Utah Baseball Heads South to Face BYU

The Utah baseball team plays its second game of the season against BYU on Tuesday, May 9, before continuing Pac-12 play this weekend against USC. Tuesday’s game against BYU begins at 6:00 p.m. and will be aired on BYUtv with radio at ESPN 700. It is the second game Utah and BYU will play on the diamond this season. BYU won game one of the series, 11-6, back on March 28. A third scheduled game of the series was rained out on April 18. The series is worth three total points towards the Deseret First Dual rivalry series, now in its 10th season. Utah clinched the overall victory, 26-6, with wins in football, volleyball, women’s basketball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s tennis, with just baseball remaining. If the teams split the two games, the winner will be determined on run differential. For the Utes, freshman Chase Bauerle is slated to make his first career start on the mound. Utah (20-21, 9-12 Pac-12) ranks third in the Pac-12 with a .289 batting average. The Utes are second in the league in runs scored (256), RBI (230) and on-base percentage (.377) while ranking third in hits (417). The Utes rank sixth in the Pac-12 in earned run average (4.00). Utah leads the league in fewest home runs allowed (12) and pickoffs (11, tied). Dallas Carroll and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., are two of the best hitters in the league. The two are tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with 62 hits each. Carroll is third in the Pac-12 in batting average (.383) and second in on-base percentage (.469) and slugging percentage (.586). Keirsey is tied for second in the conference in triples (five) and tied for eighth in runs scored (37). Jayson Rose is sixth in the Pac-12 with 67 strikeouts and is tied for fifth in the league with six wins. He recently set the Utah career record for strikeouts (241). BYU is 29-14 on the season and 17-4 in the West Coast Conference. The Cougars are ranked 18th in the Collegiate Baseball poll and on a nine-game winning streak. Utah’s series against USC begins on Saturday, May 13, at 11:30 a.m. MT.

Infield

• At third base, senior Dallas Carroll ranks in the top five in the league in multiple categories. He is third in batting average (.383) and second in on-base percentage (.469) and slugging percentage (.586). Carroll is tied for third in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.51) and and is tied for fifth in total hits (62) and also ranks fifth in RBI (41). In addition, he is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 in doubles (14), ranks sixth in total bases (95), is tied for eighth in walks (26) and stolen bases (8-of-10) and is tied for 10th in runs scored (35). Carroll is the seventh-toughest player in the league to strike out (once every 9.5 at-bats). He is tied for second no the team with two triples. He leads Utah with 10 multiple-RBI games and is tied for the team lead with 20 multiple-hit games. Carroll is hitting .420 (21-of-50) with runners in scoring position. • Carroll went 4-for-10 (.400) with three walks and four runs scored against UC Riverside. He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game three of the series and is on a four-game hitting streak. • Carroll is in his fourth season starting at third base (177 starts) and also has a redshirt year under his belt. He was a 2016 All-Pac-12 player and has a .311 career batting average. • Senior Hunter Simmons, who has started every game at first base, is hitting .325 (third on the team) and is second on the team with 30 RBI. He is also third on the team with 25 walks and a .411 on-base percentage. Simmons is tied for second on the team with three home runs. He is 2-for-4 in stolen bases, has a .413 slugging percentage and five doubles with 25 runs scored. Simmons’ seven multiple RBI games is third on the team. • Simmons went 3-for-4 in the first game against BYU. • Simmons is on a 10-game hitting streak and has had a hit in 12 of Utah’s last 13 games. He hit .500 (6-of-12) against UC Riverside. Simmons was 3-for-4 in game two of the series. • Simmons earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Feb. 27 after hitting .569 (9-for-16) with six RBI against Nebraska and Ohio State. • Simmons has 156 starts (173 games) over four seasons. • Freshman Oliver Dunn has started all but two games at second base. He is hitting .242 with 19 RBI, 17 walks, five doubles and a triple. He has scored 28 runs (third on the team) and has two stolen bases.

