The No. 8 Wisconsin wrestling team (14-4-1 overall, 5-3-0 Big Ten) heads to the 2008 Big Ten Championships this weekend. This year’s meet will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., at Williams Arena. Competition begins with session one on Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m. Session two will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday and on Sunday, session three picks up again at noon. The Big Ten Network will broadcast live on Sunday from Minneapolis. It will be Wisconsin’s second appearance on the Big Ten Network this year and its third time this season in front of a nationally televised audience. UWBadgers.com will also be blogging live both days from the championships.

WISCONSIN’S HISTORY AT THE BIG TENS The Badgers placed the highest of any UW team under head coach Barry Davis at the 2007 Big Tens. Wisconsin finished second, its highest finish since 1992 when the team also finished runner-up. At the 2007 championships, Wisconsin scored 100.5 points for second place. Minnesota won the championship by scoring 156.0 points. Nine Badgers placed last year and the team was led by a second place finish from Kyle Ruschell at 141 lbs. Ruschell was seeded fifth and upset the top-seeded and fourth-seeded wrestlers to earn a spot in the finals. Ruschell met Northwestern’s Ryan Lang in the finals and fell 5-1. Craig Henning and Dallas Herbst both finished third at 157 lbs. and 197 lbs., respectively. Henning also upset top-seeded Mike Poeta from Illinois in the third place bout. Herbst stormed through the championships as a fifth-seed by pinning two opponents and winning four-straight to end the tournament. He lost in the second round to J.D. Bergman, who is now wrestling at heavyweight for Ohio State, but upset the third and top-seeded wrestlers to finish third. Trevor Brandvold finished fourth at 184 lbs. while Collin Cudd and Kyle Massey both placed fifth at 125 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively. Matt Maciag had a sixth place finish at 174 lbs. and Zach Tanelli finished eighth at 133 lbs. Wisconsin has never won the team title at the Big Ten Championships but have won 63 individual titles since 1914. The Badgers’ last Big Ten Champion was Tom Clum who won at 133 lbs. in 2006. Clum was a two-time champion as he also won at 125 lbs. in 2004. Iowa has won a Big Ten best 31 championships. Illinois comes in second with 17 Big Ten titles. Minnesota has 10 titles, two of which came in the last two seasons.

UW NEWS AND NOTES The Badgers are one of the hottest teams heading into the conference championships. Wisconsin won its last three to close out the regular season and all three wins were over top-10 opponents. Also, in all three matches, the Badgers trailed by as many as six points and came from behind to win. Wisconsin finished in a four-way tie for third place in the Big Ten regular season standings. For the second straight year the Badgers finished 5-3 in the conference. Minnesota, Illinois and Penn State also finished 5-3. The Badgers take six ranked grapplers into the Big Ten Championships. Five of those six are ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes. Junior Kyle Massey has scored the winning points in the Badgers' last three wins of the season. The heavyweight, who is ranked No. 2 in the country, clinched the 20-18 win over then-No. 10 Michigan with a major decision win, helped knock off the defending NCAA Champions, Minnesota, 20-17 with a win over Ben Berhow and then upset the then-top-ranked wrestler in the country, Dustin Fox from Northwestern, to give Wisconsin its 14th win of the season. Massey is on an 11match winning streak and has not lost since Dec. 10, 2007. Junior Dallas Herbst (197 lbs.) is also in position to have a strong Big Ten tournament. For the second-straight season, Herbst led the Badgers in pins. He has 14 pins, which is tied for fourth-most in a season. He needs four more to tie his single season record (18) and to break Lee Kemp’s school record of 47 career falls. Herbst tied with Massey for the most wins on the team this season and he finished 25-3. Senior Craig Henning is a two-time All-American and will look to win his first Big Ten Championship at 157 lbs. Henning posted a strong 22-3 record this season. All three of his losses came against Big Ten foes. He lost twice to Illinois’ Mike Poeta and then once to Indiana’s Brandon Becker. Sophomore Kyle Ruschell takes a No. 6 ranking at 141 lbs into Big Tens. He finished the season 23-5 overall, 16-2 in duals, and at one point, was a perfect 150 in dual action. Ruschell recently upset Manuel Rivera from Minnesota, who was ranked No. 3 at the time, in his last regular season dual. Junior Zach Tanelli will compete at 133 lbs. and has had plenty of challenging matches heading into the championships. Five of Tanelli’s last seven opponents were ranked in the top 10. Tanelli went 2-3 against those ranked grapplers but did not lose by more than three points in the three losses. Three-time NCAA qualifier Collin Cudd will make his final Big Ten Championships appearance at 125 lbs. Seniors Jake Donar (165 lbs.) and Dan Clum (174 lbs.) will also wrestle in their final conference championships. Freshman Kendall Vogel will compete at 149 lbs and sophomore Trevor Brandvold rounds out the Wisconsin competitors at 184 lbs. Wisconsin was honored a school-record four times this season with the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week award. Herbst won the award twice, Tanelli once and Massey earned the final award of the season. It was the first time three different UW grapplers have been honored in one season.

HEAD COACH BARRY DAVIS

14TH SEASON

Barry Davis is in his 14th season at the helm of the Wisconsin wrestling program. His Badgers finished the dual season with a 14-4-1 overall mark and 5-3 in the Big Ten. This season, Davis recorded his 150th career win with an 18-15 victory over Oklahoma on Feb. 21. He became just the second UW coach to do so, joining George Martin who coached for 32 years and finished 182-163-12. This season also marked the seventh time Davis’s teams have won 10 or more duals and the fourth time within the last five seasons. Davis was installed as the 15th head coach in Wisconsin history on March 4, 1994, after serving as the program’s interim head coach for the 1993–94 season. In his 13 seasons leading the Badgers, Davis has firmly instilled his values of commitment, intensity, loyalty and energy on the UW program. During his tenure, Davis has coached six individuals to 10 Big Ten titles, including the latest, Tom Clum, who claimed the 133-pound championship at the 2006 tournament. This after Clum won the 2004 title at 125-pounds. Davis also coached Donny Pritzlaff (165 pounds, 1999, 2000, ’01), Keith Davison (190 pounds, 1994), Matt Hanutke (118 pounds, 1994), Eric Jetton (126 pounds, 1997, ’98) and Kevin Wilmot (167 pounds, 1997) to conference championships. Additionally, 16 of Davis’ wrestlers have earned All-America honors while two have claimed NCAA titles. Pritzlaff won back-to-back national championships in 2000 and 2001 and Jeff Walter won the 1996 heavyweight title. Fifty-seven wrestlers have qualified for the NCAA championships under Davis’ direction, including current Badgers Collin Cudd, Zach Tanelli, Kyle Ruschell, Matt Maciag, Jake Donar, Craig Henning, Dallas Herbst and Kyle Massey.
