November News Room 10 Mrs. Carruthers’Class October was such a busy month with many activities focusing on our cooler fall season which has really begun to show its colour and give our class many good topics for daily writing. Earlier in the month our grade ones were busy with learning about the harvest and all the reasons to feel thankful. They practiced letter and word spacing while writing their ideas about feeling thankful on turkey feathers. In mid October they chose a scarecrow colouring page and as they gradually coloured it, they wrote sentences describing the many coloured parts of it. Then later in the month they used their ideas as they filled in some reading passages about a scary house that matched their drawings in windows and doors of their own paper houses. This reminded them the importance of picture clues and text clues matching each other. I hope you got an opportunity to listen to or help your child read the ‘thankful turkeys’ and ‘scary house’ projects taken home. We are enjoying their scarecrow writing on display in our primary hallway and hope you will too when you come in for Parent Teacher interviews.

Parent Teacher Interviews On the final Friday of October, your child brought home a form inviting you for an interview to discuss your child’s progress and next steps for improvements. Since the first November Friday is designated for interviews (no school) I am hoping to see you then (or another time soon if that is more convenient). Please send back the form or write a note if you haven’t already done so. Of course, your child is welcomed to attend too.

November News continued Literacy Homework and Home Reading I hope your child is establishing more comfortable routines to practice the 8 weekly individualized list words at home each week. Your support is appreciated as it makes a huge difference in your child’s confidence in mastering new skills. We have now started our homereading logs, and new books and log sheets are given on the same day your child meets with me to review their word lists. Besides the reading books your child chooses, reading pages (sent home some Fridays), paper booklets (usually sent home weekly) and other suitable books may be used for the Home Reading Logs. Again, the support you give your child at home impacts his/her reading confidence. Sharing Calendar A November calendar is being sent home with this newsletter. Students seem to be getting more comfortable with their calendar and weather presentations . I am encouraging them to preplan what they will talk about before answering questions from their audience.
