BlueJays sweeps Deer Creek “Anytime you can beat Deer Creek its good, but to do it two nights in a row is better,” said Guthrie Head Baseball Coach Jon Chappell after the ‘Jays came from behind Tuesday night to defeat the Antlers 4-3 at Squires Field. The BlueJays clinched the district championship Monday night at Deer Creek. While it took 9 innings to decide the game, the ‘Jays pushed across four runs in the top of the ninth to win the game 6-2. In Tuesday night’s game, the visitors jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Caleb Eldridge hit a long home run on a 0-2 count in the top of the third inning. The ‘Jays responded in the bottom of the inning when John Clark singled to lead off the inning. Donovan Jordan bunted Clark to second. Clark then scored on a Luke Davis double to tie the score. Bryan Dutton then doubled Davis home for a 2-1 lead.

That lead would hold up until the seventh inning, when the Antlers strung together a base-on-balls, a double, a sacrifice bunt and a single to take a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Clark started the rally with a walk. Davis, Dutton and Landry Chappell then strung together two base hits and a fielder’s choice to tie the score. For the second night in a row, senior Hayden Seifert came through with the clutch hit that drove Dutton home with the winning run. The BlueJays out hit the Antlers 10-5. Davis, Seifert and Clark had two hits apiece. Dutton, Landry Chappell, Jacob Chappell and Clint Simek accounted for the remaining hits. Reed Roberts went the distance for Guthrie with seven strikeouts and three walks. In Monday night’s game, the ninth inning started with a walk

to Jordan. Davis then sacrificed him to second base. Walks to Dutton and Landry Chappell loaded the bases. Seifert then doubled the three runners in for a 5-2 Guthrie lead. A single by Clint Simek drove Seifert home and the ‘Jays had a 6-2 lead. The ‘Jays got on the board in the first inning when hits by Dutton, Landry Chappell and Seifert plated a run. The BlueJays made it 2-0 in the third inning when a walk to Landry Chappell started the inning and consecutive singles by Seifert, Jacob Chappell and Simek plated the run. The ‘Jays left the bases loaded when the 7-8-9 spots in the order all made outs. The game stayed at 2-0 until the home half of the fifth when Deer Creek strung together a baseon-balls and three hits to tie the game up at 2-2. The Antlers had the winning run at third base in the bottom of the 8th

inning and did not score, setting the stage for the BlueJays 9th inning. Dutton pitched the first six innings. Dutton surrendered five hits; three walks and struck out four Deer Creek batters. Jacob Chappell picked up the win in relief with three innings of one hit ball. Chappell walked two and did not record a strikeout. Guthrie out hit the home team 11-6 in the game. Seifert led the way with three hits and four runs batted in. Simek also had three hits with the other two runs batted in. Reed Roberts in the role of the designated hitter chipped in with two hits. Dutton, Landry Chappell and Jacob Chappell had the other hits. The ‘Jays hitters coaxed six base-on-balls out of the three Deer Creek pitchers, but also registered 10 strikeouts in the game.
