ouble trouble has taken on a whole new meaning at Ridgeview High School this season. Its cross-country team is led by not one, but two sets of twins. Freshmen Jane and Jessica Whitticar are identical twins. Sophomores Hailey and Whitney Gieschen are fraternal twins but look enough alike that head coach Drew Carpenter relies on their shoe colors to tell who’s who. “Having one set of twins isn’t that unusual,” Carpenter said. “Two? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that. Definitely not in succession like (the Gieschens and Whitticars).” The girls became fast friends during preseason workouts. The Whitticars attend Redmond Proficiency Academy but participate on Ridgeview’s athletic teams, so they were nervous about fitting in with a team that spends all day together during the season. Those worries vanished as soon as they all made eye contact that first day. The Gieschen sisters immediately took their younger counterparts under their wings. All four agreed while

Now they’ll have to learn our names!’” It’s not just biology that binds the quartet together; each individual’s best time in a 5,000-meter race
— standard length in high school cross-country — is one of the four fastest on the team this season. Whitney is the pure runner of her family and the faster one, too. Hailey participates in field events during track season and trains year-round for that. Their sibling rivalry extends far beyond athletics, though it’s where they’re most competitive. “We always want to beat each other at everything,”

Blundell threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Seth Whitley in the first quarter to tie the score at 7-7. Brett Yeakey led the Ravens with 212 rushing yards, while Logan Green ran for 62 yards on 11 carries. Meanwhile, No. 7 Summit quickly took control of third-ranked Redmond in an eventual 49-7 win at Summit High School. Derek Brown ran for 104 yards and ended the Storm shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown. Redmond (4-2, 1-1 IMC) will have a chance to rebound at home against Mountain View on Friday, while Ridgeview (3-3, 0-1) hosts Summit.

as to point out the scar on Jane’s forehead from when Jessica rammed it into a gatepost. Despite their protestations, the duo’s race times tell a different story. In four 5,000-meter events so far this season — totaling more than 90 minutes of race time — the twins’ cumulative times are 1.3 seconds apart. At Saturday’s George Fox XC Classic in Salem, Jane finished a whopping four-tenths of a second ahead of her sister.
It’s an improvement from middle school, says Carpenter, when they finished some races while holding hands. “I think subconsciously they will wait for each other if one falls behind,” Carpenter said. “Cheering for them in a race, with Whitney and Hailey, I know who should be where, but I’m sure at times I call Jane and Jessica by the wrong names.” As underclassmen, all
four will participate in at least two more cross-country and three track and field seasons together. The chances they can accomplish their goal of a state championship are slim given Summit High School’s longstanding dominance. However, if they manage to pull it off, it will give a whole new meaning to the term “twinning.”
