Ash Wednesday Brunch a Blessing to All UMW President Melissa Peirce welcomed 115 women to the Ash Wednesday brunch on Wednesday, February 14th this year. It was a wonderful way to begin the Lenten journey. Special thanks to Hollie Kotwicki and the Executive Board for preparing the food and lovely tables.

Fulfilling our Vision

The UMW’s Vision is “Turning faith, hope and love into action on behalf of women, children and youth around the world”. The Rachel Circle meeting in March was a action oriented meeting—filled with a lot of fun and fellowship! They donated items and then assembled 10 Easter baskets for the girls living in foster care at the House of Providence in Detroit. The House of Providence has been supported by our UMW Unit and has a 87% success rate in finding permanent homes for the girls they take in to their program. It is, in large part, due to their faith based approach, personalized care and mentoring of these young girls and teens. So—returning to the importance of our Rummage Sale—this is how the women of the First Churches— Birmingham and Berkley—support the needs of women and children in our community, state, nation and world. THANK YOU!

During a fireside chat at Kathy Dalton's home on March 27th Sarah's Circle learned more about the Methodist Children's Home Society from Child Development Officer, Kathryn Woodstock. For over 100 years MCH has inspired hope and transformed the lives of children who have experienced the trauma of child abuse and neglect. The current 72-acre campus located in Redford, Michigan houses 70 boys between the ages of 5 and 18 years of age. Each boy has been rejected by their biological family and MCH offers them a loving environment with supportive therapy. Every boy has his own room in a cottage which

functions as a family unit. Daily meals are shared and a trusted staff member looks after them providing encouragement, guidance and support. Sarah's Circle member Beverly Hannett Price asked Kathryn what is the boys' greatest challenge? Kathryn answered "trust" elaborating that each child at a young age has experienced far too many horrible things. Kathryn thanked UMW for financially supporting MCH with funds to expand MCH's foster care and adoption spaces; two other important components of their mission. MCH works hard to find "forever families" for its children and currently seeks loving families who would like to adopt a boy or girl. Kathryn commended the Birmingham First members, Beth and Eric Torrey who became licensed foster parents and recently adopted their daughter, Josephine Reina Torrey. During a phone interview Eric told me he and Beth were very aware of how many kids need help and MCH has to turn many away. The waiting list for the cottages is currently over 200 children from all over Michigan. Eric said their new experience being a "forever family" for Josephine is really rewarding and he hopes other parents will sign up and be foster parents too. If you are interested in finding out more about MCH and what they do you are invited to their upcoming Annual Dinner which is a free of charge on Thursday, April 19th at The Henry in Dearborn beginning at 6 p.m. To join MCH in celebrating safer and brighter futures for Michigan children and families, RSVP to Kristain at (313)531-9973 or email [email protected] Contributed by Melissa Peirce
