Shabbat 19th November 2016 Shacharit 9.00am Mincha 7.05pm Maariv 8.22pm
A word from the Rabbi One of the hardest challenges in personal growth and development is learning to tolerate people whose values are distinct and at variance with our own. In this week’s Parsha Avraham is frustrated by the wayward behaviour of his eldest son, Yishmael. Yishmael was not the biological son of Sarah and was corrupting his younger brother Yitzhak. Sarah insisted that both Yishmael and his mother Hagar be banished, aiming to prevent any further decay of the family. Although initially hesitant, Avraham does indeed send Yishmael and Hagar away providing them with food and water, but not money. Rashi explains the holding back of financial support was due to Yishmael's evil ways; he could not be trusted with money and Avraham 'hated' what he had become. Later in the Parsha Hashem tells Avraham to take us son to be offered as a sacrifice. Avraham answers, "but I have two sons ". Hashem elaborates "The one that you love". Avraham again answers "but I love them both"... Hashem then states "Yitzhak". So does Avraham love or hate Yishmael? We have to distinguish between who people are and what people do. Avraham hated what Yishmael was doing; his behaviour was destructive and corruptive. Avraham, refused to tolerate such a negative force within his household. But Avraham still deeply loved his son. He longed for him to correct his errant ways and to turn back to a path of righteousness. He hated what Yishmael did, but he loved who Yishmael was. We too mustn’t hate people, only hate the way they behave. Shabbat Shalom
