JOHN MARGARITIS

Head Women’s Basketball Coach Head Coach John Margaritis has taken the Highlanders women’s basketball team to new heights in his nine seasons in Riverside. Margaritis continues to rewrite the UCR record books averaging 15.3 wins per season and making the postseason in five of eight years (three NCAA Tournament appearances and two WNIT appearances). The Highlanders have won three Big West Tournament titles and one Big West Conference regular season title during Margaritis’ UC Riverside tenure, and he was named Big West Coach of the Year in 2007. During his time in the Inland Empire, Margaritis helped develop Kemie Nkele into a four-time FirstTeam All-Big West Conference award winner, twotime Big West Player of the Year and one-time Defensive Player of the Year. Nkele and former Highlanders Seyram Gbewonyo and Katerina Glyniadaki continued their basketball careers at the professional level playing in Greece. In 2004-05 Margaritis was hired as just the seventh women’s basketball head coach in UCR history and just the second at the Division I level. He inherited a team that was 7-21 the year prior to his hiring and led them to a 16-13 record, the program’s first winning season since 2001-02. One year later, Margaritis and the Highlanders stunned 10-time defending champion UC Santa Barbara 59-58 in the Big West Conference Tournament Championship game punching their first-ever ticket to the Big Dance since transitioning to NCAA Division I. The 2006-07 season saw the Highlanders run off a 12-2 mark in conference play to claim the programs first regular season title. Margaritis was named Big West Coach of the Year as UCR again defeated UCSB in the championship game to earn their second consecutive trip to the NCAAs. The Highlanders made it five trips to the postseason in six years as Margaritis led the 2008-09 squad to the first round of the WNIT—another program first for the blue and gold—the 2009-10 squad to an upset of top-seeded UC Davis in the conference championship game, and a 2010-11 WNIT at-large selection. Prior to joining UC Riverside, Margaritis spent eight years at Northern Arizona, where he served as the Lumberjacks’ associate head coach from 2001-04. He also was an assistant coach at the University of Nevada in the mid-1980s. From 1989-93 Margaritis spent time as an assistant under legendary head coach Bob Spencer at Fresno State.

Game Notes Vol. 13, No. 3

Margaritis is no stranger to the Inland Empire, however, having spent 199397 at Cal State San Bernardino. After two years as the Coyotes’ assistant, Margaritis was named interim head coach for the 1995-96 season. He started his coaching career at Northeastern Illinois University, where he led the NAIA program to a record of 83-53 in his four years there. Margaritis moved on to coach one season at National-Louis University in Illinois. He holds a degree in secondary physical education from Northeastern Illinois, and has two sons, Peter and Chris.

GAME NOTES

2013-14 UCR Women’s Basketball MOLON LABE UC Riverside scored a program, Division I era record of 105 points in its 31-point victory at San Jose State on Nov. 15. It is the most points scored in a win for the Highlanders since erupting for 106 on Dec. 4, 1993 against Cal State Stanislaus.

WHO DOESN’T LOVE FREE STUFF? UC Riverside shot 74.4 percent from the free throw line last season which was second in the Big West and 37th in the nation. It is also the second-highest percentage in a single-season for a UCR team in the program’s history.

Additionally, UCR’s 42 made field goals in that game rank second all-time in school history behind 50 made at Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 14, 1985.

UCR Free Throw Percentage, Single-Season 78.5 % 2003-04 74.4 % 2012-13 74.1 % 2004-05

