~Today’s Scripture Reading~

John 13:12-17 (NKJV) So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

~WELCOME VISITORS~

FOOTWASHING: AN EXAMPLE OF GREATNESS THROUGH SERVICE

Maybe they forgot. Maybe each person assumed someone else would do it. Maybe they saw it as such an insignificant task that pride kept them from volunteering. For whatever reason, none of the disciples decided to serve on this occasion. Only one person was willing to wash the feet of those in attendance – Jesus. Our Lord used this opportunity to show his disciples that greatness is achieved by serving others. We are blessed at Pace with some great people who are willing to serve. It doesn’t matter the task. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small. Someone always gets the job done. Without mentioning names, I want to thank you for what you do in service to our Lord, our church, and our community. A huge “thank you” to our young people and parents that served our Pacesetters this morning. Some cooked pancakes or sausage on the griddle. Some got the coffee or juice for those being honored. Some helped set up; others helped clean up. Some got here early so everything was in order. Some carried plates that were full; others picked up plates that were empty. Whatever you did, it was appreciated. You generously gave your time and effort to honor those whose example has been an inspiration. Thanks also goes to those who were guests of our youth for the breakfast. We have a wonderful group of Pacesetters who have served in the past and continue to serve today. This group of folks has been pivotal in encouraging our youth and in showing them how Christians never retire. There is always work to be done, and our Pacesetters are there doing that work. Another group that needs some appreciation is the group that put together the snack packs last Wednesday after class. All ages were involved in the assembly line. Three hundred packs were put together in about fifteen minutes. It may not seem like much to put the various items in a plastic bag, but those children who receive them understand that someone cares. As a result, God is glorified. A final group that needs a “high five” is the group who works in the pantry on Thursday. On any given Thursday, I see these three guys boxing up food and distributing it to those who are in need. Each week they make up Blessing Bags and bring them to the storage box in the church lobby. They couldn’t do what they do if it wasn’t for you doing what you do. When supplies get low, the members of this congregation quickly bring what’s needed. If we put out the word that we’re low on grits, then boxes of grits are there at the next service. If we need potted meat or canned pasta, there is no doubt that we will be fully supplied very soon. A can of green beans or a container of fruit may not seem like much to you or me, but it’s a big deal to the person who is hungry and in need. These are examples of people who have served this past week. There are so many others who serve unselfishly in this congregation. Your work is noticed. Your efforts are appreciated. Your commitment makes a difference. The one who most appreciates the acts of service you perform is the Lord himself. He showed us that any act done to help others and to glorify God is truly a great work. In the love of the Lord, David
