Chapter of Excellence 2011-2013 Inside this issue:
President’s Message— The snow is finally here! The winter is actually my favourite season, although I hate the extreme cold, I really enjoy the snow. Also, I love watching Christmas movies. My favourite Christmas movie is "The Polar Express" but I also love "It's A Wonderful Life" and "White Christmas ". My husband isn't really a Christmas person. I had to fight with him recently to help me put up our Christmas tree. If he had his way there would be no lights, no tree, no Christmas movies! Although he considers "Die Hard" and "Die Hard 2" Christmas movies! I know the holiday season is extremely busy for us, but I
encourage all members to take some time for themselves and attend our Chapter meeting next Wednesday (December 11). We will have some wonderful silent auction prizes, we will be taking a group picture and we will be learning about safety and security from Constable Lori Fahey. If you have not already RSVP'e with Lianna, please do so by Friday December 6. I hope to see everyone there and look forward to celebrating the holidays with you!

Pounding the Pavement How to Ward Off Job-Search Frustration
You’re about to enter the job market with an impressive resume, a confident interview style and a “go-get-’em” attitude. But even with all these things in your favor, the reality today is that it could be months before anyone makes you a viable offer. The longer the job search goes on, the more likely you are to become frustrated — and your “go-get-’em” mentality might get up and leave. Initially you may feel up to the job-search challenge, but a long dry spell can take its toll on your confidence, making the situation seem hopeless. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep from falling down the rabbit hole during a prolonged job search. Following are three tips to keep the job-hunting blues at bay: Rethink rejection. Getting a “thank you for your interest” form letter after a promising interview — or worse, never hearing anything at all — can be demoralizing. But try hard not to take it personally and let it derail your efforts. Instead, take a fresh, objective look at your techniques and strategies. Maybe your quest for the “ideal” job is holding you back. If your dream of working at a large firm has not led to a job offer, for example, it might be time to broaden your options and consider smaller businesses. Make job-hunting a job. High achievers often feel like they’re in limbo when unemployed. To counteract this mindset, aim for a certain level of productivity each day in your job search. Set specific goals for yourself, such as writing and submitting five resumes on Monday and meeting with at least three business contacts by Friday. Applying a work mentality to your job search will give you a sense of fulfillment and bolster your morale. Call in the cavalry. Consider consulting with a staffing agency. Well-connected recruiters can help point you in the right direction by offering advice on things like how to improve your resume and what types of positions you may be best suited for. They can also place you in temporary assignments enabling you to make contacts with employers who eventually will be looking for full-time professionals. Although at times it may seem unlikely, eventually you will find a job that’s right for you. You can’t control how long your job search will take, but you do have control over how you handle things in the meantime.

November President’s Message—Judith Vannarelli, CAP-OM
My husband and I were recently in the airport security line, when suddenly a small hand entered mine. When I looked down, there was a munchkin, who I subsequently learned was three years old. His is name was Francisco. I guess as a past pre-school teacher, I have that “look;” whatever that is. As the line inched forward, he was ready, willing and able to have a conversation. He was wearing an information tee shirt that was the best I’ve seen in a long time and it fit his age category perfectly—EAT. PLAY. SLEEP. REPEAT. The perfect philosophy for a three-year old, as he confirmed that’s what consisted of his every day. Except this day he was going to Walt Disney World, so the shirt needed to be edited to read—EAT. PLAY. MEET MICKEY. SLEEP. REPEAT. I thought of that shirt often over the past weeks in the realm of IAAP members. We would need to add two words onto our shirt to read EAT. WORK. VOLUNTEER. SLEEP. REPEAT. It’s not as simple as Francisco’s; however, the words speak volumes in our members’ world. IAAP is not just a professional association. IAAP doesn’t exist without the thousands and thousands of volunteer hours (the gas) that keeps IAAP (the engine) moving forward. Where would we be without all of you? Stagnant, is one word that comes to mind. Volunteerism is the backbone of our association. And, let’s not forget, that our member volunteers don’t only volunteer for IAAP but also schools, churches, community, and scout troops—you name it. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2011, the number of volunteersreached its highest level in five years hitting 64.3 million. Americans volunteered a total of almost 8 billion hours, an estimated economic value of roughly $171 billion. Whew! I’m tired just thinking about those numbers. Please let me salute the IAAP volunteers who so unselfishly share their time, energy and passion for the association. There is no dollar value that can be placed on the total hours; therefore, those hours are invaluable. Clap, clap, clap. Bravo!! Switching gears, but still seeking the attention of our volunteers, the IAAP Board of Directors and the regents of The Foundation of IAAP just returned from their fall meeting in Milwaukee, Wis. If you haven’t visited Milwaukee, you are missing a treat. What a beautiful city. This was my third visit. When I was three years old my Dad had a band and they actually played at the Hilton City Center, which is the host hotel for EFAM 2014. I don’t have any memories of that trip; however, I visited again last October, when the Wisconsin Division invited me to present at their leadership and educational conference. I was very impressed then, even more so now. Only fifteen minutes from the airport, the Hilton City Center is a four-diamond jewel in the Hilton crown. Restored to its turn-of -the-century beauty, you’ll find the Miller Time Pub, The Oak Room, and Starbucks. There’s a climate-controlled walkway from the hotel to the Wisconsin Center, where all the sessions will be held. Attendees are going to embrace this city – it’s safe, friendly, and easily accessible from all parts of the US and Canada. IAAP’s TEC14, March 13-15, 2014, Atlanta, Ga. is open for registration. After the success of TEC13, staff has worked diligently, using the attendees’ feedback, to create an intermediate and advanced curriculum. Atlanta is also a great city with a vast landscape of sites to explore. Visit www.atlanta.com to begin planning your visit. November 11, celebrated as Veterans' Day in the US and Remembrance Day in Canada, observes the signing of the World War I armistice and acknowledges all citizens who serve or served in armed conflicts, respectively. We give our respect and admiration for those men and women who served and continue to serve home and abroad to keep us safe and out of harm's way. Finally, the holiday season is approaching. In the US, Thanksgiving, which our Canada members celebrated last month, is a time for family, friends, and to give thanks. From our home to yours, our wish is for all of you to enjoy the day and receive the bounty of good fortune, health, and prosperity. And once again, to all the IAAP volunteers, on behalf of the board of directors and headquarters’ staff, you are appreciated more than words can express. Have a relevant month. We’ll talk soon.
