HEALTHY CHARACTER: LISTENING AND DOING BIG IDEA | Don’t just listen to God’s Word, do it what it says. COME TOGETHER | a place to start and get the conversation going with your small group •What is the purpose of looking into a mirror? •How would you define the word hypocrite? •Have you felt like a hypocrite recently? Why or why not? STUDY TOGETHER | Start digging and read Scripture about Healthy Character. 2 Samuel 11:1-5, 14-16 2 Samuel 12:1-13 James 1:19-27 DISCUSS TOGETHER | Discuss the Bible and principles from Scripture. From 2 Samuel 11 & 12 •The context of 2 Samuel shows a godly man, King David, doing some very ungodly things. God uses David’s friend, Nathan, to hold a mirror in front of him to help correct him. •What story does Nathan share with David? •Why do you think Nathan tells David a story rather than confronting him directly about his sin? •Why is it so difficult for people to be objective about their own sin? Who or what helps us see our sin? •How does David’s attitude change during this passage? From James 1:19-27 •What does James tell us to do? What does he say not to do? •What are the benefits of being slow to speak and slow to anger? How are these two things often related to each other? •How would you define the word righteousness? (see Romans 3:25-26, 5:17) Where does our righteousness come from? •How does the Bible have the ability to free us from the filth? •How does Scripture function as a mirror? •James tells us that God's Word was planted in us. What weeds can choke that Word and keep it from growing? •Why is it easy to fall into the trap of knowing what the Bible says, but not putting it into practice?

HEALTHY CHARACTER: LISTENING AND DOING

STUDYGUIDE

GROW TOGETHER | Consider how to best apply biblical principles to your life today. Have you ever had a “Nathan” who helped remind you of God’s Word and standards for your life? If so, was that relationship helpful to you, why or why not? How and when do you engage God through Scripture? What or who helps you stay consistent in reading God’s Word? What steps could you take to become better at listening? Which of your relationships, in particular, would benefit from you becoming a better listener? What are those areas of filth and evil that creep into your life? Why? What parts of God’s Word have you heard, but find yourself ignoring? James alludes to the idea that application is everything when it comes to God’s Word. How can you take a step to improve in this area? What can your group do to better apply God’s Word and foster biblical community (i.e. serving together, praying for each other more regularly during the week, etc.)? PRAY TOGETHER | a prayer guide to add to whatever prayer items are appropriate for you and your group None of us are perfect. We all have plenty to work on. Identify one area of your life that you need to apply God’s Word to. Look in the mirror. Pray for each other to take a step of growth in that area this week.
