GAME 24 | UTSA | FEBRUARY 4, 2017 DYNAMIC DUO Blazer posts William Lee and Tosin Mehinti are both moving up the charts on UAB’s career blocked shots list. Lee enters Saturday’s game with UTSA second all-time at UAB with 202 rejections and will need 65 blocks over his final two seasons to surpass the 266 of Alan Ogg to become the school’s all-time leader. Mehinti begins Saturday third all-time at UAB with 155 after passing Cameron Moore with three blocks Nov. 29 against Alabama A&M. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

THIS IS BLOCKINGHAM The UAB men’s basketball team continues to block shots at an extremely high rate and enters play Saturday against UTSA third in Conference USA and 40th in the NCAA with 5.0 blocks per game. The Blazers have blocked at least four shots in 15 of the first 23 games, including a season-high 11 on Nov. 29 against Alabama A&M. Junior forward William Lee averages 2.4 blocks per game and ranks first in the league and is 20th in the NCAA. UAB finished last year ranked second in the NCAA with 6.1 blocked shots per game and ended the season with 202 blocks to record the sixth-most in the country. WHAT A DIFFERENCE UAB senior forward Tosin Mehinti made a career-best six free throws Dec. 3 when he went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe against Auburn. Mehinti is now 35-for43 from the free throw line. Mehinti is fourth on the team with an .795 free throw percentage. Last season, Mehinti shot only 52.6 percent from the free throw line and didn’t make his 35th free throw until Feb. 25, 2016 in the 28th game of the season. Mehinti is five free throws away from matching his entire output from last season. FINDING A WAY UAB turned in a two-point victory Jan. 19 when the Blazers defeated Florida Atlantic 80-78. The Blazers have enjoyed a great deal of success when playing in close games. In fact, UAB is 15-6 in its last 21 games decided by five points or less. DOUBLE TROUBLE UAB junior forward William Lee secured his third double-double of the season for the Blazers when he finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds Jan. 26 in a win over Louisiana Tech. Lee now has 12 career double-doubles and has helped UAB to a very successful record over those 12 games. In fact, UAB is 10-2 when Lee records a double-double. HALFTIME HIGH UAB went 20-2 last season and is 12-4 this season when leading at halftime. The Blazers are now 73-14 when leading at halftime since the start of the 201213 season after holding a 42-16 lead Jan. 28 against Southern Miss.

2016-17 UAB MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

IT’S BEEN A WHILE UAB junior forward William Lee pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds Jan. 14 in a victory over Marshall. It’s the most rebounds by a Blazer since Rod Rucker had 20 against New Mexico on Nov. 21, 2013. Lee is one of only three players in Conference USA with at least 17 rebounds in a game. FOUR OR MORE UAB junior forward William Lee swatted five shots Jan. 5 in a 54-52 victory over North Texas. Lee enters play Thursday against UTEP with 17 career games with four or more blocked shots. The Blazers are 16-1 and have won 16 straight games when Lee has at least four blocks. MAKE IT RAIN UAB shot a single game school-record 72.1 percent from the field in its 84-73 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 7. The Blazers shot 31-for-43 from the field and now own the highest single-game field goal percentage in the NCAA this season, passing the 70.3 percent Wofford shot Dec. 6 against Virginia Wise. UAB has shot at least 70.0 percent from the field in back-toback seasons after hitting 70.0 percent against UTSA (Jan. 7, 2016) last season. STREAK BUSTERS UAB snapped a significant home winning streak for the second straight year when the Blazers posted an 84-73 victory at Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 7. With the win, UAB ended the Lumberjacks’ 31-game home winning streak, which stood as the third-longest in the NCAA, trailing only Kansas and South Dakota State. Last season, the Blazers snapped Old Dominion’s 32-game home winning streak with a 72-71 overtime victory at the Constant Convocation Center. AWARD AFTER AWARD UAB junior guard Nick Norton continues to contribute to Blazer basketball despite being sidelined with a torn ACL. Earlier this week, Norton was appointed as a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Competition Committee. Norton was also named a nominee for the Allstate NABC Good Works Team. BLOCK PARTY William Lee went the first two games of the season without picking up a foul and has committed no more than two fouls in 16 of 23 games this season. Lee has also racked up 56 blocks throughout the first 23 games. He has been remarkably efficient in his blocked shot efforts, ranking first in the nation in blocks per foul at 1.6. Last season, Lee topped the country with a 1.704 blocks per foul. As a freshman, Lee was 67th in the country registering 0.761 blocks per foul. DIAPER DANDY Robert Ehsan began his first season as head coach of UAB on Nov. 11 as the 10th-youngest head coach in the NCAA at 34 years old. Maurice Joseph of George Washington stands as the youngest coach in the NCAA at 31 years old. Ironically, Ehsan and Joseph met Nov. 22 when UAB faced George Washington in the consolation game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.

