Helping Hands Volunteers needed A new year, for many, means 'cleaning house' of clutter from the past year. Did you receive small gifts you cannot use? Items such as soaps, towels, handbags, decorative items, etc. make wonderful donations for the TUC Flea Market, to be held March 15th - 16th, 2013.
February! Spring is just around the corner. I look forward to warmer days, cherry blossoms, and spring cleaning – both literally and spiritually. Let’s plan ahead and prepare our hearts for March, which is our busiest month. We have our World Day of Prayer, which will feature France this year, and our biggest fundraiser, the Tokyo Union Church Flea Market. We will need lots of help during the week of March 11, so please block off that week and join us. We begin on Sunday with table setup and continue on Monday with donating, sorting, pricing, and preparing. The pre-sale is on Thursday and the actual sale will be Friday and the early part of Saturday. Proceeds from this event go to the Tokyo Union Church's Outreach ministry to serve the homeless people in the Shibuya/Yoyogi area. Let’s all downsize our belongings and donate. Please sign up to be helpers and you will be eligible to pre-shop on Thursday. Just a few hours of your time will go a long way toward helping the homeless. Bring a friend or two to help and to shop, and most important – spread the word! Spring season at the Women’s Fellowship is definitely a season of serving. The Bible says “Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10). . Let’s reach out to those in need – through our prayers and through our actions! Many Blessings, Tomomi Kumagai Women’s Ministry Elder

Farewell Jo! Jo George announced at the January program that she is leaving Japan after 6 years. Her husband has accepted a position in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Jo will join him there at the end of January. Most of us don’t realise the amount of behind-the-scenes volunteering that Jo does at TUC, especially for the Womens Group. Paul Fukada acknowledged Jo’s amazing contribution to TUC, especially in regards to the Onigiri preparation. Paul read a moving citation and presented Jo with some Kappabashi Onigiri! From us all – Thank you Jo. You will be greatly missed!

"TRASH" or "TREASURE"?
How often have you heard the expression, "One person's 'trash' is another person's 'treasure'"? Those too tight shoes or sandals? Those gently-used household items or articles of clothing that you or your family members have outgrown or that never seem to get worn? A toy, game, DVD, or children's book? A back-pack, baby stroller, purse, or picnic hamper? Jewelry, scarves, linens, that clutter your closets or drawers? Think how good it feels to know that your donated items, clean & in good condition, might be just what someone else is looking for! From your generous donations FLEA MARKET profits benefit various charities, including our own MOHN, throughout the world. March 11th is just around the corner. Classical Japanese Games
---Hyakunin-isshu and Fukuwarai--In winter time and especially on the New Year days, some classical games used to be played at each family to spend the quiet New Year days or cold winter days at home. Hyakunin Isshu can be translated to “one hundred people, one poem (each)” and it is a (New Year’s) card game in which the players try to match the first and second halves of each of the One Hundred Tanka Poems by One Hundred Celebrated Poets. The authentic way of playing cards will be shown in the program and also another easy way will be shown to play together there. Another fun game is Fukuwarai (which means Lucky Laugh in English), it is a traditional New Year’s game especially played by children for its simple and easy rules, but definitely fun for adults as well. The players are blindfolded and place different parts of the face onto a blank face and laugh at the humorous results. Hope you can come and try these traditional fun Japanese games to laugh together! Friends welcome!
