IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Indoor Track “This was almost definitely the strongest season that the Indoor Track team has had “ says Coach Cortney Fusco. The team has struggled to score points at the State Championships in the past, but this year the Girls team was 5th of 31 teams and the Boys team tied their best point total in school history. A stunning 12 school records were broken by this year’s team! “What separates the successful athletes from those who aren't is simple: the non-successful athletes are committed some days, but the successful athletes are committed every day” says Fusco. There are a number of these on the girls team this year. Of the six who qualified for the State Championships this year, four finished in the top three in their events. “One of the most notable aspects of the Girls team is the quality of the State-Qualifying athletes” Seniors Carly Carpino (who currently has the best Long Jump mark in the state of Connecticut since 2013), Hayley Dougela (who tied the School Record in the High Jump and finished 3rd at the State Championships), and Haley Gens (who finished 2nd in the 3200m run) led the team, with notable contributions from Sophomore Rhiannon Richmond (who was 2nd in the 1600m), Sara Leavens, and Ashley Martin. Between individual events and relay teams, the Boys team sent 12 athletes to the State Championships, where Jack Stokesbury (600m) and Anish Rajamanickam (300m) both set new school records, as did the 4x400m relay team of Zach Tilsch (who was 2nd in Long Jump at the CCC Championships and 5th at States), Venkata Patchigolla, Stokesbury, and Rajamanickam. Also competing well at the State Championships were Matt Nyklicek, Ian Albreksi, Alvin Guo, Tyler Hinrichs, Max Raha, Hari Patchigolla, and Justen Koo, all of whom either scored points for the team, ran a season's best time, or contributed to a relay team's season's-best time. Although the seniors defined the Indoor Track team this year, the future looks bright for the underclassman. A third of the athletes who competed in the championships were underclassman. “The coaches are dedicated” remarks Senior Sara Leavens; “they do a lot of research to figure out the best way to train us.” According to her coach, “so much of Track & Field training is preparation, there is not much coaching one can do while a race is actually occuring. So, what we stress in practice is very simple: show up, do the work, have confidence in your training.” Coach Fusco is generous in saying “most of the credit goes to the athletes. “They're the ones who put in the time and do what needs to be done. The fact that we've had such a successful season is due in large part to their dedication, work ethic, and effort.”
DID YOU KNOW? SCHOLARSHIP APPS ARE OPEN! The Booster Club awards a number of scholarships to qualifying AHS student-athletes every year. The club sponsors two different scholarship categories: Named Scholarships (which honor specific, fallen Falcons) and General Scholarships (which recognize athletes for their participation and performance in the school athletics program). Student-athletes may apply to both. Applications open today and are due April 15th. To review the applications or to apply, please click here and select the scholarship(s) you wish to explore in left-hand the drop-down menu under “Scholarships”. Good luck!
NEWS FROM THE ATHLETIC OFFICE ONLINE Spring Sports Registration is open. For those of you who didn’t register for a winter sport, the process has changed as we are using a new ONLINE REGISTRATION program called FamilyID (which was a big hit with the winter with families and coaches). Through Family ID, you now have the ease of paying online or by check. All of your athlete’s registration info is stored electronically for easy updating, re-use, and retrieval by the coaches - saving us over 4000 pieces of paper a season! If your athlete registers but does not make a team, or switches teams, the change can be easily made online - or, with a simple click, the athletic office can refund your payment. In other news, we are amending our Fee waiver policy, and you can find this information on our website. If you believe you will need an fee waiver, please begin the process for approval as soon as possible so it can be processed and your athlete will have no risk missing tryouts or practice time.
All this information can be viewed on our website. Go Falcons!
