Hoppers bring new life to Twin Oaks BY APRIL
G. JACKSON He called his wife from the driveway of Twin Oaks last year. “I found it,” he said. Keith Hopper recalls how he “stumbled” upon the historic antebellum residence in Humboldt last July. The Civil War history buff was hooked upon his first visit and the more he learned about Twin Oaks, the more certain he was it was the place he and wife, Terrie, would buy. They had a dream of having an antebellum style home and had even looked into building a replica when Hopper pulled into the Main Street driveway and fell in love. Two people from the Humboldt area are being charged with multiple counts of rape and abuse of children, according to Gibson County Sheriff Chuck Arnold. Sheriff’s department investigators say three children, two under the age of eight years old, are believed to be the victims. Anthony L. Alford, 33, and Hilda M. Alford, 27, of 154 Highway 186 North, Humboldt, are charged with multiple counts of rape of a child, aggravated rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery and child abuse in a series of incidents involving minors. School board spotlights Stigall Primary students BY DANNY WADE Dozens of parents and students from Stigall Primary School attended the school board meeting last Thursday night. They were there to show board members what is being taught and learned at Stigall. Courtney Martin, a parent of a kindergartener and 7th grader, addressed the board and the large crowd that filled the library at Humboldt High School. She showed a report card for her kindergartener and explained how in depth it was, especially for such a young child. “It shows what students are required in math, reading and social science,” Martin said. “By the end of kindergarten, my child
