BUTLER WOMEN’S SOCCER 2016 Game Notes

Butler at Marquette I October 23, 2016 I Milwaukee, Wis. I Valley Fields

MCDEVITT NAMED BIG EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

McDevitt helped anchor a Butler defense which limited Seton Hall to just two shots on goal and just one corner kick in the Bulldogs’ 2-1 victory on Sunday. The junior also provided the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute, taking a header from Serina Kashimoto as Butler scored its second BIG EAST win of the season.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

In the latest BIG EAST standings, Butler sits in seventh place with seven points, just one point behind St. Johns for a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. With three games to go, both Creighton and Marquette are ahead of the Bulldogs, with nine and 12 points, respectively. The ‘Dawgs earn three points for each conference win and one point for a tie.

UP TO THE TASK

Thursday night’s matchup will feature a game within a game with Shannon McDevitt and the Bulldog defense attempting to slow down Lauren Sullivan and the high-powered Creighton offense. Sullivan leads the BIG EAST and ranks in the top-20 nationally in multiple offensive categories. In addition to being the conference leader in goals and points, she is averaging 1.93 points per game and 0.79 goals per game, ranking her 11th and 12th in the nation. Reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Shannon McDevitt will look to anchor a Butler defense that has posted eight shutouts this season.

BUTLER BOWL

The Bulldogs are 5-4 at home this year. Three of the four setbacks featured a 1-0 final score in favor of the visitors.

SCORE FIRST

The Bulldogs are undefeated this season when they score the first goal of the contest.

READY... AIM... FIRE!

Paige Monaghan and Serina Kashimoto are responsible for half of Butler’s shots on the year. Monaghan has taken 56 shots, seven more than Kashimoto. Only five other players on the roster have hit double digits, giving BU a grand total of 204.

BACK ON TRACK

Butler’s 2-1 win against Seton Hall Sunday snapped the Bulldogs three-game losing streak and featured the team’s first goal since Sept. 24. BU amassed 18 shots in the match, four more than they had taken in their last three matches combined.

KASHIMOTO APPROACHING HISTORY

Serina Kashimoto leads the team in points (21) goals (8) and assists (5). To reach the single-season top ten list in the BU record book, Kashimoto will need three more goals, three more assists or seven more points. The 2015 Second Team All-American currently ranks ninth all-time with 16 career assists, she is just six points shy of 10th place in points.
