UNIT 1. THE AMAZING POWER OF JESUS Worship

DECORATING TIPS

Build a thematic backdrop to create a fun and exciting worship experience for your kids. Use three 4-foot-by-8-foot-by-2-inch insulation boards to create a simple sky backdrop. Paint each board with blue water-based paint.

Using a jigsaw, cut 2-inch insulation board to form trees and rolling hills. Paint green with a water-base paint.

Cut clouds out of cardboard or halfinch insulation boards. Paint white with water-based paint. Attach to backdrop with T-pins or hook and loop strips.

Create pinwheels by using colorful vinyl placmats. To add interest, vary the colors and patterns. Cut the placemat into a square. Once it is square, cut from each corner towards the center stopping just before the center. Do not cut through the center. Fold each corner in towards the center. Fold them one at a time and stack them on top of each other in the center. Using a upholstery tack or small nail with a large head, firmly attach pinwheel to a 1-inch dowel rod. Leaving room between the nail and dowel rod allows the pinwheel to spin. To create a base for dowel rods to stand by drilling 1-inch holes in a 2-foot-by-4-inch board.

SIMPLE IDEAS TO ENHANCE YOUR LEARNING SPACE •

Purchase small pinwheels from your local discount store. Turn a large foam cup upside down and push a pinwheel’s handle through the bottom of the cup. Line your stage area with the pinwheels.

Create large pinwheels from poster board. (See instructions above. Use a paper brad to secure the corners instead of upholstery tacks.) Tape pinwheels to the wall.

Cut poster board into large cloud shapes. Glue batting or cotton balls to cover both sides of the shape. Use fishing line to hang the clouds from the ceiling.

Have you ever been on a boat ride? If the sun is shining, and it isn’t windy, the boat just floats along very peacefully. (Move boat slowly and gently in front of you). Worship

(Set boat aside and pick up Bible.) After teaching many people about God, Jesus was tired. He said to His disciples, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” So, the disciples and Jesus got in a boat. Jesus rested in the back of the boat, and He fell asleep. Suddenly, a big storm came! Waves rocked the boat! Some waves crashed over the sides, and the boat began to fill with water! The disciples were very afraid, but Jesus was still asleep. (Open Bible and read Mark 4:38b.) The disciples woke Jesus up and said to him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?” Jesus stood up and spoke to the wind and the waves. He said, “Quiet! Be still.” The wind stopped, and the sea became still. Everything was calm. Jesus asked His disciples why they were afraid. The disciples didn’t need to be scared. Jesus was in the boat with them! Jesus’ disciples were amazed! (Open Bible and read Mark 4:41b.) They asked one another, “Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!” (Show Christ Focus slide.) Jesus can do things that people cannot do. Jesus is God’s Son, and He is powerful. Jesus is in charge of everything—even the wind and the sea. The disciples had never seen anything like that! The wind and the sea obeyed Jesus’ words! (Pick up boat.) The disciples did not need to be afraid because Jesus can tell the weather what to do! Jesus has power over all things—even over nature! When you are afraid during a storm, you can trust Jesus. Let’s pray together and thank Jesus for helping us. Jesus, thank You for helping the disciples and for helping us! Today we heard that Jesus can tell the weather what to do. Jesus calmed the storm when He was in the boat with His disciples. Let’s think about the different kinds of weather that God made. I’ll name some fun things to do outside, and you tell me the kind of weather you need. (Demonstrate each of the following as you speak.) If you need a sunny day, put your hands over your head to make a sun. If you need a rainy day, rub your hands together to sound like rain. If you need a snowy day, shiver like you are cold. Is everyone ready to play? (Name each of the following activities. God, thank You for people who go to other places and tell people about You. We pray that the boys and girls in Romania will learn about You and believe that Jesus is Your Son. Thank You that we can learn about You, too. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

God controls the weather, and He knows what we need. He made the world so that plants have sun and rain to help them grow. God made cold winters, hot summers, rainy days, and sunny days.

LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING Jesus taught people what God is like.

Jesus Calmed a Storm MARK 4:35-41; LUKE 8:22-25 Jesus had been teaching by the Sea of Galilee. In the evening Jesus told His disciples, “Let’s go to the other side of the lake.” The disciples and Jesus got in a boat. Jesus rested in the back of the boat and fell asleep. The wind began to blow. A large storm blew over the lake. Waves splashed against the boat, and water began to fill the boat. The men tried to sail the boat in the strong wind and waves. The disciples were afraid, but Jesus was still asleep in the back of the boat. The disciples woke Jesus. “Teacher!” they said. “We are going to die!” Jesus stood and spoke to the wind and the waves. He said, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind stopped blowing. The waves stopped. The lake was calm. Jesus said, “Why were you so afraid? Don’t you trust Me to take care of you?” Jesus’ disciples were amazed. They said, “Even the wind and the sea obey Jesus!” They knew that Jesus was not like any other man.
