Utah Baseball Plays In State at BYU
The Utah baseball team plays its first game in Utah this season in Provo at BYU on Tuesday, March 20, at 6:00 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on BYUTV. The contest is the first of four that the Utes and Cougars will play this season. Utah hosts BYU on Tuesday, April 3, and Tuesday, May 8, and the teams play a second game in Provo on Tuesday, April 24. The overall winner of the four contests will earn three points towards the Deseret First Duel rivalry series. Utah leads 15.5-10.5 with men’s and women’s tennis, softball and baseball remaining for 12 total points. Utah has scored points this year in football, women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and women’s soccer. Utah (2-16) is tied for the Pac-12 lead in stolen bases (20) and ranks sixth in the league in hits (151). Ute pitchers lead the league with six pickoffs and are tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in strikeouts (144). The Utes rank third in the league in fielding percentage (.979). Tanner Thomas is tied for the Pac-12 lead with 32 strikeouts and ranks sixth in the league in strikeout to walk ratio (5.33). Brett Brocoff is tied for eighth in the league with 28 strikeouts. Chandler Anderson and Oliver Dunn are tied for third in the Pac-12 with five stolen bases each. Anderson is tied for third in the league in doubles (7) while Dunn is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 with 15 walks. Wade Gulden is tied for third in the league with two triples. BYU is 9-9 overall and 0-3 in the West Coast Conference. The Cougars have dropped three straight games after being swept over the weekend by Loyola Marymount.
Infield
· Sophomore Oliver Dunn is in his second year starting at second base. He is hitting .242 and is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 in walks (15), tied for third in the league with five stolen bases (5-of-6) and has a .386 on-base percentage. Dunn is tied for second on the team with six multiple-hit games and is tied for the team lead with eight runs scored. He is tied for second on the team with six RBI and has one double and one home run. · Dunn has a .248 career batting average (69 career games). · Senior Wade Gulden has started 17 games at first base. He is hitting .203 with a team-leading two triples (tied for third in the Pac-12), two doubles and five RBI.
· Gulden has played in 126 career games with 85 starts between the infield, outfield and designated hitter. He has a .238 career batting average. · At third base, Ryker Tom is hitting .261 and leads the team with 18 hits. He is tied for second on the team with six RBI. Tom also has four doubles and has scored seven runs. He is tied for second on the team with six multiplehit games and had a team-long nine-game hitting streak from Feb. 18-March 5. · Tom went 2-for-4 with two doubles in game two against USC. · Tom transferred from San Diego and redshirted before beginning his freshman season at Utah. · Freshman Matt Richardson started 12 games at shortstop and is second on the team with a .350 batting average. He leads the team with a .422 on-base percentage and has a .450 slugging percentage. Richardson has two doubles, a triple, five runs and three stolen bases (3-for-4). · Richardson hit .333 (2-of-6) against USC last weekend with at least one hit in each game and had two stolen bases. · Redshirt freshman Davis Delorefice has a .250 batting average and has scored seven runs. He has two doubles and four RBI. Delorefice has started 14 games total, including seven in the infield, four in right field and three at designated hitter. · Redshirt freshman Braden DeBenedictis has started five games at designated hitter (seven total games) and made one appearance as a sub at first base. He is hitting .250 on the year. DeBenedictis recently went 2-for-3 in game three against USC. · Freshman Shea Kramer has started at first, designated hitter, right field and catcher over 10 games (eight total starts). He is hitting .188. Kramer has five RBI, three runs scored, a home run and a double on the year. · Freshman Demitri Colacchio has started two games at designated hitter (five games total) and is hitting .125 in eighth at-bats. · Junior Isaac Cruz has made three appearances, with his first start at DH in game one against USC. He is 1-for-1 with the bases loaded this year and is hitting .200 (1-of-5) on the season with two RBI.