2017 Utah Baseball • Senior Ellis Kelly has started in 25 games at shortstop, including the last 20 games. He has a .310 batting average and .400 slugging percentage. Kelly has five doubles, two triples (tied for second on the team), 17 RBI, one stolen base and has scored 17 runs. He is 4-of6 with the bases loaded. He has made just one error in 106 chances. • Kelly went 3-for-5 in game one against BYU. • Kelly drove in two runs in game one against UC Riverside. • Kelly, a JC transfer, has started 47 games at short over the last two seasons. • Junior Kyle Hoffman, who has started 13 games at short and one game at second (20 games total), is hitting .222 with three doubles, a triple, four RBI and 12 runs scored. He has a .364 on-base percentage. • Hoffman, in his third season at Utah, has played in 45 games with 23 career starts. • Utility player junior Wade Gulden has started 28 games at designated hitter with appearances in 36 games. He is hitting .236 with three home runs (tied for second on the team), two doubles, 15 RBI, 16 walks, 18 runs scored and a stolen base. • Gulden hit a two-run pinch-hit home run in the first game against BYU. • Gulden drove in two runs in game two against UC Riverside. • Gulden has played in 99 games in his threeyear career with 59 starts between the infield, outfield and DH. • Utility redshirt freshman Connor McNally has played in 18 games with two starts (one at DH, one at 2B). Outfield

• Sophomore DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., in center has started every game in the outfield while Josh Rose has started all but one game. Sophomore Chandler Anderson and freshman Dominic Foscalina have both started in left field. • Keirsey is tied for third in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.51) and tied for fifth in total hits (62). He is tied for second in the league with five triples and is tied for fourth with nine stolen bases (9-of-14). Keirsey is tied for eighth in the league in runs scored (37) and is ninth in total bases (89). He ranks second on the team with a .339 batting average and .486 slugging percentage and is third with a .402 on-base percentage. Keirsey is tied for second on the team with three home runs and ranks third with 28 RBI and eight doubles. Keirsey also has 17 walks. He is tied for the team lead with 20 multiple-hit games. • Keirsey was 3-for-6 in game one against BYU. • Keirsey was All-Pac-12, a Freshman All-American and member of the Pac-12 All-Defensive team last season. • Rose is hitting .216. He is tied for fifth in the league in walks (27) and has a .355 on-base percentage. Rose is second on the team with 10 doubles. Catcher

• Sophomore Zack Moeller has played in 39 games with 36 starts at catcher (plus one at DH). He is hitting .278 on the year and is tied for second on the team with three home runs. Moeller has a .414 slugging percentage (third on the team), 21 RBI, 23 runs scored, seven doubles and a triple. He is tied for the league lead in times hit by pitch (11). Moeller has been involved in three pickoffs, which is tied for second in the conference, and has caught nine runners stealing (fourth in the league). • Moeller is on a 13-game reached base streak and has had a hit in 11 of Utah’s last 12 games. He hit .500 (6-of-12) against UC Riverside, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in game three of the series. • Moeller started part time last year at catcher and has started 54 games over the last two years (one at DH). • Freshman Alex Isola has played in nine games with five starts at catcher. He is hitting .222 with four RBI and a double. • Senior Max Schuman has played in 17 games with four starts at designated hitter. He has one relief appearance at catcher. Pitchers

• Junior Jayson Rose leads Utah and is sixth in the Pac-12 with 67 strikeouts. He is tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in wins (6-2) with a 3.62 ERA and has thrown 74 2/3 innings (eighth in the Pac-12). • Rose earned the win in game one against UC Riverside, allowing three runs on five hits with a season-high nine strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings pitched. • Rose, a 2016 All-Pac-12 pick, holds the Utah career record for strikeouts (241) and the single-season record for strikeouts (106, 2016).

2017 Utah Baseball • Sophomore Riley Ottesen is 4-3 with a 4.54 ERA and 53 strikeouts (tied for 10th in the Pac12).
