Sept. 14 | 4 p.m. (CT) Moscow, Idaho | Kibbie Dome | 14,071

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Northern Illinois kicker Mathew Sims made a 36-yard field goal with four seconds on the clock to give the Huskies a 30-27 season-opening win over the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium.

MOSCOW, Idaho – Spurred on by an aggressive defense that recorded ninequarterback sacks, Northern Illinois scored the final 10 points of the game to claim a hard-fought 45-35 victory over Idaho in the Kibbie Dome.

The kick gave NIU its first win over the Hawkeyes in nine tries, and it came in comeback fashion as Northern Illinois trailed throughout much of the second half, and faced a 27-20 deficit to start the fourth quarter.

After trailing 28-14 with 9:35 to play in the second quarter, Northern Illinois outscored the Vandals 31-7 the rest of the way to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2003. Huskie quarterback Jordan Lynch and wide receiver Tommylee Lewis both went over the 100-yard mark in rushing as Lynch totaled 159 rushing yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns and Lewis ran four times for 104 yards.

Sims’ field goal came after safety Jimmie Ward intercepted Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock on the 50-yard line with 1:24 to play and the game tied 27-27. Ward, who was playing with a cast on his left hand, returned the ball to the 30yard line. From there, two runs took the ball to the 19 and after a timeout, Sims was true on his third field goal of the game. The NIU defense gave up just 156 yards in the second half. Iowa scored only a 44-yard field goal by Mike Meyer, which gave UI a 27-20 lead with 6:42 to play. NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch, bottled up on the ground all day, went to the air. He engineered a six-play, 75-yard drive that took just 1:37, hitting Angelo Sebastiano for 27 yards to start the drive. After three completions to the Iowa 33, Lynch found Da’Ron Brown in the corner of the end zone. With 5:05 to play, the game was tied 27-27. Brown caught five passes for 92 yards to lead NIU, while Sebastiano added five catches for 69 yards and Tommylee Lewis had five grabs for 82 yards. Iowa got the ball back and advanced to the Huskie 48-yard line, but was forced to punt and after NIU went three and out from its 18-yard line and punted, Ward’s heroics gave the Huskies another chance. Northern Illinois scored the first 10 points of the game. Sims opened the scoring with a 47-yard field goal at 7:33 in the first quarter, and Lynch hit Lewis with a 40-yard score. Iowa scored a defensive touchdown as Christian Kirksey picked up a Huskie fumble and brought it back 52 yards, cutting NIU’s lead to 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. Iowa put 17 points on the board in the second quarter, beginning with a 28-yard field goal by Meyer. After NIU was forced to punt, the Hawkeyes used a 53-yard pass on a flea-flicker from Rudock to Jordan Cotton to the NIU 12. Rudock hit tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz from 11 yards out for Iowa’s first lead, 17-10. The Huskies tied it at on their next drive when Lynch hit Lewis from 21 yards out, but Iowa responded again and went into halftime with a 24-17 lead. SCORING BY QUARTERS Northern Illinois Iowa

DEKALB, Ill. -- After trailing 20-0 midway through the first quarter, Northern Illinois University came back to earn a 43-39 victory over Eastern Illinois in front of a sellout crowd of 23,595 at Huskie Stadium.

W. LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The NIU Huskies became the first Mid-American Conference team to defeat two Big Ten teams in one season with a dominating 55-24 win over Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Jordan Lynch threw for 235 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 189 yards and Cameron Stingily added 134 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch completed 14 of his first 15 passes, including 11 straight. He finished the first half with 16 completions in 20 attempts for 195 yards and three touchdowns as the Huskies led 27-10 at the break.

A 10-yard pass from EIU’s Jimmy Garoppolo to Erik Lora with 9:53 to go in the fourth quarter gave Eastern Illinois a 39-36 lead, its first of the second half. Garoppolo threw six touchdown passes in the contest while going 34-of-49 for 450 yards. Lora caught 14 passes for 198 yards, including three scores. NIU answered on the ensuing drive, going 62 yards in four plays on the ground to retake the lead. Stingily’s 46-yard carry set up an eight-yard Keith Harris Jr. touchdown two plays later.

NIU forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, and scored on a 62-yard interception return by safety Jimmie Ward and a 99-yard kickoff return by Tommylee Lewis in the second half to thwart any chances of a Purdue comeback.