UAB BLAZER BASKETBALL | 2016-17 VICTORIOUS DEBUT UAB head coach Robert Ehsan won his first career game Nov. 11 when he turned in an 86-66 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Ehsan is now the fourth head coach in UAB history to win his Blazer debut. Additionally, the 20-point win is the second-largest margin of victory for a coach earning his first win at UAB. Jerod Haase picked up his first UAB win by 46 points when he opened the 2012-13 season with a 105-59 win over Young Harris. PRESEASON WATCH LIST UAB forward William Lee was named to the Lute Olson Award Preseason Watch List in October. The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I player who has played at least two seasons. The recipient of the award will be announced at the Collegeinsider.com awards banquet on April 31 in Phoenix, site of the men’s DI Basketball Championships.

UAB BLAZER BASKETBALL | 2016-17

GAME 24 | UTSA | FEBRUARY 4, 2017 2016-17 BOX SCORES

2016-17 BOX SCORES Game #4 | November 21, 2016 No. 5 Kansas 83, UAB 63 Josh Jackson has been huddling with the Kansas coaching staff since the start of the season, and the message has been the same: If you quit fouling so much, you would say on the floor more. Jackson poured in 22 points, while backcourt mates Frank Mason and Devonte Graham helped carry the load as fifth-ranked Kansas beat UAB 83-63 in the semifinals of the CBE Classic. Mason finished with 20 points and Graham had 16 for the Jayhawks (3-1), who advanced to play Georgia. Kansas raced to a big early lead, weathered several runs by UAB, then relied on their backcourt of Jackson, Mason and Graham to pull away from the Blazers down the stretch. Dirk Williams led the Blazers (2-2) with 13 points. Tyler Madison had 12. The Blazers got off to what looked like it would be a catastrophic start, turning the ball over seven times and missing their first 11 field-goal attempts. Their only points over the first 10 minutes came on foul shots, and by the time they finally hit the Jayhawks led 23-3. The Blazers took advantage with a run of their own. They ripped off a 17-2 run over the next 6 minutes as the Jayhawks missed seven straight shots of their own, and they quieted a partisan crowd by getting within 27-20 late in the half. Graham hit a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to go, but UAB went coast-to-coast for a buzzer-beating basket to deflate the Jayhawks. The teams resumed trading runs early in the second half before the Jayhawks began pulling, and four 3-pointers by Svi Mykhailiuk -- who finished with 15 points -- helped put the game out of reach. Dirk Williams added 15 and UAB beat George Washington 81-74 in the third-place game of the CBE Classic.

Cokley helped the Blazers (3-2) race out to a 15-point first-half lead, then Lee came alive when the Colonials

(3-2) tied it 60-all late in the game. The junior forward hit a pair of 3s and scored nine points during a 12-2 run that gave UAB a 72-62 lead with just over two minutes to go.

George Washington couldn’t make enough stops down the stretch to make another run.

Tyler Cavanaugh had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the

Colonials. Yuta Watanabe added 18 points and Jaren Sina finished with 16 in a game plagued by turnovers on both sides.

