~Scripture Reading~

Matthew 6:1 (ESV) Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

~WELCOME VISITORS~

We are striving to be Christ’s church here in Pace, seeking to glorify God in our community and around the world. We are glad you decided to join us while we worship together! We believe you will find our worship according to the New Testament. Please take time to fill out a visitor’s card located in back of pew.

Place the card in the collection plate as it passes.

DOING RIGHT – WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU GET

Depending on who is doing the writing, you may see the word spelled “theater” or “theatre.” According to the internet (so it must be true), “theater” is more of an American spelling, and “theatre” is British. Regardless, both have to do with actors portraying a character in some type of performance. In ancient Greek culture and sometimes in modern settings, an actor might use a mask to show this portrayal. The symbol of the theater is a two-faced mask. One side represents comedy, while the other represents tragedy. The transliterated Greek word for “actor” is “hypokrites.” In English, we would say “hypocrite.” This is not intended to speak badly of actors or those involved in theater, because their purpose is to play a role or to pretend to be someone else. The sad thing is when a so-called disciple plays a role and is two-faced. Jesus wants more from his followers than for someone to change masks when they leave the assembly on then Lord’s Day. Putting on Christ in baptism is more than putting on a mask. It is more than playing a character. Listen to Paul’s description of the change in his own life and of the change that ought to occur in each of ours. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 NKJV)

Church Pens

According to this verse, the old “me” ceases to exist, and aanew “me” begins. That new identity is Take a Pen...Give Pen Jesus living in me. I don’t put him on and take him off when situations and circumstances change. What a great way to invite someone to our church! I don’t put on my church mask at the building and then put on another mask at work, school, or home. Jesus is to remain constant in me. In no situation is it okay for me to revert to my old way of thinking and living. Matthew 6:1-18 continues the lesson Jesus has been teaching on genuine righteousness. He stresses in these verses that right living is not focused on pleasing other people, but that the proper motivation is God’s approval. God knows our hearts and knows why we do the things we do. It is not possible to fool him. We may fool those around us and make them think we are righteous, but God cannot be deceived. He knows us even better than we know ourselves. For many Christ-followers including myself on occasion, the issue is not a dramatic shift from one extreme to the other. The shift is subtle. It is a slight change in thought and behavior when we go from the church building on a Sunday to the office or classroom on a Monday. The change results from the failure to apply the lessons learned on Sunday to how we live the other days of the week. We get so busy taking care of our work/school/team duties that we forget the duties that matter most. Ironically, it’s when we focus on being God-pleasers that we become the best workers and students.

Let’s heed Jesus’ words and be genuine in faith and action every day. Let’s seek to please God in all situations. Let’s focus on the message given to us in Scripture by the Holy Spirit. Let’s drop the masks and always seek to be authentic disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the love of the Lord, David