After forcing Eastern Illinois to punt, NIU got the ball back with 5:04 left and ran out the clock with its longest drive of the game. Facing third-and-11, Lynch found tight end Luke Eakes for 21 yards and a first down, allowing NIU to take a knee and claim their 22nd consecutive victory at Huskie Stadium.

Behind the precision passing of Lynch, Northern Illinois scored on its first five possessions of the game. Kicker Mathew Sims earned the first NIU points of the game with a 44-yard field goal, before Lynch hit Da’Ron Brown from 15 yards out for the first of Brown’s two TDs. Sims made it 13-7 with 13:39 to play in the second quarter and after the NIU defense forced Purdue into a three-and-out, Lynch hit Juwan Brescacin for 41 yards to the Boilermaker 26-yard line. Five plays later, the duo hooked up for a four-yard touchdown and a 20-7 NIU lead.

EIU jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first 7:30 of the game as Garoppolo hit three different receivers for touchdowns. Northern Illinois responded by going 60 yards in eight plays for its first score. Stingily finished the drive with a fiveyard run, the extra point was missed as the Huskies trimmed EIU’s lead to 20-6.

Dechane Durante made the first of his two interceptions on the day and returned the ball 50 yards to the Purdue 29. From there, Lynch hit Brown from 17 yards out for the 27-7 Huskie lead. Durante ended the Boilermakers’ next drive as well, intercepting quarterback Rob Henry in the end zone.

A Marlon Moore interception returned the ball to NIU and from their own four, the Huskies marched 96 yards in eight plays to trim the Panther lead to seven, 20-13, a minute into the second quarter.

Purdue got a 47-yard field goal before halftime to cut the Huskies lead to 27-10, but Lewis quickly quashed any Purdue comeback hopes as he took the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a score, his fourth career kickoff return touchdown.

One possession later, a 32-yard run by Lynch set up first-and-goal; he hit Eakes on the next play to even the score at 20-all. The Huskies took the lead before halftime when Mathew Sims converted an 18-yard field goal attempt for a 2320 lead. NIU increased its lead to 10, 30-20, on a nine-yard touchdown run by Harris Jr., with 10:17 to play in the third quarter. Eastern Illinois answered with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo to Lora, cutting the NIU lead to four, 30-26, after the PAT snap was botched. The Huskies marched to the EIU one-yard line before a penalty forced NIU to settle for a field goal, pushing the lead to seven, 33-26, with 2:50 in the third quarter. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Garoppolo threw his fifth TD pass to even the score, 33-33, before Sims’ third field goal put the Huskies back on top. NIU 27, AKRON 20

Oct. 12 | 4 p.m. (CT) | ESPN3 DeKalb, Illinois | Huskie Stadium | 23,595

KENT, Ohio – Junior Cameron Stingily ran for 266 yards on 37 carries and the NIU Huskies totaled 698 yards of total offense, 454 on the ground, to claim a 38-24 victory over Kent State in its 2013 Mid-American Conference opener.

DEKALB, Ill. -- The 23rd-ranked NIU Huskies earned their 23rd consecutive Huskie Stadium victory, defeating Akron 27-20 before a Homecoming, sellout crowd of 23,595. The win set a new MAC record for consecutive home victories, breaking a tie with Marshall (1997-2000).

On a rainy afternoon, Stingily punished the Golden Flashes, often dragging two and three defenders as he compiled the most yards by a Huskie running back since Garrett Wolfe’s NIU school-record 353 yards versus Ball State in 2006. NIU piled up 698 yards of total offense, the third-highest total in school history. The Huskies’ 454 rushing yards were the eighth-most all-time. In addition to Stingily, quarterback Jordan Lynch had 94 yards on 14 carries, while James Spencer gained 42 yards on six rushes. After falling behind when Kent State quarterback Colin Reardon hit Tyshon Goode with a 28-yard pass to put the Flashes ahead 28-24 in the third quarter, the Huskies outscored KSU 17-0 the rest of the half. Lynch directed a 10-play, 84-yard drive that took 4:05 off the clock with all but 11 yards coming on the ground. The Huskies took the lead for good on a 22yard run by Spencer, who relieved an injured Keith Harris in the second quarter. The Huskie defense forced Kent State to punt. Starting from its six-yard line, Stingily, Lynch and Spencer marched the Huskies downfield. Lynch hit Tommylee Lewis, who led the Huskies with eight catches, for 13 yards on third and 12 to the Kent State six. NIU also overcame a holding penalty from the one before Lynch hit Spencer with a screen pass for the touchdown and an 11-point lead, 35-24. Kicker Mathew Sims put the final points on the board with a 31-yard field goal with 7:28 to play to cap a 10-play, 56-yard drive. Kent State had one more shot and advanced to the NIU 12-yard line. Four passes went incomplete and the Huskie offense took over with 4:17 to play and collected three more first downs rushing to all but run out the clock. A driving rainstorm limited the scoring early as neither team generated offense in the first quarter. NIU took a 7-0 lead on a Stingily 17-yard run, but Kent State’s Dri Archer provided an immediate answer, taking the kickoff back 100 yards for a touchdown and a 7-7 tie. Lynch hit Da’Ron Brown on a 53-yard completion midway through the second quarter to give NIU a 14-7 lead, but KSU answered as Reardon completed a 66yard touchdown pass to Archer. NIU went to the ground game to take a 21-14 lead with Stingily scoring from the one. Kent State earned a field goal to cut the lead to 21-17 at halftime. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Quarterback Jordan Lynch scored three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and the No. 17 (BCS) Northern Illinois University Huskies scored touchdowns on its first five possessions en route to a 63-19 victory over the University of Massachusetts Saturday at Gillette Stadium.