St. Mary’s is used to playing in the Orleans Arena every March, having been there annually since 2009 for the West Coast Conference Tournament. Due to scheduling conflicts, the 15th-ranked Gaels got an early season look at the venue, and earned a 76-63 victory over UAB. Jock Landale scored 20 points to lead No. 15 St. Mary’s (5-0). He was 9 of 11 from the field. In doing a much better job of not getting beat off the dribble, something Bennett was looking for in the Gaels’ stopover in Las Vegas, they did a good job of limiting UAB’s shot selection at key moments. The defensive stops allowed St. Mary’s to go on significant runs to keep the Blazers well behind. The Gaels outscored UAB 30-16 during a 14-minute stretch in the first half to open their largest lead of the game, 40-23. The Blazers wouldn’t go away, however, as they came out of the locker room and used a 16-7 run to cut the lead to seven, at 50-43 with 14:33 left. But the Gaels used a 13-3 run of their own, ignited by three consecutive 3-pointers, to push the lead back to double digits, at 63-46 with 9:29 remaining. Though it is just five games into the season, St. Mary’s looked in mid-season form for most of the game, with solid ball movement and noticeable chemistry the Blazers are still looking for without junior point guard Nick Norton, who was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Emmett Naar, Stefan Gonzalez and Calvin Hermanson each scored 12 points for the Gaels. They were 27 of 52 (.519) from the field, including 50 percent (13 of 26) from 3-point range. St. Mary’s also hit all nine of its free throws. Meanwhile, the Blazers continue to struggle without Norton, who came into his third year as a starter but was lost for the season 15 minutes into the season-opener. The Blazers shot 47 percent from the field, hitting 26 of 55, and were led by Chris Cokley, who had a season-high 20 points. Deion Lavender also had a season high with 12. Jared Harper scored 21 points and Danjel Purifoy added 16 to lead Auburn to a 74-70 victory over UAB. The young Tigers (6-1) proved capable of handling a hostile environment in their first true road game of the season, outlasting UAB (4-4) in front of the first sellout crowd at Bartow Arena since March 23, 2010. Auburn shot 50 percent from the field and outscored UAB 41-33 in the second half. The Tigers knocked down 11 3-pointers, the most since they made 13 in the season opener against North Florida, outscoring UAB 33-12 from beyond the arc. Harper torched the Blazers for 15 points on five 3-pointers in the first half, but the true freshman was forced to take a seat early in the second half with three fouls. Purifoy, the freshman forward who was tied with Mustapha Heron for the team lead in points per game entering the contest, stepped up in Harper’s absence. Purifoy scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half, including three of his four 3-pointers. Heron also asserted himself in the second half, scoring eight of his 11 points after the intermission. UAB had a 40-31 advantage on the boards, but Chris Cokley was forced out of the game with 8:24 remaining when he was called for a personal foul and subsequently drew a technical foul call for arguing with the referee. He finished with eight points and seven rebounds. William Lee led UAB with 13 points, and Hakeem Baxter added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Auburn regained the lead, its first since the 13:29 mark in the first half, on a T.J. Dunans jumper with 13:34 remaining in the second half. The bucket came in the middle of a 14-2 run that gave Auburn the lead for good. 2016-17 BOX SCORES Game #21 | January 26, 2017 UAB 79, Louisiana Tech 70 Dirk Williams scored 17 points and UAB beat Louisiana Tech, 79-70 in a Conference USA game marred by a benches-clearing brawl that resulted in the Bulldogs finishing the game with just four players Thursday. Chris Cokley scored from the low post and was fouled by Omar Sherman with 6:03 left in the game to put UAB up by 13 points, 63-50. And then the fight broke out. UAB’s Hakeem Baxter appeared to throw a shoulder into the back of Louisiana Tech’s Jacobi Boykins while players were sorting out the foul call and the confrontation escalated. Boykins was immediately ejected for throwing a punch with a closed fist and both were assessed flagrant technical fouls and ejected for fighting. UAB’s William Lee was assessed a Class A technical foul, but was not ejected. Players from both benches spilled onto the floor and the entire Louisiana Tech bench was ejected for leaving the bench during a fight. Four of the six players on the UAB bench also were ejected. The head coaches remained, but assistant coaches and support staff on both sides were ejected. With all of its reserves and Boykins ejected, Louisiana Tech played the final six minutes with four players: Erik McCree, Jalen Harris, DaQuan Bracey and Sherman. Despite being a player short, Louisiana Tech outscored UAB 20-16 over the final six minutes. The win pulls UAB into a three-way tie for second place in Conference USA with Louisiana Tech and Marshall, all two games behind conference-leading Middle Tennessee. Cokley finished with 15 points for UAB (13-8, 6-2). William Lee finished with 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Deion Lavender added 10 points. Erik McCree finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (14-7, 6-2). Harris finished with 13 points and Sherman 12. Boykins scored 10 points before he was ejected.
