they know they can take academic risks. One stable relationship with an adult on campus can make all the difference. Another way to increase student motivation is to incorporate social interaction into the content, allowing the students to collaborate with each other. Giving students descriptive feedback is another way to increase motivation. Middle and High School students are constantly measuring themselves against their peers and their
family in all facets of their lives. The majority of students want to know how they are doing compared to their peers. Giving specific timely feedback allows students to make improvements. This strategy works in all areas of their lives. Next time your student comes home with a graded project sit down and give them specific feedback on what they did well and then feedback on areas they could improve. Ask them to reflect on their accomplishments and areas that they feel they could make improvements. Students also respond positively to connections made between their classes. They respond to foreshadowing, middle and high school students are naturally curious. Real life application of learning has a positive effect both in and out o the classroom.
Finally, parents and teachers need to understand that middle and high school students have a lot going on in their lives. They may be involved activities outside of school that they spend hours on or they may just simply lack the skills to complete a task. They may be working to help support their families to put food on the table, or they may have to take care of younger siblings in order for their parents to provide for the family. Whatever the circumstance, they are not intentionally being “lazy” they may be working hard outside of school, or they are frustrated. Lets ask ourselves, what motivates our students and work hard to engage them in their learning both in and out of school.
