Perceptions of Risk Behaviors and Perceptions of Community and Parental Approval and Disapproval

Sitka School District student survey administered January 17, 2007 to a random sample of students in grades 8, 10, and 12 from Blatchley Middle School, Sitka High School and Pacific High School.

introduction

ABOUT THE PERCEPTION SURVEY A required element of the Sitka School District’s Safe and Drug Free School grant is data collection and measurement of four core measures of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) prevention. For two of those measurements, the ones addressed by this project, the district to date had not yet systematically collected data. These measurements are of students’ perception: of the risk of ATOD use, and of  parental and community approval/disapproval of ATOD use. High school youth worked with the school administration and community providers to shed light on these perception questions. The Sitka high school statistics class developed a survey the method for gathering the sample of the student population for the survey. Joe Little, a math professor at UAS also reviewed the survey and made suggestions.  The survey was administered to a random sample of students in grades 8,  and 10, and 12 from Blatchley Middle School, Sitka High School and Pacific High School. The surveys were anonymous. This survey was a part of a larger project coordinated through Sitka Advancing Our Community: the Town Meeting Project. The intention was to launch a community dialogue regarding student’s perception of risk, and involve youth in making suggestions as to how the community could better support them in making healthy choices. A facilitated dialogue with a youth panel gave the community a chance to hear the results of the survey, and learn from teens themselves about how students decide what behaviors are risky, and how peers, parents, and the community affect their choices. The meeting will served as an opportunity for our community to get involved and make an even more effective difference in the lives of Sitka’s teens. The raw data from this survey can be downloaded from the Advancing Our Community website: (www.sitkaaoc.org). Navigate to the “Data” page, and look for the Student Perception Survey.

SUMMARY STATISTICS A total of 66 students were surveyed 32 were female, 34 were male 19 students were in grade 8 (Blatchley Middle School) 21 students were in grade 10 21 students were in grade 12 4 students did not identify a grade 11 students were from Pacific High School
