Grace Overflowing Bringing faith to life through God’s unchanging Word Throughout the month of October our congregation will be talking about what it means to be a place of Grace Overflowing. The leadership will meet to discuss things we can do to help us carry out that vision. But even better than talking about that vision, is seeing it in practice. One of the places to see that is in our food pantry ministry. Recently, a couple walked into the office when the food pantry was closed. They were referred to our church from another ministry that thought we could help. The two of them were homeless, living out of a tent. They had been looking for a job, but without a shower to get clean or nice clothes to wear they kept striking out. We gave them some food, helped them find some clothes to wear, allowed them to use our showers and spent time praying with them. Two days later they returned. In that short time, the husband started working a temporary job and they both had lined up permanent positions that would be starting in the next week. Wow! God is amazing! But it is also an amazing illustration of Grace Overflowing! That kind of thing happens regularly in our food pantry ministry. And it happens because of the generosity of this congregation – opening up their doors to the less fortunate, providing space and resources for this ministry to flourish. It happens because of a of dedicated volunteers who pick up deliveries, stock shelves, portion food, sign people in, help people shop for food, and just love all those who walk through our doors. Grace Overflowing indeed. One of the key players in that ministry is our food pantry administrator, Jan Fritz. For three years Jan has gone above and beyond in her dedication to our food pantry. She helped manage the installation of new equipment and the installation of new shelves that makes for a much easier time picking up food. She works with other agencies in town to make sure we are cooperating together in helping feed the hungry. Jan has secured new sources of funding to ensure our shelves remain adequately stocked and trained a great group of volunteers. Unfortunately, Jan is resigning from her position. She will still be around and plans to help us out in the time of transition and from behind the scenes. But she will be deeply missed by both our volunteers and the clients we serve. Please take time to thank Jan for her faithful service and for being a living example of Grace Overflowing. Bringing faith to life, Pastor Steve

October Prayer Focus – Our mission prayer focus for the month of October is our Service Sunday. As God’s people are released into the community to serve, we pray that this gives our congregation an opportunity to reflect God’s love in Word and deed so that many will see God’s grace overflowing from our congregation. But the impact of this service continues long after this one Sunday. Pray for the seeds that are sown and relationships that are formed that God would continue to work in the hearts of people. Please hold our service Sunday and all of its projects in your prayers.

ROOTED Like plants that draw nourishments through their roots, the roots of our faith draw the strength we need from God’s Word. Rooted is an 8-week class that strengthens those roots by reviewing the basic teachings of our faith. It’s not too late to join our class that meets on Thursdays at 6 pm in the Oasis. Anyone interested in learning more is invited to come and at the end of the class those interested in membership will have an opportunity to join the church. 2

2017 Contributions to the General Fund: Contributions to the General Fund were $39,000 under budget through September 17th and were $21,000 behind giving at the same time last year. To cover the expenses, we took $12,000 from the bequest in May. There is only $6,400 left in the bequest. We are so thankful for the overwhelming support for the debt reduction campaign, but we still need to cover our ongoing expenses. Please prayerfully consider increasing your level of support to the Church’s general fund through the rest of 2017.

After hearing the message on Sunday you are invited to follow us deeper by being part of one of the small groups that meets throughout the week. Check the calendar for available opportunities. Plan now to be part of this exciting opportunity.


The Oasis The Wednesday evening worship service begins at 6:00 pm in the Oasis. This is a casual worship about 40 minutes in length. The sermon is different than Sunday morning and more interactive. During October we will finish looking at the first 3 chapters of Genesis as we focus on “Foundations.” Child care is available for younger kids and the coffee is always ready. This service is a great opportunity to introduce someone to our congregation or invite someone who doesn’t normally come to church.

GOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN GRATITUDE AND GOD’S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD’S BIG STORY Have you ever paused to think about everything God has done for you? He created a planet that’s perfectly suited for otters and ostriches and you. Then, He sent His Son, Jesus, to that planet to die and be raised to life so He could have a forever relationship with you. Through the month, we’ll help kids refocus on all that God has done for them. Because when you know what God has done for you, YOU CAN BE THANKFUL—ALWAYS.

certainly enjoy the home grown fruits and vegetables. We have also received produce from Mr. Lawrence who drives from near Mt. Sterling, almost weekly to share his bounty. We have had some volunteers go with Jan or for Jan to Mt. Sterling to the DOT Store to purchase from our DOT grant.

