February 2017

Dear Parents Y10 Geography Trip to Juniper Hall, Monday 03 April 2017 The GCSE Geography syllabus requires all students to participate in a number of days of outdoor active fieldwork. Fieldwork needs to cover both human and physical geography and students are expected to learn a number of techniques for collecting and analysing primary data. These skills will be in paper 3 of the GCSE exam which is worth 25% of the final GCSE grade. It is therefore essential that all students attend all fieldwork. We have organised physical geography fieldtrips on 03 and 05 April 2017 to Juniper Hall Field Studies Centre in Surrey which is run by the Field Studies Council. Students will be learning and carrying out fieldwork based on our current topic of rivers. The fieldwork will be led by the staff at Juniper Hall under the supervision of Oathall’s Geography department. The staff at Juniper Hall have expertise in this fieldwork and provide all of the necessary equipment. Further information about the centre can be found on their website: www.field-studies-council.org/centres/londonregion/juniperhall. The data collected and skills learned will be written up by students in the lessons following the fieldtrip. This work will then be used to prepare the students for the paper 3 exam in May 2018. Another fieldtrip to cover human geography topics will be organised for the end of year 10 or beginning of year 11 with further details to follow. Mr Moore’s geography class will be attending on Monday 03 April and Mrs Lindsley’s class on Wednesday 05 April. Mrs Garrick’s calls will be split over both days so it is essential that students are aware of which day they are attending. We will be leaving Oathall at 07:45 and returning back at approximately 18:00/18:30 depending on traffic. Much of the day will be outside so students should come prepared for all weather conditions. It is essential that old clothes are worn with suitable footwear e.g. a pair of trainers, walking boots or wellies, warm clothes and waterproofs, a packed lunch, pen, pencil and clipboard. You are invited to make a voluntary contribution of £40.00 via ParentPay which covers the cost of transportation and insurance and the entrance ticket. If you are not able to contribute, your child will still be included on the activity. Although the contribution is voluntary, I do need to point out that it is probable that the visit could not take place unless all parents, who are able, are willing to contribute.

I appreciate that some families might find it particularly difficult to contribute all or part of the suggested sum and if you feel that you are in such a position, please do not hesitate to contact

me in confidence to discuss whether some suitable arrangements can be made to cover the cost of your child’s participation. Oathall has the expectation that all students will behave according to our Code of Conduct. A student may be withdrawn from attending if their behaviour before the activity is unacceptable. Please complete the reply slip and return no later than Friday 10 March 2017. Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me at the college. If your child is unfit to travel on the day, please call or text 07582 150545 prior to departure. Yours sincerely Mrs K Garrick Humanities Faculty Enrichment Leader "-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To: Sharon Hunter, Reception No LATHER THAN FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017 Y10 Geography Trip to Juniper Hall, Surrey – Monday 03 April 2017 Student Name: …………………………………………… Tutor Group: ……………………...
