CHALLENGING ROAD SERIES: The Saints will continue a series of games against nationally ranked teams when they take on 17th-ranked Cornell at Lynah Rink on Saturday night and 15th-ranked Colgate at Starr Rink in Hamilton on Saturday. The Saints are coming off a split of a home series with then 18th-ranked Michigan Tech (now 20th) and will be out to continue early ECAC success after a 4-2 start to the season in league play. The Central New York road games are th efirst of a series of three straight league games for the Saints, who will host arch-rival Clarkson at Appleton Arena on Tuesday. The Saints then play a non-league rematch with Clarkson at Lake Placid on Dec. 10 and are at Vermont on Dec. 17 before taking a break for the Christmas holiday. BIG WEEKEND FOR ESSERY, WENINGER: Sophomore center Kyle Essery figured in all three goals in Friday’s 3-2 win over Michigan Tech and sophomore goaltender Matt Weninger had two solid performances as the Saints split with the 18th-ranked Huskies. Essery scored twice, netting the eventual game winner midway through the second and rookie Chris Martin scored his fourth of the year in the Friday game. Weninger had 33 saves for the win, giving up a third period power play goal and an extra attacker gola with 14 seconds left. All the scoring came in the second period in Saturday’s rematch with defenseman Jordan Dewey netting his second of the year for the lone Saint goal. Weninger had 22 saves in the Saturday game. The Saints were one for six on the power play on Saturday while MTU went one for three. Tech was one for five and the Saints scoreless in three tries in Friday’s series opener, which was the first non-league win of the year for SLU. The Saints were without scoring leader Kyle Flanagan for the two games, who sat them out with an upper body injury. He is questionable for this weekend’s games as well. THE SAINT STAFF: The Saints will start the season under the guidance of coaches Mike Hurlbut and Greg Carvel as Saint head coach Joe Marsh starts 27th campaign as head coach on an indefinite medical leave to resolve a chronic arthritic condition which limits his mobility. Marsh has a career record of 468-399-72 going into the current season. Associate Head Coach Hurlbut and assistant coach Carvel inherit a young team which made the ECAC quarterfinals after a first round upset of Princeton on the road. The Saints took eventual champion Yale to three games before being eliminated in the playoffs. Last season’s team went 13-22-5. Hurlbut was a All America defenseman in 1989 who had a 14-year pro hockey career. He was elevated to the associate head coach position when Bob Prier left to become head coach at Princeton. Carvel, a 1993 graduate and former Saint captain has joined the staff as an assistant coach following a 15-year career in professional hockey, most recently as an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators. Mike Elberty ‘79, who has worked with the team the last few years in conditioning is now an assistant coach while Paul Schonfelder, who played professionally from 2002-07 is the Saints volunteer goaltending coach, while Brenda Crawford is the athletic trainer.

THE BREAKDOWN: The 2011-12 Saint roster includes seven seniors, six juniors, nine sophomores and six freshmen on its 28-man list. Two of the seniors are goaltenders: Robby Moss and Joe Spadaccini, four are fowards: captain Jacob Drewiske, Max Mobley, Rick Carden and Mark Armstrong, and one is a defenseman, Pete Child. The junior class includes forward and captain Kyle Flanagan, who has 63 points in two prior seasons and is the leader in career points on the roster, goaltender David Grilk and four defensemen: assistant captain George Hughes, Jordan Dewey, Matt Dyer and Mac Stratford, who played forward last year, but will return to the blue line as a junior. The sophomore class includes media pre-season all star Greg Carey plus Nic Vangog, Sean Logue, Jeremy Wick and Kyle Essery up front, blueliners Riley Austin, Justin Baker and Pat Raley and goaltender Matt Weninger. Newcomers include forwards Patrick Doherty, Tommy Thompson, Chris Martin, Gunnary Hughes, Justin Bruckel and defenseman Nelson Armstrong. THE SAINT CAPTAINS: Senior Jacob Drewiske will be joined by juniors Kyle Flanagan and George Hughes as the Saint captains for the upcoming season. Drewiske was an assistant captain last season while Flanagan, whose brother Sean was an assistant captain last season, is one of 10 players in program history to wear the “C” as a junior. Shawn Fensel and Erik Anderson were the most recent in 2008 and 2004. Flanagan is the first Saint to wear the “C” from Canton since current coach Greg Carvel in 1992-93. Chris Wells), current Saint women’s coach, was a captain in 1991-92 and Paul Flanagan, Syracuse women’s coach and Kyle’s uncle, was captain in 1979-80. Hughes is the games-played leader among the defensemen, entering his junior season with 81.

