Matagorda Peninsula Army Airfield (72TA) On July 30, 1941, the United States Army declared its eminent domain over the area. You can even find civil war artifacts from the battles that occurred on December 29, 1863, and January 21-25, 1864. Surfers sometime refer to this area as " Gorda " for some of the Gulf Coast 's best waves. With sandbars stretching up and down coast it makes it an ideal area to surf.
