and notes

THE HERD BACK AT THE VBC Alabama Huntsville earned its first WCHA win of the season on Saturday night by a 5-2 score to earn the conference series split against the visiting Lake Superior State Lakers. LSSU won the defensive struggle on Friday in the opener by a score of 1-0.

HOME SWEET HUNTSVILLE The Chargers picked up their first home victory since the 2010-11 campaign when UAH defeated Bemidji State by a 4-3 score on Jan. 8, 2011. In between Saturday’s win and the win in 2011, UAH was 0-28-3 in home contests. OFFENSIVE ERUPTION UAH posted five goals and seven assists in Saturday’s win, which is the highest mark of the season in a single game for both statistical categories. Senior Jeff Vanderlugt (Richmond Hill, Ontario) led the Chargers offense with three points on one goal and two assists, followed by freshman Max McHugh (Seattle, Wash.) with two points from one goal and one assist. GUERRIERO DOUBLES UP Sophomore Carmine Guerriero (Montreal, Quebec) made both starts in the series against Lake Superior State this past weekend, his first back-to-back start of the season. Guerriero came out on the losing end of the defensive struggle on Friday night, despite totaling 33 saves. He continued to play well on Saturday, picking up his second win of the season after a 23-save performance and held LSSU to zero goals on 10 power-play opportunities. Military Backgrounds UAH head coach Mike Corbett spent 10 seasons at the Air Force Academy in Colorado prior to joining UAH, while assistant Matty Thomas is a Naval Academy graduate.

OFFENSE PICKING UP The Chargers own a total of 59 points from 22 goals and 37 assists this season, which ranks well above UAH’s 31 points on 11 goals and 20 assists through 12 games last season. The Chargers defense has also improved since the previous season, totaling a 2.96 goals against average compared to 4.75 goals against through 12 games in 2013-14. YOUTH THRIVING The Chargers have four underclassmen leading the way in points sthis season. Brandon Carlson (2g-3a), Max McHugh (3g-2a), Matt Salhany (1g-4a) and Brandon Parker (0g-5a). McHugh leads UAH with three goals, while Parker has a team-high five assists. ON THE DEFENSE Along with being tied for the UAH points lead, Carlson has anchored the defensive unit with 31 blocks, followed by junior Frank Misuraca and freshman Cody Champagne with 20 blocks apiece. The Chargers defense has a total of 204 blocks this season. SENIOR LEADERSHIP Senior Doug Reid (Innisfil, Ontario) serves as captain for the second consecutive season for the Chargers, while senior Craig Pierce (Roswell, Ga.) is the assistant captain for the first time in his career. Reid has played in 101 games and totaled 14 points (2g-12a), with Pierce appearing in 88 career contests and notching 12 points (8g-4a).

head coach mike corbett Mike Corbett is in his second season as head coach of the UAH Hockey program in 2014-15, after guiding the team through its inaugural WCHA season in 2013-14. Corbett earned his first career head coaching victory and the program’s first-ever WCHA win on Dec. 7, 2013, at Bowling Green. In his first season at UAH, Corbett led one of the youngest rosters in the country through one of the toughest strength of schedules in Division I hockey. Entering 2014-15, he had inked 10 more freshmen as the program continues to build back to its previous successful level. Corbett spent 10 years as an assistant at Air Force including serving as the team’s associate head coach in the 2012-13 season. “Mike Corbett has spent the last decade recruiting elite young men to the United States Air Force Academy and winning championships,” said UAH Director of Athletics Dr. E.J. Brophy. “We are very confident that he is the man to lead Charger Hockey into the prestigious WCHA and back to winning on a consistent basis here at UAH.” During Corbett’s time with the Falcons, the team won five Atlantic Hockey Association tournament championships and also appeared in the NCAA tournament five times with berths in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012. Winners of the AHA regular season title in 2009 and 2012, Air Force ranks in the top 10 in the country in winning percentage over the last seven seasons while stringing together seven consecutive winning seasons for the first time in program history. On the ice Corbett focused on the Air Force blue line, and the team established Falcon records for fewest goals allowed per game in three straight seasons from the 2006-07 year to the 2008-09 campaign. Under his watch, the Falcons featured three AHA Defensemen of the Year winners, and Air Force has consistently ranked among the best in the nation in fewest shots allowed per game. With Corbett assisting in the program’s recruiting effort, the team also featured two AHA Player of the Year honorees, three Division I All-Americans, and 17 all-conference selections. During his time on the bench, the Falcons also had the only Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist in AFA history. No stranger to WCHA hockey, Corbett was a defensive force during his playing days at Denver from 1992-97 where he was an alternate captain for two seasons and a two-time WCHA All-Academic Team member. Additionally, in 1997 he was a finalist for the NCAA Hockey Humanitarian Award. He graduated from Denver in 1996 before also earning his master’s degree from the university in 1998. After his time in Denver, Corbett served as the head coach for the Butte Irish in the America West Junior Hockey League from 1997-2000, earning AWHL Coach of the Year honors in 1997-98. He then led the league’s Billings Bulls for a season before joining the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League in 2001. After that stint, Corbett served as the director of the Colorado Springs Amateur Hockey Association in 2002 prior to joining the Air Force staff. Corbett and his wife, Stacey, have two children, Jordan (23) and Mayson (18).