CAREER HIGH Brittany Crain poured in a career-high 37 points at Santa Clara on Nov. 17, the most points scored by a member of the Highlanders since Donna Hammond-Mares posted 38 against Cal State LA on Jan. 16, 1982. CHARITY STRIPERS The Highlanders connected on 37 free throws at Santa Clara on Nov. 17, tying the second-best mark in program history. The squad hit 40 against Cal State LA on Feb. 19, 1999 for the top spot on the charts. CHARITY STRIPERS II Brittany Crain went 16-of-20 from the foul line at Santa Clara on Nov. 17, recording a new program record for most made free throws in a single game while tying the attempt mark. Last season, Tre’Shonti Nottingham set what was then the record making 15 free throws at CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 18, 2012. 20-20-20 VISION Natasha Hadley, Annelise Ito and Brittany Crain all scored 20 or more points in the Highlanders victory at San Jose State on Nov. 15, marking the first time in the school’s Division I history that such a feat was performed. EYE ON 1,000 POINT CLUB Senior Natasha Hadley is looking to become the 15th member of the Highlanders 1,000 point club as she currently has 788 points. GIVE ME AN ‘O’, GIVE ME A ‘T’ UCR defeated Santa Clara 90-80 in overtime on Nov. 17, the team’s first OT victory since a 94-90 win over Utah State on Nov. 15, 2012. Head Coach John Margaritis is currently 8-5 in overtime games in his 10 seasons with the Highlanders. SUPERCENTENARIAN UC Riverside scored 105 points at San Jose State on Nov. 15 after combining for 110 points in its first two games of the season. 31 FLAVORS The Highlanders 31-point victory over San Jose State on Nov. 15 is the team’s largest margin of victory since they defeated UC Santa Barbara by 33 points on Jan. 15, 2011. FEELING A LITTLE RANK The Highlanders faced stiff competition to open the 2013-14 season, battling two teams that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago—Iowa and Dayton. Additionally, Dayton was ranked 14th in the nation at that time, marking the first ranked team UCR has faced since #18 Oklahoma on December 20, 2012.

Game Notes Vol. 13, No. 3

Additionally, graduated senior Tre’Shonti Nottingham ranked 17th in the nation in free-throw percentage in 2012-13, hitting 87.7 percent of her attempts. After hitting just 68.6 percent from the foul line in their first two games this season, the Highlanders are now hitting a league-best 76.2. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE The Highlanders won just five games in 2011-12, but won 11 in 2012-13. ROAD RAGE UC Riverside boasted a 7-6 road record last season but was just 4-12 at home. Those seven road victories tie the Division I program record for most road wins, and are tied for the secondmost road wins in the history of the program. FRESH MEAT Brittany Crain averaged 14.3 points per game last season—the third-highest average for a freshman in the nation. She currently paces the squad with 23.0 ppg this year. WRONG WAY STREAK The Highlanders ended 2012-13 on an eight-game losing streak, the longest since the 2011-12 squad dropped nine consecutive. FLYERS AND MUSTANGS #14 Dayton earned a 35-point victory over UC Riverside on November 9, the biggest loss since Washington State handed UCR a 39-point defeat on Dec. 22, 2011. Last season, Cal Poly defeated the Highlanders by 35 points on Feb. 28 by the score of 94-59. That loss is the greatest in Big West Conference play since Long Beach State defeated UC Riverside by 39 points on Feb. 10, 2005. The 94 points scored by the Mustangs that game is the most points allowed by an opponent since Eastern Washington scored 96 on Dec. 16, 2003—and the most ever by a Big West Conference opponent in UCR’s Division I history. The 94 points are also the fourth-highest ever an opponent has scored since the 2001-02 season. Most Points Allowed, UCR DI 99 Weber State 96 Eastern Washington 95 Arizona 94 Cal Poly

