Hoops Looks to Bounce Back Versus Knights

Suffering their first setback of the season, the Lamar University Cardinals will look to bounce back Wednesday evening versus Southern University of New Orleans. The Cardinals jumped out to a quick start on the season winning their first three games which included victories over Tulsa and Coastal Carolina, but that streak came to an end Sunday afternoon against Cal State Bakersfield. The game against the Roadrunners was close throughout but CSUB hit its free throws down the stretch to pull away late. Big Red now turns its attention to the Southern University of New Orleans. The Knights head to Beaumont Wednesday with a 1-3 (.250) overall record, but coming off a thrilling 84-79 overtime victory over the University of Mobile. Wednesday’s game can be heard live on Newstalk 560, and seen live on ESPN3.

LU vs. the Knights

The Cardinals have never faced Southern University (New Orleans) in men’s basketball prior to the 2017-18 season.

Price vs. The Knights

In addition to it being the first time the Cardinals have every faced Southern University of New Orleans, it will also be the first time LU head coach Tic Price has ever coached against the school.

Home/Away Comparisons

The Cardinals were a near perfect 12-3 (.800) last season at home. Of the team’s three home losses, two were overtime setbacks to the top two teams in the conference. The Cardinals have jumped out to a strong start at home in 2017-18 winning their first two home contests, but dropped a 12-point decision to Cal State Bakersfield Sunday afternoon. Wednesday’s game will be just the second road contest for the Knights this season. SUNO enters the game with an 0-1 away record this season. History

Defending the Nest

The Cardinals have made the Montagne Center one of the toughest venues for opponents to play over the course of its 30-plus year history. The Cardinals have posted a 317-158 (.667) record in the Montagne Center. LU recorded a program-best 15 home victories during the 1987-88 season and was 12-3 (.800) at home last year. The Cardinals are 2-1 (.667) in the Montagne Center this season.

On This Date in History

The Cardinals are 5-3 (.625) all-time in games played on Nov. 22nd. The Red and White squared off against UTSA on the 22nd last season and posted a dominant, 78-58, decision over the Roadrunners.

Homestand

When the Cardinals step on the court Wednesday to face Southern University of New Orleans, they will be looking to lock up a winning record on the current season-long four-game homestand. LU is currently 2-1 (.667) during that stretch with victories over Coastal Carolina and Jarvis Christian. The lone setback came Sunday against Cal State Bakersfield.

20 something

Sophomore T.J. Atwood saw his first action of the season and took full advantage of the opportunity recording his first career double-double. The Beaumont, Texas native netted a career-high 21 points, grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists in the victory over Jarvis Christian. Atwood continued his strong play Sunday by coming off the bench to score nine points and pull down five rebounds in only 16 minutes of action.

He recorded his second double-double of the season, and 12th of his career Thursday with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Jarvis Christian. It was the first time LU had two players record double-doubles since the team’s victory at Central Arkansas last season. As a team, the Cardinals recorded 18 double-doubles last year and have four (from two different players) this season.

against Cal State Bakersfield. He is currently third all-time in school history with 170 career triples. He needs just 23 more three-pointers to become the school’s all-time leader in that category.

Overcoming A Disadvantage

Despite facing a squad that had a noticeable size advantage (Cal State Bakersfield had a roster that included two players that were 6-10 or taller), the Cardinals imposed their will in the low post. Big Red outscored the Roadrunners by 10 points in the paint, 36-26. It is the second consecutive game that LU has outscored its opponents in the paint.

Struggles From the Stripe

The Cardinals entered the game against Cal State Bakersfield as one of the league’s stronger free throw shooting teams (.723), but that strength failed them in the second half against the Roadrunners. After hitting 10-of-13 (.769) attempts in the opening 20 minutes of play, the Cardinals closed the game just 13-of-21 (.619).

Need Assistance

The Cardinals did a great job of sharing the basketball in Thursday’s victory. The Red and White finished the night with 25 assists, including seven each from Nick Garth, Torey Noel and T.J. Atwood.

Foster Home

LU fans got a glimpse of what freshman Jordan Foster is capable of doing on the court Thursday. The Lafayette, La., native scored eight points, on 4-of-5 (.800) shooting, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots in 18 minutes of action against the Bulldogs.

Fire Up the Cannon

Beaumont freshman Cannon Broussard saw his first playing time of the season against Jarvis Christian Thursday. The former Kelly Catholic standout played the final eight minutes of the game scoring eight points, on 2-of-4 (.500) shooting from beyond the arc, and recorded a steal against the Bulldogs.

Spreading the Wealth

The Cardinals had 10 players check into the lineup Thursday against Jarvis Christian. All 10 scored at least one basket, including four players in double figures, and three players who recorded the first points of their LU careers.

