Billy Trott, Raleigh – CHAIR Anna Martin, Wilmington Jeff Joyce, Asheville Francie Barragan, Fayetteville Alex Rucker, Winston-Salem WWW.NCTENNIS.COM

I hope that you were able to make it to Asheville for the Fed Cup tie in February. What an amazing event it was! The collaboration and hard work of local, state, sectional, national, and international tennis communities paid off when we all cheered the USA to victory against a tough Netherlands team. Tennis is like that, it unites us. It brings folks together, old and young, new players to professionals, all of us supporting a sport we love. Tennis makes friends of strangers, encourages inclusiveness, and promotes outreach. It does all this with a racket and little yellow ball. Uniting people through tennis compels us to be inclusive. To that end, we will review our policies and procedures over the coming months to ensure we are doing all we can to make certain our staff, vendors, and volunteers mirror the identities of our players across the state. By now, you’ve probably seen the Net Generation commercials circulating on TV and social media. Net Generation is the new USTA brand for kids five to 18 years old, dedicated to welcoming millions of new junior players to tennis by focusing on empowerment, unity, and play. provides a single registration platform for programs across the country. It also requires all program providers to complete a background screening and an education program before they are cleared to work with minors. If you have not done so already, I enthusiastically encourage all providers - certified coaches, school teachers, parent volunteers or community coordinators – to visit this website and begin the sign-up process. There is no cost to do so, and there are incentives and curricula to help you become the face of the Net Generation! It is our heartfelt hope that, starting sometime this summer, parents will find a one-stop shop to locate safe, low-cost, local programs for their children. Last year, USTA North Carolina started a new initiative to welcome more people to tennis, funding a low-cost program called Try Tennis. Now, this program is offered by local community tennis associations (CTA) and other organizations in cities across the state. It assists new and returning players to go “from couch to court” in just six sessions. Since it was first introduced in late 2016, the program has helped more than 2,500 adults and juniors in 47 cities. For 2018, over 45 sessions in 31 cities have already been scheduled. Look for a Try Tennis program near you, and encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to pick up a racket. If you have questions, or want information about conducting a Try Tennis session, email Kevin Sierra at [email protected] Did you know the North Carolina Tennis Foundation supports tennis and educational programs to help empower junior players across our state? Scholarships and grants are available to help young players afford lessons, camps, and college. Check out what’s available at If you want to demonstrate your love for the game, join me in donating $10 (or more!) to our “10 for Tennis” campaign. If you have questions or want to get more involved with our foundation, email Andrew Waldrop at [email protected] We want to know about the good things going on in your tennis community, but it is hard for us to learn about every single amazing person and program out there. Please help us recognize the unsung heroes of tennis by nominating them for a North Carolina Tennis Award. These awards are given annually at the Community Development Workshop in October and Tennis Weekend in January, but you can nominate a worthy recipient at any time. For more information on award categories, or to nominate a candidate, go to our website, Thanks for all that you do to champion tennis in our great state. I am grateful for your support and am excited to serve as your President for the next two years. I look forward to working with you, and helping North Carolina become more united in tennis.

2018 Hall of Fame Class Paula Hale, J.W. Quick, and George (Doc) Simkins, Jr. inducted into the NC Tennis Hall of Fame! Paula Hale came to tennis as an adult. Since then she has spent more than 30 years volunteering at the community tennis association, the state, sectional and national levels. At every stop, she has brought people together to grow and develop tennis. Starting out with the Wilson Tennis Foundation, Hale quickly jumped on board at the state level, volunteering as the Sanction and Schedule Chair for many years. From there, Hale served on the USTA North Carolina Board. She served as Board President from 2002 through 2003, and then became president of the NC Tennis Foundation from 2004 through 2005. She and fellow USTA North Carolina President, Henry Hostetler, guided the NC Tennis Foundation and USTA North Carolina to a new home, 2709 Henry Street in Greensboro. Hale and Hostetler also launched a capital campaign, raising over $1.8 million dollars to pay for the building, the relocation of the Hall of Fame, and an endowment for tennis.