THE CORNELL SERIES: The Saints and Big Red will meet for the 102nd time on Friday and while the Saints are 4-0-2 in their last six at home after a 3-0 win in last year’s meeting in Canton, they will be looking for their first win in Ithaca since February of 2007. Cornell leads the all-time series 53-41-7, but the Saints have taken at least one point from Cornell each season since 2004-05 when the Big Red swept the season series. The Saints are 19-6-6 against Cornell in Canton, 5-0-0 on neutral ice and 17-47-1 in games in Ithaca. AGAINST THE RAIDERS: The Saints swept two games with Colgate last season and have now won the last eight in the series between the two teams. The Saints have won four straight at Starr Rink including a ECAC Quarterfinal series in 2010 and have not lost in Hamilton since a playoff game in March of 2008.. The Saints lead the all-time series 71-61-1. The Saints are 37-19-2 against Colgate in Canton. AMONG THE LEADERS: Greg Carey finished seventh with 40 points (23g, 17a) among all ECAC players last year and Kyle Flanagan was 11th with 35 (12-23). Carey was first in goals with 23 and Flanagan was 12th in assists with 23. Carey’s three game winning goals tied for seventh among all ECAC players last season and were the most by a rookie. George Hughes was seventh in defenseman scoring with four goals and 17 assists for 21 points while Justin Baker was tied for 23rd with two goals and 10 assists. Carey was first by five points in rookie scoring while Baker was 19th. Goaltender Matt Weninger was ninth in goals against average (2.65), and ninth in save percentage (.913).

NHL CONNECTIONS: Former Saint Rich Peverley (Boston Bruins) and goaltender Mike McKenna (New Jersey Devils) were the only Saints playing in the NHL last season with a number of players playing in the AHL, ECHL or other professional leagues. , A host of former players hold significant positions in the NHL. Former goaltender Jacques Martin is the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, while ex-defenseman Randy Sexton took over for Martin as general manager of the Florida Panthers after serving as assistant GM. Bill Torrey, who has a long history of management success in the NHL, was in charge of the search for Martin’s replacement as GM in Florida, is the Panthers’ Alternate Governor and is a member of the NHL Hall of Fame. Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero is a former Saint captain. Murray Cawker is Director of Hockey Operations for the Florida Panthers, Paul Castron is Director of Amateur Scouting for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Eric LaCroix is Director of Hockey Operations for the Colorado Avalanche, Mike Barnett is Director of US Scouting for the New York Rangers and is a former Pheonix Coyotes GM, Mark Leach is a scout for the Detroit Red Wings, and Mark Bonneau is a vice president with the Ottawa Senators. Former Saint player Jamie Baker, who had a 10-year NHL career, is the color commentator and SLU graduate Dan Rousanowsky is the play-by-play announcer for the San Jose Sharks. Peverley became the first Saint to have his name engraved on the Stlanley Cup as a playing member of the championship team when the Bruins won the cup in June. IN THE PROS (PART 2): While Rich Peverley, who will participate in Homecoming activities this weekend, is the lone Saint currently playing in the National Hockey League, a number of Saints are playing professionally in various North American minor leagues and several are in Europe. Drew Bagnall (Houston) Zach Miskovic (Hersey), Mike McKenna (Binghamton), Aaron Bogosian (Springfield) and Brandon Bollig (Rockford) are currently in the American Hockey League, while Mike Madill and Shawn Fensel are teammates on the Los Vegas Wranglers (ECHL). Other ECHL players include Mike McKenzie (Florida), Derek Keller (South Carolina), and Jeff Caister (Greenville). Sean Flanagan is playing in Quad Cities of the CHL while Mike Zbriger is with the Bloomington Blaze, and Alex Curran and Adam Hogg are with the Texas Brahmas. A number of former Saints are playing professionally in Europe. John Zeiler and TJ Trevelyan are teammates in Augsburg, Germany, while Alex Petizian and Kevin DeVergilio are palying for Pontebbe in Italy. Jared Ross is playing for the Lausitzer Foxes in Germany while Matt Generous is playing for Lukko Rauma in Finland. BROTHER ACTS: George and Gunnar Hughes continue a Saint tradition of brother acts on the same team as the Saints have now had a pair of brothers playing in the same season each year since 2004-05. Mark and Paul Wallman played for Saint teams from 2004-05 through 2006-07, Jared and Derek Keller played on teams from 2007-08 through 2009-10 and last year the Saints had Kyle and Sean Flanagan and Pat and Matt Raley on the team. PLAYER PROFILES 1 • Robby Moss • Sr. • Goaltender • 6-1 • 185 • Chesterfield, MO/North Iowa (NAHL) Robby Moss played in 14 games, starting 13 as a junior and compiled a 3.23 goals against average with a .902 save percentage. He went 5-6-2 and recorded his first career shutout with a 4-0 win at Colgate in February. He established a career high with 44 saves, six of them in overtime in the 5-5 tie at Mankato on the opening weekend his junior season.. He played in seven games, starting five, as a sophomore and finished the year with a 3-1-1 record and a 3.13 goals against average. He earned ECAC Goaltender of the Week honors with back-to-back wins over RIT and Niagara His first collegiate win came in his first college start, a 4-3 win at