2018 Utah Baseball Outfield
· Junior DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., leads the Utes with a .354 batting average. He is tied for second on the team with 17 hits, second with five doubles and is tied for third with seven runs scored. He is second on the team with a .458 slugging percentage and has five RBI and three stolen bases (3-of-5). Keirsey has five multiplehit games and is 6-of-11 (.545) with runners in scoring position. He has started nine games in the outfield and two at designated hitter. Keirsey is currently on a five-game hitting streak. · A two-time All-Pac-12 player, Keirsey has a .315 career batting average. · Junior Chandler Anderson has started every game in left field and is hitting .213 on the year. He is tied for third in the Pac-12 in both doubles (7) and stolen bases (5-of-5). Anderson is tied for the team lead with eight runs scored. Anderson had hits in two of three games against USC. · Anderson has 59 career starts (94 games) with a .279 career batting average. · Sophomore Dominic Foscalina has started in both center and left field (15 total starts). He is hitting .298 and leads Utah with a .491 slugging percentage, nine RBI and three home runs. Foscalina has two doubles, has scored five runs and has two stolen bases (2-of-4). Foscalina is hitting 8-of-17 (.471) with two outs and leads the team with seven mutiple-hit games and two multiple-RBI games. · Foscalina led Utah last weekend against USC with a .364 batting average (4-of-11) which included a home run. · Foscalina has played in 45 career games with 35 starts and has a .309 career batting average. · Junior Erick Migueles has started six games in right field and four games at designated hitter with appearances in 14 games. He is hitting .135 with one home run and four RBI with a stolen base. · Migueles is a transfer from Pima Community College.
Catcher
· Freshman Christopher Rowan, Jr., has started 14 games at catcher and is tied for third in the Pac-12 with five runners caught stealing. Rowan is hitting .200 with two RBI and one double. · Freshman Shea Kramer has also started four games at catcher (see under ‘infield’ for more).
Pitchers
· Sophomore Jacob Rebar makes his first start this season against BYU. He has made five appearances (12 innings) and has a 3.75 ERA with eight strikeouts. He is tied for third in the Pac12 with two pickoffs. Rebar recently pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in game two against USC. · Rebar has pitched in 22 career games (four starts) with a 5.26 ERA and a 3-5 record. · Junior Josh Tedeschi has pitched in five games with one start (24 innings) and regularly pitches in long relief. He has a 4.88 ERA and is third on the team with 25 strikeouts. · Tedeschi had a strong outing in a start against USC last week, allowing two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
· Tedeschi has 33 career appearances with a 5.21 ERA and 2-4 record. · Senior Tanner Thomas is tied for the Pac-12 lead with 32 strikeouts and ranks sixth in the league in strikeout to walk ratio (5.33). He has a 3.38 ERA over a team-leading 29 1/3 innings with a 1-2 record and has surrendered just six walks. ·Thomas recently pitched seven shutout innings against USC, allowing two hits with five strikeouts. · Thomas has pitched in 49 games (eight starts) with a 4.17 career ERA and 95 strikeouts. · Freshman Brett Brocoff, Utah’s Sunday starter, is second on the team and tied for eighth in the Pac-12 with 28 strikeouts. He has a 3.70 ERA (third on the team) with a 1-3 record over 24 1/3 innings pitched (second on the team). Brocoff has allowed just three extra-base hits. · Brocoff was named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Player of the Week against Oral Roberts when he tied the school record with 12 strikeouts. · Brocoff was a 28th-round selection in the MLB Draft out of high school to the Atlanta Braves. · Junior Kyle Robeniol has started four games and has a 4.08 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings pitched with an 0-2 record. He has been Utah’s Friday starter but did not pitch against USC. · Robeniol earned All-So-Cal and all-conference honors at Orange Coast College in 2017 after transferring from Oregon. · Senior Trenton Stoltz leads Utah with 11 appearances (8 1/3 total innings), all less than two innings. He has a 7.56 ERA and six strikeouts with one save. · Stoltz has made 64 relief appearances and has a career 4.66 ERA with a 1-2 record and two saves. · Sophomore Spencer Kevin Johnson has made six appearances (11 innings) and leads Utah with a 1.64 ERA. He has 12 strikeouts. He recently pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings with a career-high six strikeouts against UC Riverside. · Kevin Johnson has pitched in 10 games at Utah and has a 3.18 career ERA. · Senior Josh Lapiana has made five appearances with two mid-week starts (10 total innings). He has a 11.70 ERA and 0-2 record with six strikeouts. · Lapiana has been Utah’s Sunday starter in previous years.
