12/4/17 Happy December, everyone. Wow, those last three months flew by! The Booster Club hosted its second annual So, You Want To Play Sports In College forum last Tuesday. The student-athletes and parents in attendance got to hear directly from our college athlete/coach panel, what it m eans and what it takes to play collegiate sports. Renowned Coach and Avon resident Dee Stephan, a former collegiate player, collegiate coach, high school coach and AD, and club coach (Field Hockey and Lacrosse) was a treasure trove of information for us. There was not a question she couldn’t answer nor a situation she hadn’t experienced in her long, multifaceted career. Rounding out the panel, were former AHS soccer goalie Kaylan Conrad and former AHS rower, Jon Rosow, who shared their experiences being recruited for and competing on Division I sports teams (Bryant and Columbia University, respectively). A link to the slide presentation shown at the beginning of the program can be found on our website.. Winter sports begin this week. You can find the schedule below. We are all excited to enjoy some winter fun in the comfort of indoor courts and stadiums. Best of luck to this season’s athletes and coaches. GO FALCONS! Susan RD

*Yes, you read correctly! Avon now has a Girls Ice Hockey team, set up as a co-op, like the Boys Ice Hockey Team. The girls co-op includes East Granby, Southington and RHAM high schools, and games will be played at the Newington Arena. Woohoo! You can learn more about this exciting new addition to the Falcon family when we feature the team in issue.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Winter Preview with Mr.Filon
“It was a productive and competitive sports season” said Athletic Director Mr. Filon on the 2017 Fall season. Girls Cross-Country won the Class MM State Championships, Field Hockey made it to the Class M Quarterfinals, and the Crew teams posted big finishes in the Head of the Charles regatta and the New England Championship race.. Mr. Filon believes that “high school sports are about more than records” and that what matters most is how our students develop while playing sports. This year, the Boys soccer team experienced a big turnaround and advanced to the second round of the State Tournament, after beating several CCC opponents for the first time. Similarly, the Volleyball team had a winning season and made it through two rounds of state tournament play. Injuries on the Football team meant younger players had to step up to support their team, and a slow start in girls soccer yielded a strong finish. “All of our programs had their own successes, in different areas” said Mr. Filon. Having been a coach during the Winter season, Mr. Filon can say this season is the most fun. The games during the winter season are usually later in the day or on the weekends so there is often more student involvement and better fan attendance. Games are much closer together too, usually taking place at or around Avon High School. New this winter season is the Girls Ice Hockey team! The team is a co-op that includes East Granby, Southington and RHAM and will play at Newington Arena. Be sure to come out and support our scholar athletes during the Winter season!
