STEWARDSHIP September 10 - Proper 18 Matthew 18:4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” What does it mean to have childlike faith? Certainly Jesus does not want us to have faith that is childish: we are not called to ignorance or silliness. Rather, we are called to trust the way a child trusts: with complete confidence in the Father. We show that confidence in our lives when we follow His directives for our life: Father knows best, so we’ll take His advice! Witness: If you kneel before God, you can stand before anyone.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SUNDAY

As you well know, Hurricane Harvey has wreaked havoc in Texas and areas close by. We’ve seen the devastation on the news and we can’t fully understand what many are going through. Yet there are ways we can reach out with the love of Christ! Of course, many, many prayers are lifted up to the Lord by His people; but there are also opportunities to donate monetarily to help rescues efforts. Please see the insert about LCMS Disaster Relief.

On Sunday, September 24th, we welcome Rev. Dr. John Oberdeck, professor emeritus from Concordia University Wisconsin as our guest preacher. Ordained into the Holy Ministry in 1979, he has served as a parish pastor, seminary professor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and most recently at Concordia Wisconsin as a professor and Director of Lay Ministry, retiring this past spring. He has also taught courses in Youth Ministry and Theology, and is the author of the 2010 book, Eutychus Youth: Applied Theology for Youth Ministry published by Concordia Publishing House. Dr. Oberdeck will also be leading the Bible class that morning, and I heartily encourage you to attend! The study will be: 500 Years Later – Lutheran Education Today. Luther had a lot to say about education in his day, and for good reason. The pastors were ill-trained and the people uninformed about their own faith. Falsehood and superstition had to be overcome if the glory of the Gospel was to be delivered and believed. How would the reformers wrestle with the challenge? What can we learn from them as we face the challenges, perhaps just as daunting, in our day? Join Dr. Oberdeck for Bible study on September 24 as Luther’s time is compared with our own. SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School begins today. Thank you to the volunteers who are sharing God’s Word with the children: Tammy Julka, Hunter Schultz, Ed and Janet Hessler, Dana Raue, Renee Sutton, Tara Schultz, Ashley Hale, Corey Bender, Katie Bartelt, and Bethany Wellach. Join us in declaring “Jesus is my Superhero!” ALTAR FLOWERS Thank you to Judy and Al Beyer for the beautiful flowers in celebration of their 53rd wedding anniversary!

QUOTE FROM LUTHER

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - Matt. 18:1–20 (Sept. 10) “If I see something in him (i.e. my neighbor) that does not please me very much, I should pull back and take a look at myself. There I will find many things which do not please other people either and which I want them to pardon and tolerate. This will soon relieve the itch that tickles and enjoys someone else’s transgressions, and Master Smart Aleck will toddle along and stop passing judgment.” LW 21:215 American Edition (56 vols.; St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House and Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1955– 1986).
