October Newsletter Grade 4/5 French Immersion Mlle Thomassian Portable 4 Dear Parents and Guardians, It is already October and we are into the swing of things at school. We are welcoming two new students to our class, Owen and Madison, this month. We are excited for you to be a part of our learning this year. Bienvenue les amis! AGENDAS/CLASS BLOG My primary form of communication with you will be through the agenda and the class blog. If you have not checked the blog out, please do so. I update it regularly and will be beginning to post pictures of what the students are working on. mllethomassian.commons.hwdsb.on.ca I will also be checking the agendas each day for any notes from parents, so please feel free to write to me with any questions or comments. We will write the important information each week in our agendas, so please make sure that you check. HOMEWORK My homework program has begun and I am pleased to say that students are making a consistent effort to complete their homework each week. A reminder that students are able to sign out books each week. It is my expectation that students fill out their reading log, and I will be checking it weekly. Please encourage your child to record all of their reading. The students are encouraged to read for 20 minutes each night, alternating between French and
English each week (one week in French, the next in English). Dictées Every week we have had a dictée. The students are starting to get used to studying for them each week. I am very impressed with their results! Great work! COVERED THIS MONTH/TERM Language This month I will be assessing their reading levels in French. We will be working on different reading strategies this month and will be setting reading goals and working towards achieving them. We will also be writing a few opinion pieces, where students will start to express their opinion on a certain subject, as well as provide evidence for their opinion. We are constantly working toward becoming independent learners who are advocates for their own learning.