DEKALB, Ill. – With the Mid-American Conference “Game of the Year” between NIU and Ball State tied at 27 with less than six minutes to play, the NIU Huskies, behind quarterback Jordan Lynch, scored 21 points to defeat Ball State, 48-27, on Wednesday night. Stingily’s touchdown run was set up by an interception by defensive tackle Ken Bishop, who stepped in front of a screen pass at the UMass 20 and ran 14 yards to the six-yard line. The Huskie defense allowed UMass to score just one touchdown – on a oneyard run by Lorenzo Woodley in the second quarter. Minutemen kicker Brendon Levengood made four field goals of 40 yards or longer. NIU had a field goal blocked and twice turned the ball over on fumbles in the third quarter, but got back on track in the final period as back-up quarterback Drew Hare led the Huskies to a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Hare connected with true freshman running back Chad Beebe on an 81-yard pass play, the longest pass play by a Huskie quarterback since August 30, 2008 when Chandler Harnish completed a 91-yard pass to Nathan Palmer versus Minnesota. Brown finished the game with eight catches for a career-best 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns while fellow junior Tommylee Lewis finished with a teamhigh 12 catches for 71 yards. The Huskie defense, which held Ball State to three points in the second half, stopped BSU running back Jahwan Edwards on fourth and one at the NIU 44yard line; Jimmie Ward and Joe Windsor combined on the tackle. Getting the ball back with 3:47 to play, the Huskies used four running plays to reach the Ball State 25. Two plays later, NIU found the end zone on a 16-yard rush by Lynch, giving the Huskies a 41-27 lead with 1:26 left. NIU put the game on ice 40 seconds later as Windsor intercepted a Keith Wenning pass and returned it 49 yards for another Huskie score. NIU opened the scoring with a 34-yard field goal by Mathew Sims, but the Cardinals answered with a 12-play, 72-yard drive, capped by a Wenning to Willie Snead three-yard touchdown pass. The Huskies responded with a 78-yard drive as Lynch put NIU back on top with a two-yard touchdown run. Edwards, who finished the game with 156 yards on 29 carries, ran six times for 51 yards on the ensuing drive to help the Cardinals retake the lead, 14-10, with 10:08 to play in the half. Wenning capped the drive with a quarterback sneak from a yard out as the Cardinals regained a four-point edge. In the last five minutes of the first half, the teams combined to score 20 points. NIU got a 20-yard field goal from Sims to cap an 11-play, 43-yard drive that took 5:08, before Ball State scored on a five-yard run by Edwards. The Huskies answered one play later with Lynch hitting Brown, who split a pair of tacklers and ran 58 yards to the end zone with 1:13 left in the half. BSU added a 43-yard field goal by Scott Secor 48 seconds later to take a 24-20 lead into halftime. SCORING BY QUARTERS Ball State Northern Illinois

The Huskies clinched the MAC West Division title and its fourth consecutive appearance in the Marathon MAC Championship game.

DEKALB, Ill. – Jordan Lynch ran for 321 yards, breaking his own NCAA FBS record for rushing yards by a quarterback, on 27 carries with three touchdowns as the NIU Huskies defeated Western Michigan, 33-14, on a frigid, snowy Tuesday night at Huskie Stadium.

