Hebron Baptist is a Christ-centered, caring church.

Pastor’s Page We are going thourgh Vital Sign of a Healthy Church and we have talked about the privilege of Church Membership. Jonathan Leeman answers… “What is Church Membership” from 9Marks.org. It’s a declaration of citizenship in Christ’s kingdom. It’s a passport. It’s an announcement made in the pressroom of Christ’s kingdom. It’s the declaration that a professing individual is an official, licensed, cardcarrying, bona fide Jesus representative. More concretely, church membership is a formal relationship between a local church and a Christian characterized by the church’s affirmation and oversight of a Christian’s discipleship and the Christian’s submission to living out his or her discipleship in the care of the church. Notice that several elements are present: • a church body formally affirms an individual’s profession of faith and baptism as credible; • it promises to give oversight to that individual’s discipleship; • the individual formally submits his or her discipleship to the service and authority of this body and its leaders. The church body says to the individual, “We recognize your profession of faith, baptism, and discipleship to Christ as valid. Therefore, we publicly affirm and acknowledge you before the nations as belonging to Christ, and we extend the oversight of our fellowship.” Principally, the individual says to the church body, “Insofar as I recognize you as a faithful, gospel-declaring church, I submit my presence and my discipleship to your love and oversight.” The standards for church membership should be no higher or lower than the standards for being a Christian, with one exception. A Christian is someone who has repented and believed, and that’s who churches should affirm as members. The only additional requirement is baptism. Church members must be baptized, a pattern that is uniform in the New Testament. Peter said to the crowds in Jerusalem, “Repent and be baptized” (Acts 2:38). And Paul, writing the church in Rome, simply assumes that everyone who belongs to the Roman church has been baptized (Rom. 6:1–3). (I’ll consider this requirement of baptism further in the next post.) Church membership, in other words, is not about “additional requirements.” It’s about a church taking specific responsibility for a Christian, and a Christian for a church. It’s about “putting on,” “embodying,” “living out,” and “making concrete” our membership in Christ’s universal body. In some ways, the union which constitutes a local church and its members is like the “I do” of a marriage ceremony, which is why some refer to church membership as a “covenant.” It’s true that a Christian must choose to join a church, but that does not make it a voluntary organization. Having chosen Christ, a Christian has no choice but to choose to join a church.

Praying for Unreached People Groups Bhoi (Hindu traditions) in India The Bhoi community is mainly a landowning one, but a few are landless. A Brahmin priest officiates at marriages. At the wedding, the bride and groom walk around the fire seven times. They work in temples and are therefore accorded a high status in society. Every house has an altar to Manasamata. Beside this, there are images of Khandoba and a few other gods and goddesses. Every family has a number of deities. Nominal Christians who don't truly follow Christ's teachings may be an impediment to the Bhoi. Pray they will be able to see that there is a difference between disciples of Christ and those who are Christian only in name. Workers are needed. Jesus said to pray for workers, for the harvest is ripe. There may be no followers of Jesus among the Hindu Bhoi community at present, but pray for the ones that will soon be found. Pray they will be zealous to learn of Christ and follow him. Pray they will keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Pray that the Bhoi community will be able to care adequately for their families. Pray they will make schooling a priority for their children, so the children will be equipped to live in modern times.

L.I.F.E. GROUPS

We believe that God has given us the blessing of community to grow as His disciples. We need to fellowship, apply the scriptures, pray, make room for outsiders and encourage one another to be faithful to Christ. We cannot do that by sitting in a large group alone, we need to be in smaller groups for biblical fellowship and discipleship. Life Groups stands for Living in Faith Everyday. We hope that everyone is plugged into a group Sunday morning OR some time during the week. We are looking for people to join these LIFE Groups in September: • 2 groups on Sunday Nights • 1 on Monday Nights for College and Young Professionals • 2 on Tuesday Nights, 1 on Thursday Nights, 1 on Friday Nights All groups now are open for everyone to join! If you are interested in a OffCampus Life Group go to the Welcome Desk today or go online to “Ministries” then “Life Groups” to fill out a registration. Questions email: [email protected] If these do not work for you PLEASE try a LIFE Group offered on a Sunday.

Serve as a Teacher/Helper in the 4 & 5 Year Olds’ Life Group each Sunday (beginning in Nov.). Serve as a Teacher/Helper in the 3 Year Olds’ Worship Class once a month. Serve as a Teacher/Helper for K-5 Worship once a month.

Youth School is back in session! Many of our students are excited to be back in school and engaging with their classmates. We had our first Wednesday activities late in the month and things went great. We had a couple pool parties in August that were a blessing to the students. We helped serve the local schools by giving new teachers donuts and serving lunch and breakfast to Conner high school and Conner Middle school. We had a couple students attend a KBC evangelism training and they have since shared with several classmates! We are looking forward to a great fall semester!
