What would you take with you?
Closed Sep 7 Celebrating Winters Bike Week
July was quite exciting around here. Besides having Winters Bike Week (a very big deal!), there was the Wragg fire. It was the top story (in my household) for more than a week. As I write this the fire is still not quite out with 92% containment (8,000 acres). There was so much ash in the air on the first day we had to bring the yarn ball inside because it looked like it had dandruff (you won’t get such shocking, newsworthy info anywhere but here ). Luckily neither shop absorbed any of the campfire smell. The continued smokiness is not because of the Wragg fire, though, but because of the Rocky fire near Clearlake. It is currently 18,000 acres and only 5% contained. How do I know this stuff? During this past week I discovered a very helpful website: www.calfire.ca.gov. First, let me say that I’m so glad we paid our CAL FIRE bill. Not that they wouldn’t save our house if we hadn’t, I just feel Our very cute shop bike designed better knowing that we contribute a teensy amount to the incomprehensible costs and decorated by Diane Lis. of fighting fires throughout the state (my bill might have covered lunches for a couple of firefighters). If you have time, check out the website and look at the Google Statewide Fire Map. Currently it looks like most of California is on fire. Ugh! For the first time in nine years of living out in the country, we were under evacuation orders (which were downgraded to an evacuation advisory before we finished packing up so we didn’t end up having to leave). We had to decide in a fairly short amount of time what to take and what to leave. I was pretty sure our house was safe, but you never know. The fire had already jumped containment once and the winds were crazy. We packed three bins of pictures and important papers...and my sewing machine. (Paul’s table saw is just too big to fit in the Prius.) As we looked around the house and had to make quick decisions, it was pretty clear what was important and couldn’t be replaced. Every month...just for the fun of it! Batik Club (membership required) 1st Tues (Seriously, my Pfaff 2144 could be replaced, but I had space in the Aug 4/Sep 1, 5:00p m -7:00pm 9 Main car and who needs the inconvenience of breaking in a new sewing machine...next time I’ll try to remember the embroidery attachment.) Make A Difference (M.A.D.) Mondays If I felt my house had really been in danger would I have packed Every Monday, 10: 30am -4:30pm 9 & 14 Main Modern Quilt Group 4th Tues more stuff? I honestly don’t know. We definitely would have figured Aug 25/Sep 22, 5: 00p m -8:00pm 9 Main out how to take the blown glass cake top from our wedding cake. Open Sew 1st & 4th Tues Would I have grabbed some of my favorite fabric? How could I Aug4&25/Sep1&22, 10: 30am -4:30pm 9 Main choose? (What about the sad fabrics that got left behind?) What about those ‘mostly’ finished projects? I guess I’d actually have an Open Stitch, Knit & Crochet Every Thursday, 5: 00p m -8:00pm 14 Main excuse for not finishing them. Joking aside, I hope I am never really put in that position of The Applique Society 1st Thurs Aug 6/Sep 3, 5:00p m -8:00pm 9 Main having to decide. What would you take with you? Perhaps you should give it a bit of thought…and make a plan.
