Pledge of Allegiance Prayer I. Roll Call II. Executive Session- A. 551.074- Personnel- (went in 7:01 p.m. and came out 7:30 p.m.) III. Items for Board Action: A. No action was taken from the Executive Session IV. Communication from the Public: A. Mr. Donald Britt spoke on his concern of possible mold at SFA. B. Ms. Kristie Ledbetter asked if Richter would also be tested for mold and her concerns of safety issues at Richter. C. Ms. Judith Norman discussed her concern of AP History textbook and the process of textbook adoption. V. Celebrations: (This agenda item is highlighting some of the “happenings” around the district given by Ms. Stacey Gatlin.)       

The District-Wide Open House that was held on August 21. It was a huge success with many positive comments from parents, students, and staff. ALS Challenges going on in our district including Dr. Johnson’s water-drenching challenge on August 22 and the DHS’ administrators challenge during last Friday’s pep rally with Mr. Travis Young challenging all of the other principals. Great classroom instruction that showed off what our teachers are all working on: (1) student-centered learning, (2) the reading initiative and (3) Write to Learn. Ways DISD is honoring our students’ Grandparents and various activities throughout the district. Kimmie M. Brown’s new student greeters program to help promote leadership skill and customer service opportunities for our KMB students. KMB’s teacher Ms. Paula Wyatt’s new technology donated by anonymous donor. 7 Dayton ISD Students participated in Education in Action’s Summer and Spring Break Lone Star Leadership Academies: o John Bartee (DHS) – Youth Facilitator o Raegan Jackson (DHS) – Youth Facilitator o Alexis Bardley (Nott) – Dallas/Fort Worth o Amanda Carden (Nott) – Houston/Galveston o Gabby Zumpano (Nott) – Austin/San Antonio o Anna Brothers (WWJH) – Houston/Galveston o Victoria Keck (WWJH) – Austin/San Antonio The Rememberance of 9/11 at the various campuses along with a great picture of our new ROTC. Hats off to our ROTC at the football game this past week was done by Mr. Jim Smesny and echoed by all Board Members. DHS 2014 AP Scholar Achievements were honored: o AP Scholar– David Marshall o AP Scholar – Haley Shaw o AP Scholar – Bradley Watson o AP Scholar with Distinction – Scott Chachere Congratulations to Mr. Travis Young who has been selected by TASSAP to be the Chair of the Students Activities Committee We are very excited about the new position of Ms. Ana Beltrami. She has started rolling out our new Parent Liaison meetings with first her LPAC training and then also hosting a meeting with Dr. Johnson who went over the Bond presentation with the parents while Ms. Cumbie did activities with the children. Over 50+ parents attended the meeting. Congratulations to our Transportation Dept. as they were awarded the Clean Air Award last Thursday in Houston at the Houston/Galveston Council banquet. Mr. Abel Narvaez and Mayor Felix Skarpa (Mayor of Dayton) were on hand to accept the award.

 

Celebrations were concluded with some pictures of Dr. Johnson giving Bond Presentations to help educate folks over the upcoming Bond. The Board thanked the DHS for their yearbooks.

Approved the Consent Agenda (previous Board Minutes, Disbursements, and Budget Amendments). Approved the TASB Policy Update 100. Approved Workers Compensation Insurance for 2014-2015 Approved the Inter Local Agreement with Liberty County Precinct 4 to share equipment and labor for projects benefiting either or both entities. Approved the Inter Local Agreement with Liberty County Clerk’s Office and the City of Dayton for the November 4, 2014. This would include early voting starting on Oct. 20 with several early voting opportunities at various campuses. Approved the Textbook Committee for the Proclamation 2015 Selection which includes Math 9-12, SS K-12 and Fine Arts. Approved the purchase over $10,000- DHS Ag. Truck. This is in the budget and the existing 13 year old truck (with 187,191 miles) will be repurposed for a maintenance truck. Approved Texas Education Agency request for Maximum Class Size Exception. As of 9/10/2014, DISD has 12 kindergarten classrooms over the 22:1 ratio, 2 classrooms at 2nd grade over the ratio, 6 classrooms at 3rd grade over and 3 classrooms in the 4th grade. (5th grade information was shared as “FYI” with 4 classrooms with 23:1 and 1 classroom with 24:1 ratio) Approved the hiring of one kindergarten teacher, one instructional aide at SFA and one Bilingual instructional aide for KMB. Approved the Adjunct Faculty Agreement to allow Alexis Cordova and Cory Long to be adjunct faculty member and resolution with the Liberty County Texas 4-H organization as eligible for extracurricular status under 19 Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 76.1.

VII. Board Information: A. Superintendent Johnson’s Report 1. Summer School Update- Bridgette Bean and Sherri Long gave the final report over our Summer Programs including: Jump Start- Both the reading and math students showed improvement and there were a total of 256 students Grades K-8 targeted Possible retention Bilingual Program- 21 students participated in this program and saw good growth in their reading PK-K targeted 8 hours a day/5 days a week Giddy Up Reading Rodeo-74 students (up from 34 last year) with good levels of growth also observed K-2 targeted Reading Interventions- utilized the Balanced Literacy approach focusing on guided reading 2. Bond Update- Dr. Johnson gave an update on the Bond process. In the report, it was noted that the enrollment as for the district is 5177 and that there are 720 employees. In the fourteen presentations that Dr. Johnson has done so far, many folks were unaware that DISD encompassed 248 square miles and are both in Liberty and Harris Counties. Demographic changes from last year were noted that Hispanic population increased from 34% to 37%, a slight increase in African Americans to 8.2% and Caucasian was down from 54% to 52%. The district Bond website has been rolled out along with “did you know” FB tidbits. Each campus was delivered a bond informational poster for their front office along with administration building. The last update was the actual dates of the early election. 3. Articulated Bilingual Plan- Ms. Abbie Cumbie gave the report and started out giving the names on the Committee that worked on this plan. She started out by giving the history of how the process was implemented. They took several field trips to see how the other districts’ plans looked. Mr. Painter assisted the group into creating a vision and mission for the group. They set district literacy expectations, identified grade specific balanced literacy components and timelines. Ms.Cumbie also addressed Exit Criteria and answered questions by the Board. B. Assistant Superintendent Pierce’s Report 1. Financial/Budget Statement 2. Check Register from Activity Funds 3. Tax Collector’s Report Ms. Abbie C. Assistant Superintendent Pierce’s Report 1. CTE Early College High School Planning- This is in the exploration stage of a potential opportunity to partner

with Lee College and five other surrounding school districts to form a CTE Early College High School. Mr. Painter explained the need for more opportunities for our students to start working on a certification that would help get them a great job in various industries. DISD will be hosting the next planning meeting (he had attended two previous meetings) to start looking at logistics for each school district. Executive Session: The Board went into Executive Session at 8:46 p.m. to discuss the following items: 551.074 - Personnel 551.074 – Personnel – consider substitute teacher list 551.072 – Property Items for Board Action after Executive Session @ 9:45 p.m.: A. Board accepted the resignation of Ms Priddy B. Board approved all Personnel recommendation as presented. C. Board approved the Substitute list as presented. D.
