Newsletter October 2016—Term 1
Message from Sue Collins, Alison Monroe and Hilary Avery A warm welcome to all the new children and families that have started at Bromstone this term. We hope your time at our school will be a happy and successful one and that you will make the most of what Bromstone has to offer. If you have any concerns about your children’s education or welfare please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher. Everyone has started the new school year looking very smart in their school uniforms. Thank you for ensuring that your children are correctly dressed for school. Unfortunately we have a great deal of lost property at the moment; please come and look if your child has lost something, and remember to put names in EVERYTHING! We wish all our families a wonderful half term!

“Giving children the tools to lead a wonderful life”
School trips and events Swattenden Centre Year 6 had a fantastic time during their residential trip to Swattenden in September. The children took part in activities such as crate stacking, abseiling, high rope climbing, zip wire and assault courses. Highlights of the week include Irene and Mason taking a dip in the lake during river rafting, Mr Emptage impersonating Tarzan on the zip wire, and Mr Snook overcoming his fear of heights on the climbing wall!
“Thank you to staff who donated their own time, and well done to all the children who attended for their excellent behaviour.” Mrs Emptage
Dreamland Visit Helium, Sodium and Cobalt classes, who have been learning about forces and mighty metals, visited Dreamland Amusement Park as part of their topic. The children were given a talk by a Dreamland representative, and then were able to enjoy the rides. When they returned to school, they used what they had learnt to design and construct their own ride. Astrodome Krypton and Aluminium classes started their solar system topic with an Astrodome experience in the school hall. The children enjoyed stargazing and learning about the heliocentric system. Year 5 also had a visit from Hilderstone Amateur Radio Club where the children were able to contact a satellite in space and send and receive messages to people all over the world. Junior Road Safety Officer Conference
Isabel Povey, Lacey Lawley, Grace Chamberlain and Isabelle Barnes attended a Road-Safety conference at which, as delegates, they listened to 5 campaign proposals which included: BVIs – being seen and wearing fluorescent and reflective clothing Car seat and seatbelt safety Cycle helmet safety Safer crossing places Distraction awareness The children voted to deliver the first three to the school. They will come up with ideas for ways in which we can achieve these goals, and have been invited to the next school council meeting to help spread the message.
Year 6 Activity Week The children who didn’t attend Swattenden enjoyed a week of fun including mini-golf, cooking, design and technology (weaving) and a trip to the cinema. Year 6 Mexican Day The children and adults in year 6 dressed up and tasted some food from Ancient Mayan times and made Mexican decorations on 20th October. An excellent effort was made by all! Page 2

We have a number of families who do not collect their child on time at the end of the school day which causes unnecessary worry for the children concerned. Please note that children in Reception classes and Year 1 finish school at 3pm. All other year groups finish at 3.10pm. Please do not automatically assume that your child can attend after school club. We have limited spaces and usually we are full most evenings.
SCHOOL TRIPS This term we changed the way we operate school trips. Parents will be notified of an upcoming trip by letter, but instead of consenting for their child to attend, parents must ‘opt-out’ in writing via the school office.
The ‘Friend-Ship’ Bromstone School proudly boasts a fabulous new play structure thanks to the tireless efforts of the Parent Teacher and Friends Association. Funds have been raised over the last three years via community events, children's discos & sales of Christmas cards. Kelli Spray (Chair) said “We’re really proud to present the school with this fabulous play-boat. The children are delighted with their new acquisition and we would like to thank everyone who has supported our events to make this possible.” Congratulations and very well done to Reuben Targett and Chloe Berry, who both suggested the name ‘The ‘Friend-Ship’ and won themselves book tokens worth £20, and to Jenson Waldie and Lara Wrintmore, whose beautiful boat designs won them £10 book tokens.
ONGOING PARKING ISSUES! Despite several pleas to parents we still have a number of families who continue to park irresponsibly when dropping off and collecting their children. Please ensure that you DO NOT park on the zig-zag lines during the restricted times or on double yellow lines. In addition, please do not park on the grass verges or in our neighbour’s driveways in Rumfields Road. This obviously causes unnecessary stress for our neighbours.

Attendance News Our attendance figure is currently 95.7% which is under our target of 96.1%.
School Dinner Payments Please ensure all payments for school dinners are made every Monday on a weekly basis. Most parents at the school pay their children’s dinner money on time which means we can spend more money on your child’s education. Children with outstanding dinner arrears from the previous term will be unable to have a school dinner. We refer parents to our School Dinner Policy and ask for your cooperation to ensure payments are made in a timely manner.
Please ensure where possible children are in school. Medical / dentist appointments should be made outside of the school day to avoid disruption to your child’s learning. All children who achieve 100% attendance each term will be given a raffle ticket for a prize draw at the end of the year. If your child is consistently late after the registers have closed you could receive a penalty notice fine.
If your child is absent from school due to illness, please remember to call the School Office every day to inform us.
Lateness Unfortunately we are experiencing a number of problems with children arriving late for School. Continued lateness is extremely disruptive for your child. Families are reminded that lessons start promptly at 8.50am. Parents of children, who arrive after 8.50am, are requested to escort their child into school via the front gate and register them at the Office. A reason for lateness will be recorded. Penalty notices for continued lateness after the register has closed will be applied. Please therefore ensure your child is on time.
DOGS Dogs are not permitted on school grounds at any time.
Out of School Clubs Please note that you cannot book for breakfast or after school club on the day. All bookings should be made and paid for in advance to guarantee a place.
