Dear Parents Re: Year 10 Exam Weeks 12 June – 23 June The purpose of the exam weeks is to introduce a number of important skills: revision, exam techniques, examination protocols, managing personal time and working under exam conditions. Students will be examined or assessed in every subject that they study and each subject area will hold an exam or assessment during exam week. English, Maths and Science exams will all be held in the school hall. A copy of the Year 10 examination timetable for core subjects is attached. The remaining subjects will take place in their timetabled classroom and timings will be agreed by their classroom teacher, a timetable of when these exams are going to take place will be given to students. Outlined below are the topic / skills which require revision for each subject area, along with the equipment that your child needs to bring with them for the examination. It is useful for your child to practise their revision techniques and you may want to support them in organising a revision timetable. Subject examination details: Art The students will complete the final piece for their Land and Sea project in exam conditions. BCS Students will sit a GCSE mock exam paper based on topics covered this year. These include customer relations, legal framework, ethics and social responsibility and different types of business organisations. Computing Students will be examined by a written paper on the theory covered this year. The topics will be: computer systems, computing hardware, software, networks, using binary, representation of data and programming. The Year 11 GCSE revision page on the college website has resources to support revision for the exam. Design Technology Students will complete a written exam appropriate to the subject discipline.

Drama Students will be sitting a GCSE mock exam based on the work covered this year. English Language and English Literature English Language – Students will be sitting a Language Paper 2 Section B writing exam. They should use their exercise books and notes from this year to revise. They can also use BBC Bitesize to revise non-fiction writing. English Literature – Students will sit a practice on their Modern Prose exam from Paper 2. They should revise the text studied by their class at the start of the year, either Lord of the Flies or An Inspector Calls. They can use BBC Bitesize to revise key characters and themes. Geography Prior to the exam, each student will have a lesson on how to revise and they will be given appropriate revision materials. The content covered in the exams will reflect the topics covered this year – coastal zone, restless earth History Students will complete two exam questions on civil rights in the USA, focusing on the events at Little Rock High School in 1957 and on the achievements of Martin Luther King in the 1960s. Revision materials will be put on Insight. Languages ( German, French and Spanish) Students will be assessed in listening, reading and writing skills on topics covered this year. Class teachers will discuss the content of the papers in more detail and how to best revise in advance of the exams. Mathematics Year 10 will undertake 2 examinations, each will be 1 hour 30 minutes long. There will be a calculator paper followed by a non-calculator. All students should bring the correct equipment for each exam, black pens, pencils, protractor, pair of compasses, ruler (metric) and calculator when appropriate. Each paper will only cover topics covered during year 10 and some number topics students will have been expected to have remembered from earlier years. Revision sessions will be provided by classroom teachers, students are expected to attend these when invited. Music Students will complete a 50 minute listening, aural and theory of music test which covers all the set works studied this year. Students will be provided with detailed revision notes. PE GCSE students will complete a 50 minute theory examination that will test students on all aspects of the theory syllabus covered in year 10. Students will be advised by their teacher which aspects of the syllabus will be tested. Photography The students will complete the final piece for their People’s Project project in exam conditions.

RE All students will be expected to revise for and complete a formal exam in religious studies. Student should use their exercise books to guide them in their revision. The content covered in the exams will reflect the GCSE topics covered this year. Science Students will sit three mock exams released by AQA covering the year 10 Combined Science content of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These will be taken in exam conditions in the main hall and students should make sure that they bring the correct equipment including a calculator. These exams will be marked by the teachers but the marks will be uploaded to the AQA exam board allowing for thorough feedback with comparison to national performance on the same papers.