Massachusetts in 2008-09. He missed five weekends with injuries, a total of 11 games. Two of his goals and an assist came in the opening weekend of the season. He scored the game winner in a 6-0 win at Michigan Tech. He led all Saint defensemen in goal scoring with five. Pete had an outstanding sophomore season for the Saints, his first official collegiate season, and earned a regular spot in the Saint defensive lineup with his play at both ends of the ice. He played in 33 games, missing nine with injury, and scored six goals and had 11 assists for 17 points. The Saints went 2-4-3 in the nine games he missed. He scored his first collegiate point with an assist in game two against Army, part of a two assist night, and scored his first collegiate goal as part of a hat trick against Sacred Heart, becoming the first Saint defenseman to score a hat trick since the 1960s. He scored the game winning goal at Harvard and had assists on the game winners against Army and RIT. Three of his 11 career goals have come against Harvard. He had a goal and two assists in 17 games with his lone goal of the year coming in a 6-4 win over Vermont. He played in 34 games as a sophomore and scored three goals with seven assists. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 6-3 home win over Sacred Heart and scored his first career post-season goal in a 3-2 series clinching playoff win over Clarkson. He played in 15 games as a freshman, scoring three assists with his first career point coming against Clarkson. Rick scored his first point of the year with an assist against Dartmouth. Coming off a final junior season in which he scored 72 goals and had 44 assists for 114 points for the Burlington Cougars, Carey made a rapid and highly successful adaptation to college hockey.. He earned his first collegiate point with an assist in game one at Ferris. He scored his first collegiate goal in game two of the WMU series and went on to record a hat trick with all three goals coming in the second period. He earned his third ECAC Rookie of the Week award after his performance at Union and RPI as he figured in all four Saint goals. He earned the same awards after Michigan Tech, scoring two goals and assisting on four others..He had two goals against RPI and an assist against Union in the return match to earn Rookie of the Week honors for the fifth time. The first rookie to lead the Saints in scoring in the regular season since Paul Castron in 198182 he was named ECAC Rookie of the Week six times. He scored three game winning goal sand assisted on two others and finished the year seventh overall in points in the ECAC with 40, first in goals with 23 and third in power play goals with 11. He assisted on all three goals in the Ferris State series. He scored his first two goals of the season at Princeton. He had six goals and 11 assists in 40 games for the Saints as a junior, matching his sophomore season goal total. He scored both goals in a 2-2 tie with Quinnipiac and had a four-game scoring streak in mid-Feburary. He scored his first collegiate goal as part of a two-goal night in a 4-3 win at Clarkson as a sophomore and finished the year with six goals and three assists for nine points.He picked up his first point of the year on a shorthanded assist in the RIT game and scored his first goal of the year at Princeton. He had two assists in a 3-2 win at Princeton and two in the 4-3 overtime win at Yale in the quarterfinals. he assisted on Greg Carey’s OT game winner in game one of the Yale series. 15• George Hughes • Jr. • Defenseman • 6-1 • 180 • Westwood, MA/Waterloo (USHL) The son and nephew of former Harvard players George and Jack Hughes, and the brother of Saint rookie Gunnar Hughes, George Hughes will serve as an assistant captain as a junior and is one of the top returning blueliners in the ECAC. He is coming off a sophomore season in which he was a mainstay for the Saints. He played in all 40 games and had four goals and 17 assists for 21 points to lead all Saint blueliners. He was the Pete McGeough Award winner as the outstanding Saint defenseman. He was selected to the 2009-10 ECAC All Rookie Team after an outstanding first collegiate season and was the lone sophomore named to the Coaches 2010-11 ECAC pre-season All Star squad. George was the leading scorer among Saint blue liners with five goals and 18 assists in 41 games in his rookie season and was plus-five for the season. He scored 12 goals and had 23 assists, finishing 11th overall in points among all ECAC players a year ago and was 12th in assists. He is on pace to easily reach the 100 point club and could do it with a big season as a junior. He had eight multi-point games last season. He had five goals and 23 assists in his rookie season, finishing the year at plus-five, and scored two game winning goals...against Army in Omaha and against Niagara at home. He was named ECAC Rookie of the Week after the RIT-Niagara weekend He finished the year fourth in rookie scoring. He had scoring streaks of five and four games during the his sophomore season and was the leader inspecial teams points with 20, 17 on the power play and three shorthanded. He figured in all three Saint goals on opening weekend, scoring one and assisting on the other two and has scored in every game but the Union game.. He had two assists at Princeton and scored the only goal in the Quinnipiac game, his first game winner of the year. He leads all ECAC players in points per game at 1.62 per game on six goals, seven assists and 13 points in nine games.
