REMINDER for ALL student-athletes, athletics department staff, and nonathletics department staff who have responsibility within or over athletics:
*You may not participate in sports wagering activities or provide information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition in sports in which the NCAA conducts a championship. *This prohibition applies to all practice and competition activities.
What is “Sports Wagering”? *Sports wagering is any bet on sports that requires an individual to give up an item of value in exhange for the possibility of gaining another item of value.
Risk + Reward = VIOLATION
*So, cash is not the only prohibited item used as a wager in gambling. It is NOT permissible to bet any other item that has tangible value (e.g. apparel, meals).
Penalties
*Student-Athletes—NCAA mandated penalities
*First Offense: Ineligible for at least one year and lose at least one season of competition & your scholarship may be reduced or cancelled. *Second Offense: Lose all remaining eligibility. Additionally, if you are involved in point shaving or other activities designed to influence the outcome or win-loss margin of a game, or solicit or accept a bet or participate in any gambling activity involving Weber State, you will lose all remaining eligibility immediately. Finally, your scholarship may be reduced or cancelled.
*Staff—Possibilities include, but not limited to: pay freeze, letter of reprimand or admonishment, suspension, restrictions placed on your athletics duties, and termination of employment.
*All sports wagering may lead to large fines or even prison.
Gambling activities that do not involve the outcome of contests (e.g. fantasy leagues, picking the MVP of the Final Four) are still constrained by the sports wagering prohibitions.
Providing Inside Information
Providing information about a player to individuals involved in organized gambling activities is considered participation in a gambling activity and is prohibited.
