Jack Anstey, So., Illinois State (Newtown Toowoomba, Australia)

At the prestigious Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California, Anstey continued his magnificent start to the 2018 outdoor campaign. Running in the 1,500-meter against some of the stiffest competition in the country, Anstey ran a personal-record time of 3:43.22 to finish 12th out of 63 runners. Not only does this mark rank ninth in the nation, but it is seventh in the NCAA West region and first in the Valley. Anstey’s time is also the second-fastest in Illinois State history; the only person who stands between him and the 1,500-meter school record is MVC Hall-of-Famer Christian Goy.

Ricky Hurley, Jr., Southern Illinois (Fox River Grove, Ill.)

Ricky Hurley tallied three top-3 finishes and a pair of top-10 school marks at the Mondo Team Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native won the hammer throw, took second in the shot put and placed third in the discus to score 24 points and help Southern win the men’s team title. In the hammer throw, Hurley won with a toss of 59’-8.25” (18.19m), which was the seventh-best throw in school history and he later took second in the shot put with the eighth-best mark in program history at 59’-8.25” (18.19m). Hurley and North Dakota’s Steffan Stroh are the only two athletes in the NCAA West Region to currently rank in the top-50 of all three throwing disciplines, as the four-time all-conference honoree ranks 13th in the west region in the shot put, 15th in the hammer throw and 46th in the discus. Hurley also holds the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference in both the hammer and the discus and ranks second in the shot put.

MVC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week Taylor Austin, Sr., Indiana State (Griffith, Ind.)

Taylor Austin ran the best race of her career at the Stanford Invitational in a blazing fast heat of the 3000-meter steeplechase which led to her breaking her own school-record with a time of 9:54.01. That time gave her a fourthplace finish and it overtakes her previous school-record of 10:02.89 by eight seconds, also pulling her to within three seconds of the overall Missouri Valley Conference record set in 2012 by Aisha Praught of Illinois State. She now currently holds the top time in the Valley, first in the NCAA East Region and fourth in the nation.

MVC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Erin Reese, RS-Jr., Indiana State (Mt. Prospect, Ill.)

During the first event of the day at Ole Miss, Erin Reese set the tone for the Sycamores. In a deep hammer throw field, Reese finished third overall, but she unleashed a big throw that gave her a personal-best and improved her second overall mark in school history to 62.34m (204-06). She leads the MVC, is fifth in the East Region and 15th in the country. The discus throw was also a good event for Reese, as she recorded a career-best in that event as well at 53.98m (177-01) which is fourth in school history, first in the conference, sixth in the East Region, and 18th in the nation.

MVC OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD WEEKLY RELEASE u Noteworthy In addition to the league’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week selections, several other notable performances are recongnized, ans they include:

in the 4x100 relay and added a sixth place finish in the 100m dash. Eason won the 200m dash with a personal-best time of 23.96, which marked just the fifth sub-24 second 200m time in school history. She later combined with Alicia Reed, Genesis Ewell and Bri’Anna Branch to clock a 4x100 relay time of 45.93, which was the fifth-fastest 4x100 relay time in program history.

MEN’S TRACK Haran Dunderdale, Bradley Competing for the first time in over a year (since winning two conference titles at the 2017 MVC Indoor Championship), Haran Dunderdale placed 12th in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational on Friday. The redshirt junior posted a time of 9:04.66, which ranks as the quickest in the Valley this season and the 46th-fastest in the country in 2018. Tristan Parmley, Indiana State Senior Tristan Parmley led the Sycamore sprinters by finishing in third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.54, only .03 away from second-place and he now leads the MVC. He also took fourth in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line at 21.23, which comes in at second in the Valley and 48th in the NCAA East Region. Warren Hazel, Southern Illinois Warren Hazel was Southern’s top point scorer at the Mondo Team Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State. The two-time national qualifier tallied 26 points, which included a win in the 400m and runner-up finishes in the 200m and 4x400m relay. Hazel won the 400m with a time of 46.91. The Old Roads, St. Kitts native’s time is the 11th-fastest quarter mile time in the west region and the fastest time in the Missouri Valley Conference. Alexander Bruno, Valparaiso At the Texas Relays, he finished first in one of the two heats of the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:52.11. That ended up putting him fifth overall in the meet. That time also moves him up to third all-time in school history. He also competed at the Bobcat Invitational where he finished fifth in the 5000 meter run in 14:55.28. That time moves him into fourth in school history.