Lynch gained 131 yards on 15 carries in the second half and scored on touchdown runs of 12, 31 and one yards. His final touchdown run came with 9:38 to play and capped a 15-play, 99-yard drive that consumed 5:18 on the clock. Lynch ran for 62 yards on the drive, which put the Huskies ahead 28-17. On the first possession of the second half, NIU drove 85 yards in six plays and 6:33 to take a 14-10 lead. Lynch hit Juwan Brescacin on completions of 11 and 32 yards, and Jacob Brinlee added a 27-yard catch. With starting receivers Tommylee Lewis and Da’Ron Brown sidelined by injuries, Brescacin caught a career best eight passes for 121 yards in the game. In the second half, the NIU rushing game won the day. as the Huskies ran for 268 of their 364 rushing yards after halftime. In addition to Lynch’s yards, Cameron Stingily had 146 yards on 18 carries and Ohio native James Spencer added 32 yards and two rushing scores. He scored the Huskies’ first and last touchdowns including a one-yard run that iced the game for NIU with 5:39 to play. After Toledo took a 17-14 lead on a 36-yard pass from QB Terrance Owens to Bernard Reedy with 8:34 to play in the third quarter, NIU responded with a sixplay, 65-yard drive capped by a Lynch 31-yard run for a 21-17 Huskie lead. The Huskies went into halftime trailing 10-7 after Owens hit Alonzo Russell with a 45-yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds left in the half. NIU forced three turnovers in the first half on interceptions by Jimmie Ward and Boomer Mays and a forced fumble by George Rainey, but scored just seven points off the turnovers. Mays’ first career interception came in the end zone as he picked off running back Kareem Hunt’s pass and returned it to the NIU 10-yard line with 6:27 to play in the second quarter. The Huskies then drove 52 yards to the Toledo 23, where Mathew Sims’ 40-yard field goal try was wide right. Rainey forced a Toledo fumble on the first play of the game to give the Huskies the ball on the UT 21-yard line. Three plays later, Spencer ran in from 21 yards out for a touchdown and a 7-0 NIU lead with 13:34 to play in the first quarter. Two UT possessions later, Jimmie Ward tipped Owens’ pass to himself and made the diving interception to give NIU the ball on its own 22. “Obviously the elements played a huge factor in the game,” said NIU head coach Rod Carey. “It was tough for both teams to throw and kick. I am really happy with the win. You run the ball like we did in those conditions, and score the points that you have to, and then hats off to our defense. We had some guys out with injury, and we held them to just 14 points, so overall I’m really pleased.” Lynch’s 321 yards bettered his previous career high of 316 set on Oct. 19 at Central Michigan. He also became the fifth quarterback in FBS history with 5,000 career passing yards and 4,000 career rushing yards. Junior running back Cameron Stingily rushed for 49 yards on 14 carries, eclipsing the 1,000-yard plateau for the season. Lynch and Stingily have become the first duo in school history to reach 1,000 yards in the same season. NIU opened the scoring as Lynch found sophomore wide receiver Juwan Brescacin from 10 yards out to give the Huskies an early lead. The Brescacin touchdown capped an 8-play, 80-yard drive that also featured a Lynch connection with freshman Aregeros Turner for 23 yards on a key third down. The Broncos pulled even, 7-7, on the opening drive of the second quarter. Dareyon Chance finished the drive with a touchdown run from a yard out to finish a 12-play, 63-yard drive for Western Michigan. The Huskies responded just 87 seconds later, going 75 yards in six plays to regain a seven-point lead. Lynch found the end zone with a 29-yard scramble for the score, giving NIU a 14-7 lead with 9:43 to play in the half. The senior quarterback from Chicago also had rushes of 19 and 15 yards on the drive. After forcing a three-and-out from the Western Michigan offense, NIU increased its lead to 20-7 as Lynch found the end zone again on a 36-yard carry. It took the Huskies just five plays to go 77 yards and increase their lead to 13 points going into the half. On their first drive of the second half, the Huskies used 7:29 to go 78 yards in 18 plays, capped by a 23-yard Mathew Sims field goal as NIU took a 23-7 lead. Lynch found the end zone again with 1:36 to play in the third quarter, giving NIU a 30-7. Lynch went up the middle for 37 yards and the score on a one-play drive that gave the Huskies a 23-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Sims added a 32-yard field goal and Western Michigan’s Antoin Scriven scored from a yard out in the final period as NIU capped its fourth consecutive undefeated season at Huskie Stadium. DETROIT – The NIU Huskies saw their goal of a third consecutive MAC Championship and dreams of a second BCS bid dashed at Ford Field Friday, as the Bowling Green Falcons scored a decisive 47-27 win in the Marathon MAC title game.

