De’ANGELO HENDERSON • RB • R-Sophomore Coastal Carolina • Summerville, S.C.

LIBERTY DEFENSIVE LINE

Henderson rushed 19 times for a career-high 131 yards and a score in Coastal Carolina’s 31-30 win at North Carolina A&T. He also caught four passes for 28 yards to finish the day with 159 all-purpose yards. On Coastal’s final drive -- with CCU clinging to a 31-30 lead with 4:08 left in the game and on its own 14 -Henderson had runs of 10 and 11 yards on the first two plays, then added a six-yard run with 41 seconds left to gain a first down and seal the victory. Including the three first downs on the final drive, 10 of Henderson’s 19 rushes went for either a first down or a touchdown.

Liberty’s defensive front recorded 26 tackles (9 solo, 17 assosted) and all six of the Flames’ sacks for a total loss of 41 yards in the team’s 17-0 shutout win at Norfolk State. The line finished with eight of Liberty’s 11 TFLs (minus-54 yards), five of which were behind the line on third down -- including NSU’s first three drives of the second half. Defensive end TOBY ONYECHI finished with a career-high six tackles, 2.5 TFLs and 2.5 sacks, while defensive tackle DOMINIQUE DAVIS finished with a career-high 3.0 TFLs. Right end CHIMA UZOWIHE tied a career high with six tackles and recorded a career-best 2.5 sacks.

DEVIN BROWN • KR • R-Sophomore Coastal Carolina • Charleston, S.C.

TYRELL MAXWELL • QB • Freshman Gardner-Webb • Cordova, S.C.

Brown returned three kickoffs for 141 yards (47.0 average) with a crucial 99-yard return for a touchdown in Coastal’s 31-30 win at North Carolina A&T. After the Aggies scored to go ahead 30-24 with 7:16 left in the game, Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a score to tie the game at 30-30. It was the longest touchdown play in Coastal Carolina history and tied for the second-longest kickoff return in Big South annals.

Maxwell came off the bench to ignite the GardnerWebb offense late in Saturday’s loss at Wake Forest, leading two drives inside the red zone and breaking up the shutout on a 5-yard touchdown scamper on a quarterback draw in the final minute. Maxwell scrambled out of trouble several times and darted 21 yards on third down midway through the quarter to move the chains. His ability to move outside the pocket also drew two roughing the passer fouls that kept drives alive for GWU. Maxwell finished as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ leading rusher with 62 yards on 12 attempts (5.2 yards per carry).

LOOK WHO’S 2-0!! Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina are 2-0, the third-straight season and the sixth time overall in League history that two Big South teams have opened the season undefeated after two games. Monmouth (1-0) could join the duo with a win Saturday over Wagner, which would mark the first time since 2006 that three Big South teams opened 2-0 in the same season. The Chanticleers are 2-0 for the fourth consecutive season and are looking to start 3-0 for the second-straight year. The Buccaneers are 2-0 for the second year-in-a-row as well. Monmouth has not been 2-0 since opening the 2006 campaign 4-0. PROTECT THIS HOUSE The Big South is undefeated at home thus far at 4-0. Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb and Liberty open their home slates on Saturday, and below is a look at the three teams’ last home-opening win and current home opening streaks. Presbyterian has the longest-active win streak in home openers at four. Team Coastal Carolina Gardner-Webb Liberty

COASTAL’S HOME WIN STREAK ON THE LINE THIS WEEK Coastal Carolina has the League’s longest active home win streak at nine, which is the fifth-longest home win streak in Big South history. It is the Chanticleers’ longest home win streak since winning 12 consecutive home games from Sept. 11, 2004 - Nov. 12, 2005. LaQUA MAYES HAYES Presbyterian RB LaQUA MAYES broke through for a 92-yard touchdown run this past Saturday against Bluefield, establishing the record for longest rush from scrimmage in Big South football history. The previous record was 86 yards set by former Coastal Carolina FB and current Carolina Panther MIKE TOLBERT against VMI on Oct. 27, 2007. WOODWORKING Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM has rushed for a touchdown and passed for a score in the same game five times in his career, and the Flames are 3-2 in such contests -- winning the last three. Woodrum has seven career rushing touchdowns, and needs three more to become the 11th Big South QB with 10. Meanwhile, Woodrum is 56 passing yards shy of 5,000 in his career and needs 247 to move into 10th-place on the Big South’s all-time list. BIG BLUE Presbyterian College amassed 678 yards of offense this past Saturday against Bluefield, the fifth-highest single-game total in League history. The Blue Hose finished with 523 rushing yards against the Rams -- the second-most single-game total in the Conference record books. PC averaged 9.69 yards per play and 8.44 yards per rush in the victory.

POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 99, while the second-longest active streak belongs to Coastal Carolina (33). Meanwhile, Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 43, the second-longest streak in Big South history. That record is 45 games, established by the Flames from Sept. 23, 2006 – Sept. 18, 2010. HIGH RATE OF RETURN Coastal is 17-1 in its last 18 games when rushing for more than 200 yards, including 1-0 this season. The Chanticleers have rushed for more than 200 yards 62 times in their history, and are 57-5 ( =91.9) when reaching 200 rushing yards. Carolina has rushed for 200-plus yards in 19 of Head Coach JOE MOGLIA’s 30 games as CCU’s head coach, posting an 18-1 record in such games. BIG SOUTH’S STREAK WITH NATIONALLY-RANKED PROGRAM CONTINUES With Coastal Carolina ranked No. 5 in this week’s FCS Coaches poll and No. 5 in The Sports Network ranking, the Big South has had a football squad ranked for 39 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 campaign (Oct. 24). The Conference has had a Top 5 team in six of the last 11 rankings. MAN CAVE Charleston Southern is the first program in Big South history to open the season with four consecutive home games. The last time the Buccaneers played four-straight home games was in 2006, which were all wins as part of CSU’s 9-0 start to the season that year. The last Big South football member to play four home games in a row was Stony Brook in 2011.

