Game 9, Road Game 4

UC Riverside (5-3) at LMU (2-5) Gersten Pavilion‚ Los Angeles, CA Saturday, December 13 at 7:00 pm PST Series Record 6-3 Streak L 2 Last Meeting L 82-66 at LMU, December 5, 2003 Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside Women’s Basketball Team travels to Loyola Marymount Saturday evening before taking a one-week break for final exams. Tip at Gersten Pavilion is slated for 7 pm PT. The Highlanders (5-3) have lost three straight games heading into the weekend, but the most recent loss came in a hard-fought battle at UCLA which saw UCR lead by as many as 10 points in the first half, before the Bruins were able to claw their way to a 57-43 victory. Brittany Crain extended her string of consecutive double-digit scoring performances to 17 by scoring a game-high 15 points at UCLA. She ranks fifth in the nation overall in scoring at 24.6 points per game, and leads the Big West. As a team, UC Riverside is second in the conference in scoring at 71.9 points per game. They are also ranked in the top three in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage, all while committing the fewest turnovers per game in the league. LMU is 2-5 on the year, most recently dropping a pair of road games at Northern Arizona, 82-64, and Seattle, 62-57. The Lions are basically a fivewoman team as Deanna Johnson (13.7 ppg), Sophie Taylor (11.4), Taylor Anderson (11.3), Leslie Lopez-Wood (11.1) and Emily Ben-Jumbo (9.0) account for 86 percent of the teams scoring and have played 75 percent of the team’s minutes. Each of LMU’s top four scorers averages more than 30 minutes per game. As a team, the Lions are making 40.1 percent of their shots from the field, but just 26.7 percent from long distance. Opponents have taken 50 more free throw attempts than LMU on the year, and committed 20 fewer turnovers. The Highlanders are 6-3 all-time against Loyola Marymount, but the Lions picked up wins in the two most recent meetings between the clubs back in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons 2014-15 Big West Women’s Basketball Standings Through December 11

JOHN MARGARITIS

Head Women’s Basketball Coach Head Coach John Margaritis has taken the Highlanders women’s basketball team to new heights in his 10 seasons in Riverside. Margaritis continues to rewrite the UCR record books averaging 14.4 wins per season and making the postseason in five of eight years (three NCAA Tournament appearances and two WNIT appearances). The Highlanders have won three Big West Tournament titles and one Big West Conference regular season title during Margaritis’ UC Riverside tenure, and he was named Big West Coach of the Year in 2007. During his time in the Inland Empire, Margaritis helped develop Kemie Nkele into a four-time FirstTeam All-Big West Conference award winner, twotime Big West Player of the Year and one-time Defensive Player of the Year. Nkele and former Highlanders Seyram Gbewonyo and Katerina Glyniadaki continued their basketball careers at the professional level playing in Greece. In 2004-05 Margaritis was hired as just the seventh women’s basketball head coach in UCR history and just the second at the Division I level. He inherited a team that was 7-21 the year prior to his hiring and led them to a 16-13 record, the program’s first winning season since 2001-02. One year later, Margaritis and the Highlanders stunned 10-time defending champion UC Santa Barbara 59-58 in the Big West Conference Tournament Championship game punching their first-ever ticket to the Big Dance since transitioning to NCAA Division I. The 2006-07 season saw the Highlanders run off a 12-2 mark in conference play to claim the programs first regular season title. Margaritis was named Big West Coach of the Year as UCR again defeated UCSB in the championship game to earn their second consecutive trip to the NCAAs. The Highlanders made it five trips to the postseason in six years as Margaritis led the 2008-09 squad to the first round of the WNIT—another program first for the blue and gold—the 2009-10 squad to an upset of top-seeded UC Davis in the conference championship game, and a 2010-11 WNIT at-large selection. Prior to joining UC Riverside, Margaritis spent eight years at Northern Arizona, where he served as the Lumberjacks’ associate head coach from 2001-04. He also was an assistant coach at the University of Nevada in the mid-1980s. From 1989-93 Margaritis spent time as an assistant under legendary head coach Bob Spencer at Fresno State.

Game Notes Vol. 14, No. 8

Margaritis is no stranger to the Inland Empire, however, having spent 199397 at Cal State San Bernardino. After two years as the Coyotes’ assistant, Margaritis was named interim head coach for the 1995-96 season. He started his coaching career at Northeastern Illinois University, where he led the NAIA program to a record of 83-53 in his four years there. Margaritis moved on to coach one season at National-Louis University in Illinois. He holds a degree in secondary physical education from Northeastern Illinois, and has two sons, Peter and Chris.