Part Time FOOD PANTRY ADMINISTRATOR Jan Fritz is stepping down from her position of food pantry administrator and we are thankful for her 3 years of faithful service. Now, The Lutheran Church of St. John is accepting applications for a part time Food Pantry Administrator. This individual would work in the area of the Christian Caregiving Ministry including administration of all aspects of operating the Food Pantry. A complete job description can be optained in the church office. This position is for up to 16 hours per week. Applications should be submitted to the church office and are due by October 15.

--Wilma Tieman, Nursery Roll Coordinator SUNDAY SCHOOL MISSION FOCUS FOR OCTOBER is the our support for TREE OF LIFE The Mission offerings will assist in purchasing gifts for those on the Tree of Life.

CLOSET OF GRACE –Cleaning your closets? We estimate that over 60% of the families that come to our food pantry also visit our closet of grace, in search of clothes. Make sure they are CLEAN and STAIN FREE and FREE of HOLES. We do not have dumpster space if we have to throw away stained and torn items. We always especially need clothes for babies, kids and teens. Spread the word to your family and friends too. Thank you to Kim Duesdieker and Tina Beaston for all of their hard work sorting, hanging up clothes, and keeping the Closet of Grace in an orderly fashion.

BOARD OF CHRISTIAN CAREGIVING FOOD PANTRY In the month of August, our food pantry served 415 households (an increase of 64 households). These households were comprised of 1641 individuals (up 241 from July) and of those 623 were children (up by 67). A special thank you to everyone that helps each day the pantry is open and with the different shipments and food deliveries.

Recycle your plastic grocery/store bags with the Food Pantry. Please flatten them or fold them, which is then easier for the volunteers to use them for our clients.

This summer we have been continually been blessed with many people bringing their garden "excess" into the food pantry for our people. They 4

MANNA MEALS - If you or a loved one could benefit from having a couple of home cooked meals a week during a time of illness or after being hospitalized, please let Jim & Janet Totsch, Jan Fritz or Marilyn know and these can be arranged for 2 or 3 weeks. If you would consider taking meals to a church member in need, please let Jim & Janet know via email [email protected] or call 7798603 or 779-3303. Each person usually makes 2-3 meals a year.

On October 1 there will NOT be a breakfast as has been done on the last few Service Sundays. Instead of the breakfast, we will gather together at 5:00pm for a dinner in the Family Life Center. This will be a time to share any experiences we had doing the projects earlier in the day. We hope to also have some people join us from the neighborhood and from those who receive food from our food pantry. In addition, you are encouraged to invite anyone you have contact with while performing the project. There is a separate sign-up sheet for the dinner and we hope everyone will be able to attend. The following are the projects available on Oct. 1:

Gently Used Toys are being collected by the Board of Christian Caregiving for a Christmas Toy Give-a-way. Bring them to the office and place them in the box by the counter.

BBQ For Veterans at the Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy – The Veterans’ Home in Quincy is home to almost 400 veterans who have served their country. We will have an opportunity to barbecue for and serve them a special lunch at the Veterans’ Home as a way of saying thanks to all of them for their service. In addition, we will also prepare a lunch for Quincy’s police and fire fighters and deliver the lunches to them. We will need about 25 people to work this project. Our volunteers will cook and serve the lunch. In addition, some veterans will need someone to push their wheel chair from their room to the lunch and then back. Also, some volunteers will deliver the lunches to the police and firefighters. This is a great project for families and volunteers of all ages. (coordinators – Steve O’Hearn and Bill Keller).

BOARD OF EVANGELISM SERVICE SUNDAY Our mission statement reminds us that we, having been filled with God’s love and grace, should let God’s love and grace flow out of us to the world around us. On October 1 we will have opportunity to outflow God’s love and grace as we release God’s people for service. We will not have a 10:30 worship service but will serve in different projects around the community. We hope families and all ages will participate. Immediately following the 8:00am worship service at approximately 9:15am, there will be a sending of all of our people to various projects which will take place throughout Quincy. The projects will start at approximately 9:30am and continue to approximately 12:30pm, but you can come serve for as long as you are able. We hope all of you will sign up for one of the projects below to be part of this exciting opportunity. Our goal is to have no less than 135 of our members serving in one of the projects set forth below. There are projects which can be done by all ages so families can serve together if you desire.

Chaddock Chaddock provides quality treatment and education for children who deal with the after effects of trauma. We do not know now the service they will want us to provide. On prior Service Sundays, our group has provided some light landscaping and maintenance care, washing the exterior and cleaning the interior of the vans and cars owned by Chaddock, and some interior painting. Volunteers of all ages are welcomed. (coordinator – Jim Totsch ).