RETURN TO SENDER Coastal Carolina’s DEVIN BROWN returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown this past Saturday at North Carolina A&T, tied for the second-longest kickoff return in League history. It was Brown’s second career kickoff return TD, and he is now one of seven players in the Big South record books with multiple kickoff return touchdowns. The record for most career kickoff return TDs is three, held by Liberty’s DOMINIC BOLDEN (2005-08), Charleston Southern’s GERALD STEVENSON (2007-10) and Liberty’s KEVIN FOGG (2009-13). INSIDE THE TACKLE BOX Coastal Carolina senior LB QUINN BACKUS is the active leading tackler in FCS with 337 career stops, which ranks sixth in League history. He is 63 away from becoming just the second player in Big South annals with 400. Meanwhile, Presbyterian College’s DONELLE WILLIAMS is 28th with 225. On the cusp of joining the Big South’s 200-tackle club are Liberty’s NICK SIGMON (187) and Charleston Southern’s DEMARIS FREEMAN (185). CHIMA CHEWS IT UP Liberty junior DL CHIMA UZOWIHE leads the Big South with 2.5 quarterback sacks and has 11.5 for his career -- 13th all-time in League history. Uzowihe is 1.5 sacks away from entering the Big South’s Top 10 sack leaders. SOLO ARTIST Coastal Carolina senior LB QUINN BACKUS is third all-time in Big South history with 186 career solo tackles, and needs 10 to move past Charleston Southern’s JADA ROSS for second-place. Ross had 195 solo hits from 2004-07. Backus needs 14 solo stops to break the Big South career record of 199 that is held by former Presbyterian DB and current Arizona Cardinal JUSTIN BETHEL (2008-11). ELIMINATING THE MIDDLE MAN Charleston Southern LB GABE MIDDLEBROOK returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ Week 1 win over Point. It is the fourth-longest fumble return in Big South history, and the longest in the League since Presbyterian’s BRANDON LESTON had a 91-yard fumble return against Georgia Tech in 2012. Middlebrook’s fumble return is the longest by a CSU player during the Big South’s football era (since 2002). The previous longest was a 77-yard fumble return for a TD by JADA ROSS against Gardner-Webb in 2007. CALL HIM MR. FUMBLEROOSKIE Liberty’s JACOB HAGEN returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown at North Carolina in Week 1 -- his second career fumble return TD. He is now the first player in Big South history to return two fumbles for scores. Hagen’s first career fumble return TD was a 44-yard return vs. Stony Brook in 2012. CAKE ROSS Coastal Carolina QB ALEX ROSS recorded his second-straight game with 300 yards of offense this past Saturday as he amassed 322 at North Carolina A&T. He is the first Chanticleer signal-caller with back-to-back 300 offensive yard games since ARAMIS HILLARY in 2012 (309 vs. North Carolina A&T on Sept. 1 and 303 at Furman on Sept. 8). Ross is now tied for fourth all-time in Big South history for most games with 300 total offensive yards at seven. Meanwhile, Ross is ninth in League annals for most rushing yards by a quarerback with 783. He is 21 away from moving past former Charleston Southern QB COLLIN DRAFTS (803) for eighth-place. Ross is 217 rushing yards away from becoming the seventh Big South quarterback with 1,000 career rushing yards. BEATTY OR NOT, HERE HE COMES Gardner-Webb QB LUCAS BEATTY needs 219 passing yards to become the eighth player in Big South history with 6,000 in a career. He currently ranks eighth all-time with 5,781. Beatty also ranks in the Conference’s career Top 10 with 524 completions (4th) and 859 pass attempts (5th). He is on pace to become the second Big South quarterback with 600 career completions. Meanwhile, Beatty is among the League’s all-time leaders in total offense for plays (8th - 1,012) and yardage (9th - 5,489). HE’S GOT THE WILL Presbyterian College redshirt-junior LB DONELLE WILLIAMS recorded his 10th career 10-tackle game in Week 1 with 12 stops at Northern Illinois. Williams, who has played 27 career games, has averaged 8.33 tackles per game in his career, which is 10th in Big South history. Coastal Carolina LB QUINN BACKUS owns a per game average of 8.43 (337 in 40) -- the ninth-highest average in the record books. BIG SIG Liberty redshirt-senior LB NICK SIGMON needs one tackle-for-loss to become the 11th player in Big South history with 30 career TFL. Sigmon would be the second Liberty player on the list, as STEVEN ACKLEY recorded 30 stops behind the line of scrimmage from 2004-07.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!! Charleston Southern and Presbyterian College both added lights to their football stadiums during the offseason. CSU won its first-ever home night game in Week 1 and is 2-0 in its home night games thus far. PC was victorious in its first night game at Bailey Memorial Stadium this past Saturday vs. Bluefield. The Blue Hose played under the lights at home for the first time since Oct. 27, 1990 against Wingate at Old Bailey Stadium. PC lost that game, 33-22. TDs FOR KB Monmouth redshirt-senior RB KWABENA (KB) ASANTE became the first player in Big South football history to score four touchdowns in a season opener when he reached the end zone four times against Delaware State in Week 1. Asante is the 12th different player in League annals to score four touchdowns in a game, and the first to do so in the month of August. BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL RETURNS TO ESPN3 IN 2014 The Big South Conference will televise eight football games exclusively on ESPN3 this season. The “Game of the Week” package includes a non-Conference broadcast for the second time and begins Oct. 4 when Gardner-Webb hosts Charlotte. The first League game on E3 will be Oct. 11 with the Coastal Carolina at Presbyterian College contest. BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL TO AIR ON AMERICAN SPORTS NETWORK Big South football will appear on the new American Sports Network (ASN) in 2014, as six contests -- five of them between Conference members, will be broadcast on affiliates and stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. The first telecast is the Sept. 27 Elon at Coastal Carolina game live at 7:00pm. The six broadcasts push the League’s overall package to a Big South-record 14 this season (12 League games). In addition, the final five weeks of the 2014 regular-season will now feature two televised games each week. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS ONE Coastal Carolina and Liberty will meet in the season-finale for the first time, as their Nov. 22 match-up in Conway will mark their 12th meeting. Coastal leads the series, 6-5, and the winner of the matchup has won or shared the Big South football Championship nine times. The Chanticleers won threestraight over Liberty from 2004-06 en route to three consecutive titles (two outright, one shared). The Flames were victorious from 2007-09 while winning three-straight Big South crowns (two outright, one shared). Coastal won last season’s meeting and both teams shared the title in 2013, as well as 2010 and 2012. GOOD WORK YOUNG MEN For the first time in Big South history, two football players have been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as Charleston Southern’s CHRISTIAN REYES and Liberty’s JONATHAN BURGESS are among the 182 candidates from every subdivision and classification. The Big South has had one honoree named to the team -- Charleston Southern’s JORDAN LANCASTER in 2010. WELCOME MAT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY is in its first year as an associate member in 2014. Next season, start-up program KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY begins play and associate membership in the Big South, returning the League to seven football members. KENNESAW STATE UPDATE As Kennesaw State continues to build its program during the 2014 season, the Big South will include details of the Owls’ progress throughout the season leading up to their 2015 kickoff. On August 28, KSU’s football uniforms and the team’s inaugural 2015 season logo were unveiled. The Owls will hold their first official practice with helmets on Monday, Sept. 8. ROSS, COOK ON INITIAL WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST For the second time in Big South history, two players open the season as official candidates for the Walter Payton Award, as Coastal Carolina QB ALEX ROSS and Gardner-Webb WR KENNY COOK are among the initial 20 candidates for the top individual award in FCS. In 2011, Liberty QB MIKE BROWN and Flames’ WR CHRIS SUMMERS opened the campaign among the initial candidates. RECORD THREE PLAYERS ON BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCH LIST A record three Big South players are among the initial 20 candidates for the Buck Buchanan Award, which honors the top defensive player in FCS. Coastal Carolina LB QUINN BACKUS, who finished seventh in the voting last year, headlines the Big South’s trio. Joining him are Gardner-Webb DL O.J. MAU and Liberty DB JACOB HAGEN. The Big South is tied with the Big Sky Conference for the most Buchanan Award candidates.
