–

™  School Youth Athletic Activity –  Means a school or local education agency where organized athletic activity with participants under the age of 18 are engaging in organized athletic games, competition against another team, club, or entity. Does not include college or university activities. –  Department of Health is the governing authority. –  Requires that all coaches whether employed, or volunteer must complete an annual concussion recognition course. –  Coaches and volunteers must have current training in recognizing signs and symptoms of potentially catastrophic head injuries, concussions, and second impact syndrome.

School Youth Activity

–  Coaches and volunteers will also understand the necessity of obtaining proper medical attention for persons suspected of having sustained a concussive injury. –  Coaches and volunteers will know the nature and risk of concussions. Including the dangers of continuing to play after sustaining a concussion. –  Coaches and volunteers will know the proper method and statutory requirements in order to satisfy a safe return to play. –  Further requires that on a yearly basis; a concussion and head injury information sheet be signed and returned by each coach, and athletic director, and if appointed a licensed health care professional. –  These forms must be turned into the league administrator/LEA for both public and non-public schools. –  These forms must also be completed on a yearly basis by the parent/ guardian. PRIOR to the start of any activity. –  Forms will be retained for a period of 3 years.

School Youth Activity

– –  Establish a policy for the immediate removal of any athlete who shows signs and symptoms consistent with a concussion. –  Establish a policy that any athlete who has been removed from play shall not return to practice or competition until they have been evaluated by a health care provider. (MD, DO, or Clinical Neuropsychologist with Concussion Training). –  After the athlete has been evaluated and received written clearance for a graduated return to play, then the school may allow a licensed health care professional with specific knowledge of the athletes condition, to manage their graduated return to play. –  The licensed health care professional must provide updates to the supervising health care provider as to the athletes condition. –  All Licensed health care professionals shall have training in the evaluation and management of concussions. –  At a minimum the licensed health care professional shall complete the CDC concussion training. –  Materials will be readily available from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC).

Community Based – Youth Athletic Activity

– ™  This applies to any city, county, business or nonprofit organization that organizes a community-based youth athletic activity for which a fee is charged. ™  Department of health governs. ™  Must adopt guidelines and other pertinent information and forms (Developed by the DOH). ™  All other guidelines are identical to the School Youth Activity Guidelines. ™  Detailed information can be found on Public Chapter # 148 within the State of Tennessee Archives.