Quincy Downtown District – Volunteers will help the District and the community by picking up trash in Washington Park and around the stores in the District. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. (coordinator - ).

Sunset Home - For over 125 years, Sunset Home has provided a safe home for senior residents, some of whom are our own members. The group will help the residents with bingo and visit with them. In addition, the group will assist some residents going to and from the cafeteria and visit with them in the cafeteria. Families and volunteers of all ages are welcomed. (coordinator – ).

Quincy Park District – The Quincy Park District works every day to provide to the people of our city and county beautiful parks where families can picnic, play on playgrounds, bike, play softball and other activities. We will help on this day in some by cutting brush away from bike paths. This project will need up to 10 volunteers. (coordinator – Mick Gooding).

Illinois Veterans’ Home Memorial Garden - The Illinois Veterans’ Home serves almost 400 men and women who have served our country. They need assistance in their Memorial Garden . Volunteers will do some fall gardening, including weeding and mulching. Volunteers should bring shovels, rakes and hand garden tools (mark with your name to avoid confusion). (coordinator - Janet Enroth). City Bus Stop Shelters - Many residents of Quincy rely on public transportation. We will brighten their time waiting for a bus by cleaning up the bus stop shelters around the city. This is a good project for families. (coordinators – Nathan and Schaenon Elbus).

Adams County Healthy Foods Distribution – Saturday, October 7th 10:00am. Quincy Senior & Family Resource

Neighborhood - We want to be good neighbors to those who live near the church, so to show our kindness we will share a battery for a smoke detector with many of our neighbors. You can help distribute the batteries with an invitation to attend one of our worship services. Families and volunteers of all ages are welcome. (coordinator – Alyssa Gooding).

Center, 639 York Street, Quincy. The Board is looking for volunteers to participate in the third Mobile Healthy Foods Distribution in 2017. These are organized by the Madonna House and will be held at the Senior Citizens Center the Saturday October 7th, 2017. We have agreed to have 15 members help on each of the dates so please sign up for one or more of those.

Letter writing to Shut-ins - The group will meet in the Family Life Center and write notes to our shut-ins. Supplies you will need will be furnished. (coordinator – ).

If you know someone that could benefit from this distribution please let them know about it and have them bring something to carry the groceries in: a sturdy box, a wagon, a laundry basket, etc. This food distribution is made possible thanks to a grant from the Madonna House and the Community Foundation. SIGN UP by the office to help distribute food. This is a great opportunity for service as a family or individually.

Food Pantry and Closet of Grace - Each month the Lutheran Church of St. John serves over 1500 individuals with food and clothing. We will help to prepare by folding clothes, stocking shelves and portioning items to be given away. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. (coordinator – Jan Fritz ). 6

On the 19th, we will be recreating our goals for the coming years and developing action plans to implement those goals. The LCOSJ officers, all members of the elected and appointed Boards, and Presidents of the various clubs are invited to attend. Please RSVP to Marilyn in the Church office.


Coming in November: We will be conducting a modified stewardship program called “Disciples Living as Grace-Filled Stewards” this fall with a sermon-series and Bible studies on November 5th, 12th, & 19th. We will have the normal two services on the 19th along with the Voters’ Meeting and luncheon.

Thank you so much for your continued support to the Hearts Overflowing Debt Reduction Campaign. During the Impact (giving) Phase of the campaign, we will be using the Hearts Overflowing donations to pay down our mortgage on a monthly basis. Donations of more than $277,700 received through September have enabled us to reduce our mortgage principal from over $666,000 at the end of May to under $403,000. If you need more green Hearts Overflowing envelopes to assist you in regular giving to the campaign, additional envelopes may be found on the information desk in the Church Narthex. Using these envelopes will help the Board of Stewardship keep accurate giving records. Thank you for your sacrificial giving to the Campaign! Please continue to pray that God would bountifully bless the Lutheran Church of St. John through this Campaign.

BOARD OF YOUTH & FAMILY MINISTRIES Senior High - join us on Sunday morning for Sunday school at 9:30am in the Youth Room with Aaron Clark as their leader Aaron has been known to stop by and pick up donuts every once in a while! District Junior High Lock-In - All junior high youth are invited to participate in the district lock-in on November 10-11 in Washington, Illinois. If you are interested in attending you can pick up registration from Pastor Steve. Registration is due October 15. HY-VEE SCRIP - Members of the Teen LYF group sell scrip. Use these cards at the Hy-Vee grocery store and at their gas stations. It’s just like cash—Hy-Vee donates 5% of each card to our Teen LYF group. You can also buy Scrip during regular church office hours from Marilyn.