WOMEN’S FIELD Brandy Thomas, Illinois State At last weekend’s Big Blue Classic, hosted by Eastern Illinois, Thomas captured her second-consecutive victory in the shot put, recording a winning-throw of 14.82m (48-07.50). Her previous mark of 14.93m (48-11.75) that she captured at Vanderbilt’s Black & Gold Invite on March 23 currently ranks third in the MVC and 38th in the NCAA West Region. Thomas also competed in the hammer throw at the Big Blue Classic, placing sixth with a season-best throw of 49.05m (160-11). Her mark currently sits seventh in the Valley. Daijha Heron, Missouri State Recording a new career best triple jump, Daijha Heron finished in second place at the ORU Invitational, with a 12.36 meter (40’ 6.75”) leap. Heron’s triple jump mark leads the Missouri Valley Conference and sits as 31st best in the west region. Heron also marked a 5.75m (18’ 10.5”) long jump that is tied for seventh best in the league and was good enough for a fifth place finish. Shauniece O’Neal, Southern Illinois Shauniece O’Neal helped SIU win the women’s team title at the Mondo Team Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State. O’Neal accounted for 16 points on the strength of runner-up finishes in the discus and the hammer throw. The Florissant, Mo. native opened with a PR in the discus at 156’-1” (47.58m) to take second and followed with a nearly 14 foot PR in the hammer throw at 190’-4” (58.02m) to also place second. Not only is her mark in the hammer the 27th-best mark in the NCAA West Region, but it is the second-best toss in the MVC and is well past the USATF Junior Outdoor Championship qualifying standard of 177’-2” (54m).

MVC Track & Field Athletes of the Week are selected each week during the Outdoor Track & Field season. The athletes are announced on Tuesday afternoon and appear in a weekly press release. Nominees are provided by each school’s sports information contact and voted on by a panel appointed by the league office.

u Scholar-Athlete of the Week

MEN’S FIELD Anthony McRoberts, Illinois State At last weekend’s Big Blue Classic, hosted by Eastern Illinois, McRoberts cleared a season-best 2.05m (6-08.75) to win the men’s high jump competition. His mark not only sits him atop the Valley, but seeds him 31st in the NCAA West region.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Scott Schreiber, Indiana State Scott Schreiber took home second-place in the long jump at Ole Miss, falling only to Illinois’ Jonathan Wells who is 40th in the nation, with a mark of 7.03m (23-00.75) which is first in the MVC.

u Championship Information

Grace Beattie, Illinois State At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in Hayward, California, Beattie finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase among 55 student-athletes, clocking in at a personal-best 10:29.97. After just her first 3,000-meter steeplechase race of the season, Beattie ranks second in the Valley, 19th in the NCAA West region, and 39th in the country. Her mark also improves her to seventh all-time in ISU history. Jessica Allen, Missouri State Jessica Allen took home event victories at the ORU Invitational this weekend. Allen recorded a victory in the 5,000-meter with a 17:18.81 time. The 5K mark sits as the second fastest time in the conference and 72nd on the west qualifying list. Allen’s other title came in the 1,500-meter where she ran a 4:43.90 time. Tyjuana Eason, Jr., Southern Illinois (Kankakee, Ill.) Tyjuana Eason helped SIU win the women’s team title at the Mondo Team Challenge Saturday. Eason scored 18 points for the Salukis as she won the 200m dash, helped SIU take fourth