J.W. Quick was a longtime employee at Kayser Roth. In 1987, he partnered with Martina Navratilova against Chris Evert and another player in an exhibition. The following year he was asked to play again, this time partnering with Ivan Lendl against Andre Agassi and his partner. J.W. Quick is known as one of the finest men to play tennis in North Carolina. He always offers up kind words and by watching him on court, one would never know if he was winning or losing. Quick is truly a classy competitor and sportsman!

Dr. George C. Simkins, Jr. (Doc) competed in local, state and national championships from 1938 until he passed away in 2001. Due to insufficient data, it is hard to accurately identify the number of titles he won during his playing career. Here is what can be verified: 14 singles and doubles titles, the first beginning in 1956, the others spanning from 1981 to 1989. Simkins also won 11 State Championships from 1972 to 2001 and was a finalist six times during that same timeframe. Nationally, Simkins won three American Tennis Association (ATA) Championships.

Simultaneously, Hale began volunteering at both the USTA Southern Section and USTA National levels. She rose to become the USTA Southern Section President from 2015 through 2016, and continues to serve USTA Southern as the USTA Delegate. Paula Hale is a force for tennis, generously giving her time and talents to bring this sport to people throughout our country.

There is no doubt Simkins was an excellent tennis player, but what he accomplished off the court was even more profound! Simkins was the driving force behind the integration of tennis, swimming, and golf facilities in Greensboro as well as hospital privileges. His landmark Supreme Court case, (Simkins v Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital) changed the lives of many people.

John W. (J.W.) Quick is best described as “graceful and gracious with a huge chunk of humility.” Self-taught and highly accomplished, Quick was ranked the No. 1 tennis player in North Carolina 11 times. Quick captured several Greensboro local titles and eight NC State Singles titles, while also finishing runner-up 12 times in both singles and doubles! Quick competed and won at the National Championships for the American Tennis Association, winning two titles in the 35’s age division and finishing in the top four twice.

In the 1950’s, Simkins played the first interracial tennis match in Greensboro. He contacted Dr. Allen Coggeshall, the president of the Greensboro Tennis Association, and asked him and some of his players to participate in an exhibition match at the Windsor Recreation Center courts to help promote tennis in the black community. This match later led to integrating the courts at Memorial Stadium and eventually the Greensboro City tournament. Simkins also partnered with Dr. Robert (“Whirlwind”) Johnson to bring an exhibition match between Arthur Ashe and NC Hall of Fame member, Allen Morris. Althea Gibson also played a match against Bill Carrigan in that same exhibition.

Quick also developed into an excellent teacher of the sport, coaching many of our state’s finest players to state and sectional excellence.

In 1998, the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department named the indoor tennis facility (later the Indoor Sports Pavillion) at Barber Park, the Dr. George C. Simkins, Jr. Indoor Sports Pavilion.

The North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame now includes 96 members with the addition of Paula Hale, J.W. Quick, and Dr. George Simkins for the class of 2018. The inaugural class was inducted in 1975. The North Carolina Tennis Foundation selects two or three members each year to add to the Hall of Fame during Tennis Weekend. This class was inducted on Saturday February 3, 2018 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. For more information, visit

expenses, and help children play in their first tennis tournament. This year, the NCTF announced the creation of two new program grants. The High School Team Grant was designed to help high school tennis teams buy equipment, supplies, and fund facility projects. The Emily H. Preyer Family College Scholarship was created to help North Carolina high school seniors cover the cost of college expenses.

The mission of the North Carolina Tennis Foundation is to “support organizations and programs that enhance the lives of people through tennis and education.” One of the foundation’s main programs, the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) Network, truly takes this mission to heart. Through the North Carolina NJTL Network, more than 4,000 students participate in tennis and educational programs each year. NJTL goes beyond tennis and focuses on impacting youth with educational and character development. Students are introduced to a wide variety of educational topics that are designed to be fun and engaging. These NJTL programs are helping shape and grow children for a bright future.

Southern Cup

2017 Southern Junior Cup North Carolina has a long tradition of developing high performing junior players who have gone on to play at elite NCAA programs, with a select few advancing to become professional players. The standards are high and our athletes strive to be the best each year. One of the proving grounds for these athletes is the annual Southern Junior Cup events: 12U Southern Junior Cup and 14U-18U Southern Junior Cup.