GAME NOTES

2014-15 UCR Women’s Basketball OFF TO THE RACES UC Riverside won its first five games of the season, which was the first time the program had started a year 5-0 since the 198687 campaign when they won seven straight to open the year. A 73-61 loss at Fresno ended the Highlanders streak this season.

SETTING GOALS Brittany Crain should move into the Highlanders’ career top 10 lists for field goals made and attempted later this season, and she already ranks in the top 10 for three-point field goals made and attempted.

KING OF THE HILL With the Highlanders 66-53 win over San Francisco on November 22, Head Coach John Margaritis moved past Nancy Simpson (1978-90) into sole possession of first place on UC Riverside’s career coaching victories chart with 147. He now has 149 in his UCR career.

GAME NOTES

2014-15 UCR Women’s Basketball HANDLES When you handle the ball as much as Brittany Crain does, you can be excused if you also commit a few turnovers. The career NBA turnovers leader board is, after all, littered with names like Karl Malone (1st), John Stockton (3rd), Jason Kidd (4th). Dr. J (5th) and Kobe Bryant (7th). Crain is bucking that trend, however, as she has just 13 turnovers on the year. Here is a look at the Big West’s top 10 scoring leaders and their turnover totals this season. Player Brittany Crain Chante Miles Sydnee Fipps Janae Sharpe Ashlee Guay Simone DeCoud Ariana Elegado Shawna-Lei Kuehe Alyson Doherty Cinnamon Lister

That’s a ratio of 5.38 field goals for every turnover for Crain. The next best ratio on the list belongs to Cinnamon Lister at 3.64 field goals per turnover. POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Brittany Crain led the Big West in scoring last season averaging 19.2 ppg. This year, the junior guard is right back at the top of the charts leading the conference with 24.6 ppg. Teammate Simone DeCoud is tied for fifth in the conference in scoring at 14.4 points per game. The Highlanders have had five players average 20 or more points in a season in the history of the program, but never had teammates accomplish the feat in the same year. GONE STREAKING Brittany Crain scored in double-figures in 26 straight games (16 last season and 10 the year before) to set a new program, Division I era mark. Her streak came to end at Cal Poly on January 25, 2014, as the sophomore scored just nine points. She has an active streak of 17 straight games dating back to last season. Additionally, Crain scored in double-figures in each of her first nine games as a member of the Highlanders two years ago—the only freshman in UCR’s Division I history to accomplish such a feat. 30 FOR 30 Brittany Crain has three 30-plus point games this season and six in her career, both of which are UC Riverside Division I era records. INTERSTATE 10 Each of the Highlanders six wins last season came by 10 or more points for an average margin of victory of 15.3 points. Four of UC Riverside’s five wins this season have been by 10 points or more, and the team’s average margin of victory is 6.7.

I AM NOT A CROOK Brittany Crain poured in a career-high 37 points at Santa Clara on Nov. 17, 2013, the most points scored by a member of the Highlanders since Donna Hammond-Mares posted 38 against Cal State LA on Jan. 16, 1982.

C-NOTE The Highlanders scored 100 points in their victory over San Jose State on Nov. 22—the most points scored since a 105-point effort against those same Spartans last season. The 100 points scored is the eighth highest on UCR’s single-game charts, and second-highest in the program’s Division I history. THE BEST OFFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE UC Riverside is averaging a league-best 71.9 points per game so far this season which is the second most in the Big West. The Highlanders are also third in the conference in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage. APPLE TURNOVER The Highlanders are committing just 13.1 turnovers per game this season—lowest in the Big West.

Game Notes Vol. 14, No. 8

LICENSE TO DRIVE Brittany Crain went 16-of-20 from the foul line at Santa Clara on Nov. 17, 2013, recording a new program record for most made free throws in a single game while tying the attempt mark. Two seasons ago, Tre’Shonti Nottingham set what was then the record, making 15 free throws at CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 18, 2012. 20-20-20 VISION Natasha Hadley, Annelise Ito and Brittany Crain all scored 20 or more points in the Highlanders victory at San Jose State on Nov. 15, 2013, marking the first time in the school’s Division I history that such a feat was performed. HIGHLANDERS HARDWARE UC Riverside had two players earn all-conference accolades in 2013-14—Brittany Crain earned a first-team nod, while Simone DeCoud was named Big West Freshman of the Year and to the All-Freshman Team.