Southeast Texas Flair

The 2017-18 LU men’s basketball roster has a strong Southeast Texas flavor. Of the 12 players on the active roster, four are from the Golden Triangle. Those players include T.J. Atwood (Beaumont Central HS), Zjori Bosha (Hardin-Jefferson HS), Cannon Broussard (Kelly Catholic HS) and Colton Weisbrod (Nederland HS).

The Cardinal Rule

LU has been one of the Southland’s more dominant teams throughout league history. The Cards have won nearly 53 percent of their SLC games. The Cards also have the most NCAA tournament appearances of any current league school (6), and their five NIT berths are also tops in the league. LU has had 77 All-SLC players, including 30 first-team picks. Six players have been named SLC Newcomer of the Year, four MVP picks and a freshman of the year selection. Five former Cardinals have also been named SLC tournament MVP.

Lamar University Basketball Game Notes Tic Price

Head Coach 216-176 (.551)/13th Season 49-54 (.476)/Fourth Season at LU

Tic Price was named the head coach of the Lamar University men’s basketball team on March 18, 2014, just 10 days after the 2013-14 season concluded. Prior to that, he served as interim head coach for the team’s final five games. An NCAA Division I coach with 35 years experience, including three as an assistant at LU, Price became the 11th head coach of a Cardinals program that had won only seven games in the previous two seasons combined. Among his 35 seasons, Price has won more than 200 games and helped coach 12 different squads to the NCAA Championships, NIT or CollegeInsider.com tournament as either an assistant or head coach. Price was originally hired on an interim basis to get the program through the final five games of the 2013-14 season. Less than two weeks after the end of that season, Price was tasked with the responsibility of rebuilding a once great program. In just three short seasons, Price has transformed LU from a conference also-ran into a team that won 19 games and advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2012. Following the year, junior Colton Weisbrod was named first-team All-Southland Conference as well as to the NABC All-District squad. Weisbrod became the program’s first All-SLC first-team selection since Mike James in 2012. Big Red sent an early warning sign to the rest of the league that it was ready to begin the climb back up the conference ladder in 2016. In just the second game of the season, the Cardinals traveled to Corvallis, Ore., to take on 2016 NCAA tournament participant Oregon State. LU shocked the orange-clad fans who packed Gill Coliseum that night as the Cards walked away with a three-point victory. It was the program’s first victory over a Pacific 12 (Pac 10) school since the 1994-95 season. The victory over Oregon State was also the 950th win in program history. Price’s impact on the LU program was felt immediately. After just seven wins in two years, LU more than doubled its overall and Southland Conference win total from the previous two seasons by posting a 15-15 (.500) overall mark, and going 9-9 (.500) in league play in 2014-15. The .500 mark was recognized as the 11th-best single-season turnaround in the country. During his short time on campus to that point, the Cards had won 26 games - a 19-game improvement from the two seasons prior to Price’s arrival. Price’s players have also reaped the benefits of his guidance. Three players have been named to the All-Southland teams, including 2017 firstteam selection, Weisbrod, and 2015 SLC Newcomer of the Year Tyran de Lattibeaudiere. Price’s head coaching career began in 1994 at New Orleans, and includes stints at Memphis and McNeese. During his time at UNO, the Privateers won 20 games each season, and advanced to the 1996 NCAA Championships and the 1997 NIT. Price set the Sun Belt Conference career record for winning percentage in conference games, while his teams set new league records for three-pointers in consecutive seasons. UNO’s teams were also known for their strong defense, leading the SBC in field goal percent defense all three seasons. Following his time in New Orleans, Price was hired as the head coach at Memphis where he spent two seasons. Price posted a 30-27 (.526) record at Memphis, leading the team to the second round of the 1998 NIT. Price has a full understanding of the Southland, after spending six seasons, including five as head coach, at McNeese. He was named associate head coach prior to the 2000-01 season where he helped the Cowboys produce the nation’s largest turnaround going 22-9 (.710), winning

a conference title and advancing to the NIT. The following season, Price was named head coach where he led the Cowboys to a 20-win season, an SLC regular-season title and a berth in the 2002 NCAA Championships. The Cowboys won 74 games during Price’s five seasons in Lake Charles. During his time as head coach, Price has won 10 different coaching honors including Southland Conference Coach of the Year, Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Louisiana Sports Writers Association Collegiate Coach of the Year and NABC District 8 Coach of the Year. A native of Danville, Va., Price played collegiately at Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Virginia Tech in 1979. He is married to the former Jamie Lynn Simms, and the couple has two children - son, Ryan, who played for his father at McNeese and daughter, Chanel.