Representing Team NC for the 14U – 18U Division, held September, 2017 in Chattanooga, TN:

The Southern Junior Cup is arguably our most competitive junior team event as it brings our top-ranked players together to represent our state. This event highlights teamwork and sportsmanship, and is an opportunity for our players and their families to become familiar with the team atmosphere they may experience when competing at the collegiate level. The Southern Junior Cup is the pinnacle of Team NC competition, and 2017 proved to be another very competitive performance by some of the top junior players in North Carolina. The players who compete at the Southern Junior Cup are selected by the USTA North Carolina Junior Competition Committee based on a number of factors and criteria. Nine boys and nine girls (three in each age division) are selected to represent North Carolina against the eight other states in the USTA Southern section. The Southern Junior Cup is our own version of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup, in that players put their individual standings aside and work together in a team format that includes singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. The energy, support, and off-court camaraderie highlights another dimension of this great event. With high-performance coaching, family support, and positive teammates, the environment at this three day event is team tennis at its best!

In January of 2017, the USTA Southern section adopted the Youth Tennis Progression, which is designed to create an enhanced experience for children starting tennis and playing in junior tennis tournaments. The goal is to ensure that young players between the ages of seven and ten are competing at appropriate levels as they progress through competitive stages based on age, participation and achievement. Our system will track the progress of junior players as they advance from the beginning orange levels, through the green level and then to yellow level junior/youth competition (levels are determined by the type of ball the player is using). This system serves as a guide for coaches, parents and players to help ensure that kids participate in events using the appropriate ball and court for their skill level.

Fed Cup

Asheville, North Carolina had the privilege of hosting the Fed Cup tie between the United States and the Netherlands on February 10-11, 2018. Thousands of fans packed the sold-out U.S. Cellular Center to watch Team USA begin its defense of the 2017 Fed Cup Championship. Captain Cathy Rinaldi selected Serena Williams, Venus Williams, CoCo Vandeweghe and Lauren Davis to represent Team USA. Meanwhile, Captain Paul Haarhuis selected Richel Hogenkamp, Arantxa Rus, Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs to represent the Dutch. The atmosphere was electric as posters, waving flags, and noisemakers could be seen scattered throughout the crowd. Fans from all across the country traveled to North Carolina to don the red, white and blue, making their presence felt. Day one began with Venus Williams and Rus taking the court for the first rubber. It was a dream start for the United States, with Williams winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. The second rubber featured Vandeweghe and Hogenkamp, the top rated player on the Dutch team. These two battled for over two and half hours with Vandeweghe clawing back to win 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, giving the USA a 2-0 lead. On day two of the Fed Cup tie, Venus Williams was once again the first to represent the United States. Williams put on a masterful performance, defeating Hogenkamp 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the win for Team USA. With the victory already in hand, Vandeweghe and Rus did not play the final singles rubber. Instead, Serena Williams made her long awaited return to competitive tennis, after giving birth in September of 2016. Serena played alongside her sister Venus in the doubles rubber, falling to Kerkhove and Schuurs 6-2, 6-3. Following their 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in Asheville, Team USA will continue its Fed Cup title defense when they travel to Aix-en-Provence, France in April.

USTA north carolina at the Fed Cup

During the week-long celebration of tennis in Asheville, USTA North Carolina partnered with local sponsors to provide a number of events. At the U.S. Cellular center, USTA staff hosted two Youth Days powered by Net Generation, two NJTL Net Generation Clinics, two on-court Net Generation demos and an on-court wheelchair tennis demo. At the Omni Grove Park Inn tennis courts, USTA staff hosted USTA Player Development Camps and Kids’ Clinics. At Asheville Racquet Club Downtown, USTA staff ran Green Ball, Middle School and High School Net Generation Clinics. In addition to our planned events, the USTA North Carolina booth was open throughout the Fed Cup tie! Fans who visited the booth received daily giveaways, including Fed Cup hand clappers, horns and noisemakers. Fans were also encouraged to participate in our Fed Cup photo contest on social media. Our two contest winners received an oversized tennis ball autographed by Serena Williams, Venus Williams, CoCo Vandeweghe and Lauren Davis. We would like to thank all the partners and volunteers who assisted throughout the Fed Cup tie. Our events would not have been possible without the help of our volunteers. A special thanks to the Asheville Tennis Association, Buncombe County Schools System, Ingles, Omni Grove Park Inn and U.S. Cellular Center.