GAME NOTES

2013-14 UCR Women’s Basketball PLAYER OF THE WEEK Brittany Crain was named Big West Player of the Week on Nov. 18 after averaging 30.0 points in UCR’s wins at San Jose St. and Santa Clara. She is the first member of the Highlanders to earn POW honors since Tre’Shonti Nottingham on Nov. 19, 2012. LOW TODAY OF 42 The Highlanders scored 42 points in their loss to UC Santa Barbara on March 2, 2013—the fewest points scored since a 39point game against UC Davis on Mar. 11, 2011. TEENAGE YEARS UC Riverside scored just 13 points in the first half against Cal Poly on Feb. 28, 2013, the second-fewest points scored in a half in the program’s Division I history. The Highlanders scored 12 points in the first half against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 16, 2012. MORE POTASSIUM IN YOUR DIET UCR’s 19-point victory over Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 9, 2013 is the largest win in conference play since a 29-point win against Cal State Northridge on February 3, 2011. XLV The Highlanders defeated UC Santa Barbara 45-42 on January 31, 2013, the fewest points in a win for UCR in its Division I history. THE ONEDERS UC Riverside snapped a three-game losing streak with a 50-49 victory at Long Beach State on Jan. 17, 2013, the team’s first one-point win since December 18, 2006 (70-69 at Utah Valley State). The next game, UCR defeated UC Irvine by one point, 68-67, marking the first back-to-back one-point wins in the program’s Division I history. SCORING WOES The Highlanders averaged 68.9 points per game heading into league play last season, but averaged 55.1 ppg in Big West play. STRUGGLES AT HOME The Highlanders nine losses at home in Big West play last season marks the first time in the program’s Division I history that UCR has gone without a home win in conference games. LOW OF 37 The 37 points scored by Louisiana on Dec. 17, 2012 are the fewest UCR has allowed an opponent to score since Montana had just 34 on Nov. 12, 2010. D-FENCE UCR held Long Beach State to 24.6 percent from the field on January 17, 2013, the lowest an opponent has shot since Lafayette hit just 24.1 percent on November 22, 2008. WHOOP WHOOP Brittany Crain scored in double-figures in each of her first nine games as a member of the Highlanders last year—the only freshman in UCR’s Division I history to accomplish such a feat.

gohighlanders.com

THE AVENGERS UC Riverside avenged a 39-point loss against Washington State from two years ago with a six-point victory on November 28, 2012. The two teams will tangle again this year on Dec. 18. KEYS TO SUCCESS In UCR’s five wins in 2011-12, the team averaged 72.0 points compared to 64.4 for the bad guys. In losses, however, UC Riverside averaged just 51.6 ppg compared to 67.5 for the opposition. Last season, the Highlanders averaged 55.3 points per game in losses and 68.5 points in wins. The trend is continuing this year as UCR averages 55.0 points in losses but 97.5 in victories. LONG DISTANCE PROBLEMS John Margaritis’ teams are known for shooting the long ball, averaging between 13 and 18 attempts per game in his first seven seasons. Two years ago, however, the team attempted 9.6 three-pointers a game. In 2012-13, UCR reversed that trend and averaged 13.4 three-pointers a game, and this year, the team is attempting 13.0 long balls. STREAKING The Highlanders posted a three-game winning streak from Nov. 12-18, 2012— the longest since they went on a six-game tear from Feb. 19-Mar. 8, 2011. SUMMER OF 69 UC Riverside is golden when scoring 69 or more points in a game, boasting a record of 25-0 when hitting that mark over the last three seasons. ROAD TRIP UCR played 13 non-conference games in 2011-12 with 10 of them on the road, including eight of its first 10 to start the season. Last year, that trend reversed as the Highlanders had 11 non-conference games with seven of them at home. The flip flop is back again for 2013-14 as UCR plays 13 non-conference games with 11 of them away from the SRC Arena. DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS With 11 league victories in 2010-11, the Highlanders were the only team in the Big West to post double-digit conference wins in all five seasons from 2006-07 to 2010-11. That streak came to an end in 2011-12, as the team won just three games in Big West play. UCR had just four league wins last season, marking the second year in a row the Highlanders have failed to reach double-figure wins in conference play. HIGHLANDERS HARDWARE UC Riverside had two players earn all-conference accolades in 2012-13—Tre’Shonti Nottingham earned a second-team nod, while Brittany Crain was named Big West Freshman of the Year and to the Honorable Mention Team and the All-Freshman Team. THE WILLIAMS SISTERS Contrary to popular belief, UCR players Jamila Williams and Jazzmeen Williams are not related.
