TOWN OF LANTANA POSITION DESCRIPTION POLICE DEPARTMENT- POLICE DISPATCHER Full Time Position Reports to Communications Supervisor
FLSA Non-Exempt Position
JOB SUMMARY The primary function of this position is to receive and handle routine and emergency telephone calls, receive and transmit radio calls, clerical work, and data entry and retrieval. All work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations, and is under the supervision of the Communications Supervisor assigned by the Chief of Police or his designee. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in this classification. Monitors, initiates, and/or responds to radio traffic on Police frequencies. Maintains a thorough radio log for record keeping and information purposes. Queries FCIC/NCIC, as well as PALMS computer system for requested information. Provides routine information on request. Answers telephones, including E-911 lines. Data entry, FCIC/NCIC entry, and maintenance of same through FCIC/NCIC validations. Performs related work as required. Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) input and retrieval Records Management Search (RMS) input of information and search
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to think and act quickly and properly in emergencies. Ability to prioritize. Ability to reduce rambling and disconnected material into concise and accurate messages. Ability to analyze a situation accurately and to take or suggest an effective course of action. Adequate understanding of technical operation of modern communications system to allow intelligent reporting of equipment failures. Physical and mental ability to work effectively under all conditions encountered. Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations applying to the dispatcher’s responsibilities. Knowledge of FDLE rules and regulations applying to the dispatcher’s responsibilities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Town officials and the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidate must possess a High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year personal computer/data entry experience. Candidate must possess Department of Health issued Call Taker Certification. Experience in Public Safety operations preferred. Where an emergency impacts the Town of Lantana, all employees are subject to work or return to duty as directed to ensure continuation and restoration of services, maintain safety and fulfill the Town’s responsibility to its citizens.
