[email protected] Global Stock Market Review, March 2004 •
The S&P/Citigroup BMI Global Composite1 edged 0.15% lower in March, ending a record string of 11 straight monthly gains for stocks globally. Despite the decline in March, the index posted a gain for the first quarter of 2004, rising 4.16%.
•
Surging stock prices in Japan lifted the BMI Asia-Pacific to a 9.81% jump in March, while the BMI Europe and the BMI North America fell 2.99% and 1.14% in U.S. dollar terms, respectively.
•
Emerging regions remained relatively strong in March, rising 1.15% overall. The BMI Mid-East & Africa rose 3.28% and the BMI Latin America added 1.66%, all in U.S. dollar terms.
•
Among individual stock markets, the 14.61% jump for the BMI Japan led developed markets in March, aided in part by the dollar’s nearly 5% slide versus the yen. In the first quarter of 2004, several countries enjoyed double-digit percentage gains, while just two declined in local currency terms.
•
Leading among emerging markets in March were the BMI Peru and the BMI Russia, which gained 16.38% and 13.82%, respectively, in U.S. dollar terms. The strongest markets globally in the first quarter of 2004 were the BMI Colombia and the BMI Russia, which soared 45.14% and 33.87%, respectively, in U.S. dollar terms.
•
Value stocks rose as growth stocks continued to lag in March. The BMI Developed World Value edged 0.10% higher, while the BMI Developed World Growth decreased 0.54%, each in U.S. dollar terms. Value stocks have risen for 12 straight months, climbing 53.58%, versus a 43.53% gain for growth stocks during the period.

Executive Summary The global rebound in stock prices that began in April 2003 ended its record string of 11 straight monthly gains in March, as the S&P/Citigroup BMI Global Composite edged 0.15% lower. Despite the end of the streak for stocks as a whole, certain investment disciplines continued their winning ways. The BMI Developed World Value stretched its series of monthly gains to 12, while smallcap stocks rose for the 13th straight month.
Standard & Poor’s
•
The broad rally in stocks globally ended in March 2004, but just barely. Value stocks and small-cap stocks continued their winning ways, with stocks in Japan soaring.
•
While a majority of markets declined in the month, just three Developed World markets fell in the first quarter of the year in U.S. dollar terms, and only two did so in local currency terms.
•
Emerging markets were mixed but rose on balance in March, and rising markets far outnumbered those that fell over the first quarter of the year. In fact, 14 of the 24 emerging markets posted double-digit percentage gains in the first quarter in local currency terms, while just one country posted a loss of that magnitude.
•
By investment style, growth stocks lagged for the sixth straight month. The BMI World Value edged 0.10% higher in March, topping the 0.54% decrease for the BMI World Growth. Over the past 12 months, Value outperformed its Growth counterpart by more than 10 percentage points.
•
The rally in small-cap stocks continued in March. The EMI Developed World gained 1.57%, topping the 0.71% decline for the PMI Developed World. Among Emerging Markets, the EMI advanced 1.73%, versus a 0.98% rise for the PMI.