SAN DIEGO – The NIU Huskies’ offense could not get untracked against Utah State in the 2013 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl game, and despite a valiant effort by the NIU defense, the Huskies fell to the Aggies 21-14at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif.

The loss ended the Huskies’ school-record tying 12-game winning streak and 26-game conference winning streak as NIU fell to 12-1 on the season, while Bowling Green improved to 10-3 overall. The Falcons’ No. 7-ranked defense held NIU to just 235 yards on 40 attempts despite 126 yards by quarterback Jordan Lynch. Meanwhile, BGSU quarterback Matt Johnson completed 21-of-27 passes for 393 yards and a MAC Championship game record five touchdowns. Lynch compiled 345 yards of total offense with 126 rushing and 219 passing yards, breaking the NIU records for touchdowns responsible for and touchdowns scored in a season, while tying the school mark for rushing scores. He threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Brescacin for the Huskies’ first score and ran for touchdowns of eight and two yards. The two teams traded touchdowns on their opening drives with the Falcons scoring on a 28-yard hook-up from Johnson to Tyler Beck, while the Lynch to Brescacin connection tied the game at 9:08 in the first quarter. Bowling Green took a 17-7 lead at the end of the quarter as big plays continued to hurt the Huskies. Johnson hit Ronnie Moore for 61 yards, setting up a 26-yard field goal by Tyler Tate, and after NIU went three and out on its next possession, Bowling Green came back with a five-play, 76-yard touchdown drive with Moore scoring on a 36-yard catch.

With its second straight loss, NIU ended the season with a 12-2 record while Utah State finished 9-5. The Huskies lost back-to-back games for the first time since suffering losses to Kansas and Wisconsin in consecutive games in 2011. Lynch completed 20-of-35 passes for 216 yards and one touchdown and ran the ball 18 times for 39 yards and a score. NIU had more first downs (19-17), more passing yards (216-121) and more total yards (315-289) than the Aggies. The statistics were deceiving, though, because USU was able to shut down Lynch and the Huskies in the second half. After halftime, the Huskies tallied only five first downs, 21 rushing yards on 13 attempts, and 60 passing yards on 6-of-17 passing. NIU went three-and-out on three of its five possessions in the half, with only a successful conversion on a fake punt preventing four consecutive three-and-outs. Lynch said Utah State grabbed the momentum after he threw an interception on the first play of the half and the Aggies did not allow the Huskies to get it back. In addition to the offensive woes, NIU had several special teams miscues as kicker Mathew Sims missed a pair of field goals - from 37 yards in the first quarter and 29 in the fourth - and punter Tyler Wedel had a 17-yard punt in the early going.

The Huskies cut the deficit to 17-13 after field goals of 51 and 45 yards by kicker Mathew Sims. However, BGSU scored two touchdowns in the last six minutes to take a 31-13 lead into halftime as Johnson connected with Heath Jackson on a 22-yard pass and hit tight end Alex Bayer from 12 yards out.

The Huskie defense, meanwhile, kept Northern Illinois in the game, even with their backs against the wall. After Wedel’s punt gave Utah State the ball on the NIU 29, the Huskies forced USU to attempt a 52-yard field goal that missed. When a Lynch fumble gave the Aggies field position at the NIU 46 in the first quarter, the defense stopped USU at the 14 and forced a 31-yard field goal.

Lynch and the Huskies narrowed the margin to 31-20 when the Huskies marched 64 yards on seven plays and 2:29 and scored on an eight-yard run. Both kickers missed field goals in the third quarter before Tate hit a 54-yarder at the start of the fourth.

In addition to Ward’s interception, senior defensive tackle Ken Bishop recorded his second interception of the season, giving the Huskies field position at the Utah State 14 early in the fourth quarter. After two plays netted just two yards, Sims missed from 29 yards.

BGSU put two more touchdowns on the board in the quarter while the Huskies could manage just a late Lynch score to leave the final score at 47-27.

Utah State’s first touchdown came off of Lynch’s interception and the final touchdown was scored after NIU’s third straight offensive three-and-out. The Aggies grinded out a 16-play, 80-yard drive that took 7:19 off the clock in the fourth quarter that looked to put the game away.
