Today begins the “Advent” season of the church year. It is like “January” in the calendar year, it is the beginning of a brand new year. The first half of the year teaches us about the life of the Savior, and the second half teaches us what life in the Savior looks like. (The second half is often called the time of the Church.) WHAT IS "ADVENT"? "Advent" is the Church season four weeks before Christmas. Literally, "advent" comes from the Latin "advenio," meaning "to come." It is the season when we await the birth of the Messiah as the Old Testament believers awaited. It is a time of preparation and anticipation, as the excitement of the approaching Christmas season gets closer. In Advent, we are reminded of John the Baptist's words to "repent and believe" in Jesus, the Savior God sent to rescue us from our
•If you are used to celebrating Advent in worship, describe some of your memories about it. •What do you like about Advent? •What “mood” do you feel captures the Advent season? •What is your favorite Advent hymn? For our Advent preparation this year, we will be using the genealogies of Jesus. Peruse Luke 3:23-‐38. •What do you think of this passage? •How many names did you recognize? •How many stories do you know? “THE SON OF ADAM” Our focus today is on the phrase “the son of Adam.” The very first promise of a Savior came immediately after Adam and Eve fell into sin. Review the story by reading Genesis 3:1-‐24. •What do you know about the Garden of Eden? •Who is Satan? •Who tempted whom? Explain the relationship between the devil, Eve and Adam in the temptation and fall into sin.

Why does that make a difference? oWhat two things does God tell us about the Savior here? oWhat does Luke 3:38 teach us? oHow does Galatians 4:4 teach us that Jesus fulfills this promise? oHow does 1 John 3:8 teach us that Jesus fulfills this promise? oHow does the Devil harass you? How does Christ “crushing his head” help you? Note James 4:7, 1 Peter 5:8-‐9, Ephesians 6:10-‐13 oNote the final “crushing” of Satan’s head: Rev. 20:10.
ADAM v. CHRIST Another way the New Testament teaches us about Jesus is to compare Christ to Adam. Read Romans 5:12-‐21. List as many comparisons as you can.
Discuss this chart (would you add any other comparisons?)

Jesus is the promised offspring of Eve, a son of Adam, who crushed Satan’s head by His death on a cross. Spend some time this week thinking this through, so you understand the Biblical relationship, and the practical applications to your life.