Leadership Retreat 2017:

Leaders – please mark your calendars for our Leadership Retreat on Thursdays, October 5th & 19th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Oasis. On the 5th, we will be reviewing our Mission, Vision, and Values and discussing the following questions: How did we do in 2016-17 in meeting our vision and values? What do we need to do to better serve God going forward? Are we achieving our goals? What have we accomplished in the past two years against our action plan?

Come Celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation

Stay after worship, come early before Sunday School and Bible Class, or before worship and enjoy some coffee, tea, or hot chocolate along with some breakfast treats and a chance to meet and visit with fellow members. This is a great opportunity to welcome visitors. A sign-up sheet is on the counter in the office if you would be willing to provide some breakfast treats one week.

There will be a joint worship service of the Quincy circuit churches hosted by St. James Lutheran Church. The service will be on Sunday, October 29 at 3:17 pm. (In military time that is 1517, the year the Reformation started!) Worship will include a message from Pastor Mike Burdick, a joint choir from all circuit churches and a celebration of the Lord’s Supper.


The offering collected at the worship will be divided between the Wittenberg Project, which shares the Gospel in the very place the Reformation began, and LCMS Disaster Relief as they seek to help families rebuild from the disastrous hurricanes.

There are lots of things we follow in life – Facebook, a blog, the stock market, in someone’s footsteps, or our favorite team. But there is only ONE we are all called to follow. You are invited to join us as we take a look at what it means to follow Jesus and what that looks like in our lives. We will continue the sermon series and small groups throughout October. We hope you can join us.

Following worship there will be a meal at approximately 5:00pm. A signup sheet is on the Information Center. Each congregation in our circuit will be providing a part of the meal. They ask that St. John’s provide hot side dishes. Others are bringing cold sides, salads and desserts. St. James, along with hosting the dinner, will be providing the meat, drinks, and table service. PLEASE sign up with how many will be attending, and what side you will be bringing to share. They will need this number by October 15th, in order to plan for enough meat.

SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE CLASS begins at 9:30 am in the Oasis. We are currently in a study of different religions and denominations. A new COMMUNITY WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP, a satellite type of group study, will continue on Monday evenings from 6:30pm-8:00pm in the Oasis. The satellite group will continue to study the Book of Romans until May 14st, check the calendar for specific dates. There is no cost to participate. A free-will offering will be accepted and applied to the cost of materials. Signup was held in July, however if you are interested in joining this group or have any questions, first call Susan Holzgraefe at 257-0857.

KELLER MONDAY NIGHT STUDY GROUP This home Bible study group meets on Monday evenings at Bill & Lynda Keller’s home. They will continue the FOLLOW small group study throughout October. WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY The Women’s group meets on Tuesday mornings at 9:30am in the Oasis. They will continue the FOLLOW small group study. All women are invited to join us. WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE CLASS The Wednesday morning Bible class is meeting at a 10:00 am in the Oasis. They will continue the FOLLOW group study. Everyone is welcome to join us as we will have plenty of comfortable seating. Some of the group then goes out to lunch following the class.


MENS BIBLE BREAKFAST This group of men meets on Thursday mornings at 6:30am in the Family Life Center, for Bible study and breakfast, and some of the best coffee in Quincy. We will be continuing the FOLLOW small group series. If you would like to join this group,

MARY & MARTHA GUILD The Mary & Martha members will meet on Tuesday, September 5th and observe the 500th Anniversary of Reformation. They will meet in the Family Life Center. MUSIC MINISTRY Join the Illinois Veterans Home Singa-long – A group of our members meet at Illinois Veterans Home Elmore Unit on Thursday, October 19th at 2:00pm to sing and provide a little cheer to the day for the veterans and staff. MEN’S CLUB The Men’s Club will meet at St. John’s on Monday, October 16, at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This is Guest Night and will be inviting the men from Golden & Clayton. Dave Tieman is the Devotional Leader for the evening. Pastor Steve Hayden will give the topic “A Man Named Martin” #5. Doug Allen, Dave Tieman, and Glenn O’Briant are serving on the Social Committee.

Men’s Club Annual Turkey Supper will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017, 4pm – 6:30pm. Tickets are available from any Men’s Club member or in the office. THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR began last Thursday. We are blessed with 157 students and 10 teachers. St. James has served the Quincy community with quality Christian education for 166 consecutive years. The Christian faith in intentionally nurtured and fed to students each day and is integrated throughout the day. Our faculty has over 175 years of classroom experience. Even though many schools and have dropped cursive handwriting and Spelling, we haven’t. It’s still an important part of our curriculum. Math facts mastery is emphasized.

TRUNK OR TREAT – Mark your calendars now! You are invited to come to the parking lot at St. James for Trunk or Treat Friday, October 27th from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm sponsored by the faculty at St. James School. Come dressed in your favorite costume and visit the many different vehicles for a treat. This is a way to help our neighborhood to get to know St. James too! We need many bags of candy for this event. Please bring them to your church office or to the school office. Serving in excess of 300 people last year, we ran out of candy, so we want to make sure we have enough this year. We hope you will come and enjoy some time with us! St John's is the host church for the 2017 Operation Christmas Child activities! Their Countdown Event was held this past month. We have received 400 boxes that will need to be assembled before Oct. 22nd. If your group or organization would like to organize a box assembly day or evening in October, please let me or Cheryl Kestner know. The next big Operation Christmas Child event will be held on Sunday, October 29th when a “Packing Party” will be held in the Family Life Center. Camp CILCA Homecoming Join Camp CILCA alumni and supports from the past 7 decades on Saturday, October 28 for a day overflowing with fun, food, and fellowship. 8:30am 5K Adventure Run. Register & Check-in at the large Picnic Shelter. 10:00am Race Starts! Register online, download a Registration Form at or on Bulletin Board $30 per runner/walker. Children under 12 run for free! 11:00-2:00pm Brats, sauerkraut, "German beverages", and more. 1:00pm Alumni Gathering Fun, Games, and live music all afternoon. 2:00pm Bonfire and closing devotion with a songbook sing along. The course consists of narrow trails, steep hills, a creek bed, scenic views, an stairs. An alternate route will be available for any who are nervous about navigating the creek bed.

“THE ROCK AND YOUR ROLE”: Bible Studies will begin at 7:30 on Friday evening based on I Peter 5:6-7 which says “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” We ask that each of you bring a small rock with your name on it. We will be doing several “rock activities” and using the Camp CILCA campground worship areas. Breakfast and lunch will be served on Saturday with more Bible studies and entertainment. At the center of Luther’s seal, and at the center of the Reformation 2017 logo, is a red heart in the middle of a white rose. (The heart and rose together are commonly referred to as Luther’s rose.) As Luther explained in one of his writings, “The heart in the middle of white rose shows that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace. It immediately sets [the believer] into the midst of a white, joyful rose, not like the peace and joy the world offers. That is why the rose should be white, not red. White is the color of the spirits and all angels.” At the center of that rose is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Jesus is the center and Rock of our faith. He has been since He came to Earth in the flesh, and He still is today. The word “still” bears witness to the ever and ongoing relevance of this one, saving truth for sinners.

REFORMATION HISTORY The Reformation was, first and foremost, all about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was then, and it still is now. The task of reformation never ends, for every person, in every generation, needs to hear the good news of their Savior from sin and eternal death.

The Luther Seal: Summary of the Gospel The most enduring symbol of the Lutheran Reformation is the seal that Luther himself designed to represent his theology. By the early 1520s, this seal begins to appear on the title page of Luther’s works.

Bold Public Witness to the Gospel — The Hallmark of Lutheranism The Lutheran Confessions were gathered into a book in 1580, called the Book of Concord. The group of Lutheran theologians asserted that what they were confessing was not merely their opinions, but an assertion of truth.


This logo takes many elements from Luther’s seal, which is the most easily recognized symbol for Lutheranism. It was common in Luther’s day for people to create a seal or coat of arms for their families, and that seal told the world what the family cared about or did for a living. It’s no surprise, then, that Luther’s seal was all about Jesus!

The tour highlights Quincy’s rich architectural history from the late Victorian through Mid-Twentieth century. Annual Special Event Halloween Car Show 8750 US 24, West Quincy, Missouri Sunday, October 8, 2017 Noon – 3:00 PM TNT Kartways is hosting a Halloween Theme Car Show. At the show the public will vote for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entries. Every half hour prizes will be given away and a 50/50 drawing.
