Volleyball 2003
Since its founding in 1855, William Paterson University has grown to become a comprehensive, public, liberal arts institution committed to academic excellence and student success. Accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, it offers 30 undergraduate and 19 graduate degree programs as well as professional development programs through its five colleges: Arts and Communication, Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Nearly 11,000 full- and part-time students from a diversity of backgrounds are enrolled at the University. Occupying a 370acre, wooded hillside campus, the University is located in the hills of suburban Wayne, New Jersey, within an hour of the ocean, the mountains, the Meadowlands, and New York City. As a state university, William Paterson offers students the value of a first-rate education at a fraction of the cost experienced by those at private colleges and universities. It also offers a wide variety of student activities, modern on-campus housing, and the most up-to-date educational facilities. In addition, the Pioneer athletic programs have produced a proud tradition. William Paterson has 17 athletic teams which compete in NCAA Division III and the New Jersey Athletic Conference intercollegiate sports: Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Swimming, Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, and Women’s Volleyball. The Baseball Team won national championships in 1992 and 1996, Men’s Track and Field standout Rob Hargrove took the 2002 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field 200-meter dash title, The Mmen’s Basketball Team claimed three consecutive NJAC titles (2000-02) and played in the 1999 and 2001 Final Fours, and The Softball Team captured the 2003 New Jersey Athletic Conference championship.

2003 PREVIEW
Jen Cirello
With much of last season’s squad returning, the Pioneers are poised to improve upon last season’s 19-11 record, their second consecutive New Jersey City University Tournament championship and their first appearance in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals since 1995. “We were really young last year, but our players really matured quickly,” said Ferrarella, who won her 400th career match in 2002. “With most of our team coming back, I’d like to think we can be even better than a year ago.” Nine players return from last season’s squad, including standout outside hitters Jen Cirello and Lauren Shears. Shears was a five-time NJAC Rookie of the Week and the only freshman named to the allconference first team after leading the team in kills per game (4.45), ranking second in attack percentage (.281) and third in digs (3.51). Cirello (3.95 digs), meanwhile, battled injuries much of last fall but is a potential All-NJAC candidate if she stays healthy.

2003 PREVIEW At middle hitter, a trio of promising prospects return in junior Katie Lord and sophomores Kerri Lindenthaler and Viviane Abreu. Lord plays a solid allaround game and ranked fourth on the team in digs (2.91). Lindenthaler did not see a lot of court time last season, but entered training camp primed to play a big role this season. Meanwhile, Abreu leads all returning players in blocks (0.60) and should improve with a year of experience to her credit. In addition, sophomore newcomer Kelly Streicher is a player Ferrarella has high regard for and should see quality time this fall. Senior Tara Worth will be counted upon to provide consistency at opposite hitter after seeing action in only 30 games last Lauren Shears year, averaging 1.03 kills and 1.13 digs. Providing she stays injury-free, the Pioneers should get strong contributions from her. Freshman Melissa Baranowski will provide depth. At setter, senior co-captain Deni Sobieck enters her second season as a starter. One of the most consistent members of the team, she helped two teammates earn All-NJAC honors in 2002 with her selfless play, averaging a teamand career-high 9.47 assists while tying for the team lead with 0.45 service aces. The main question is who will provide depth here. Sophomore Jessica McKenna moves from opposite hitter to back up Sobieck and possibly become the setter of the future.
Deni Sobieck
Finally, senior co-captain Brenda Kaus will again line up as the Pioneers’ libero, or defensive specialist. Few play the game with
Kaus’ abandon, as she routinely digs balls that otherwise appear headed onto the hardwood. Last season, she averaged a career-best 4.13 digs while playing in all 100 games. Sophomore Marissa deMedeiros and freshman Nancy Perez offer capable depth.

COACHING STAFF
SANDY FERRARELLA Head Coach Year: 25th Record: 403-263 Alma Mater: William Paterson ‘75 Degree: B.A. in Physical Education During the days edging closer to one of the great accomplishments of her coaching career, many thought that when Sandy Ferrarella captured her 400th victory, the milestone itself would represent her most on-court memorable moment. Sure, the victory itself was unforgettable: the Pioneers winning the New Jersey City University Tournament a few ticks before midnight last Oct. 19. Yet whether it gave her her first or 400th victory, the number was insignificant compared to the aftermath. There were current players embracing her after the match, their parents coming from the stands to congratulate her. Then there were the phone calls from past players that made her realize that, more than just being one of the most successful coaches in Division III in terms of wins and losses, she has left an indelible impression on those she has coached through the years. “It’s been a long time I’ve been coaching, but you remember all the people that have gone through the program,” Ferrarella said after the 2002 season. “A lot of my players are coaching now and have become successful. You realize how much you affected them.” Ferrarella’s devotion to her program has consistently made it one of the NJAC’s best. Since 1979, the Pioneers have produced three conference championships, the last coming in 1991 when she was named the NJAC Coach of the Year. They have won 18 or more matches 10 times. Overall, her career record is 403-263.

COACHING STAFF Meanwhile, four of her past players have been inducted into the William Paterson University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame: Laurie Kearns Cochran (‘85), Gwen Van Winkle (‘87), Cheryl StetzBamert (‘91) and Sue Paskas (‘99). Ferrarella has been a part of William Paterson volleyball since her days as a student-athlete in 1971, starring for four years. She then served as an assistant coach from 1975-78 before being elevated into the position of head coach, a labor of love that continues until this day. Part of her duties includes organizing the successful William Paterson University High School Volleyball Tournament each fall. Also an assistant director of admissions at the University, Ferrarella resides in Hewitt.
SUSAN PASKAS Assistant Coach Year: Fifth Alma Mater: William Paterson ‘97 Degree: B.S. in Exercise and Movement Science Watching Paskas in action, it is clear she took mental notes during her playing days under Ferrarella. There is an obvious easiness to the dynamic between herself and the players. This is the very reason she succeeds in getting the very best from each of her players. When she returned to the staff last season after a oneyear hiatus, several Pioneers played to their peak as the team won 19 games and reached the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament semfinals for the first time since 1995, her sophomore year at William Paterson. This included then-freshman outside hitter Lauren Shears, a five-time NJAC Rookie of the Week and the only first-year player on the all-conference first team. Then again, considering Paskas’ volleyball background, her coaching skill is not surprising. She earned All-NJAC honors three times during her four-year career from 1994-97. As a freshman, she helped William Paterson win 20 games and reach the NJAC Tournament final. For this she earned entry into the William Paterson University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame last November, joining her brother and former football star Craig. They are the lone brother-sister tandem in the Hall of Fame. A Vernon resident who graduated from the University in 1997 with a B.S. in exercise and movement science, she is employed as a professional fitness consultant.

2002 IN REVIEW SHEARS, FROONJIAN SPARK FIRST NJAC SEMIFINALS APPEARANCE SINCE 1995 Although she put a young team on the court, 24th-year coach Sandy Ferrarella enjoyed one of her most successful seasons. With a lineup featuring a freshman and two sophomores, the Pioneers (19-11, 4-4 NJAC) reached the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 1995 while also getting Ferrarella her 400th career victory. Here are other highlights from the 2002 season: • Outside hitter Lauren Shears took the NJAC by storm, earning Rookie of the Week honors five times. She was the only freshman named to the All-NJAC first team as she led the team in kills per game (4.45), which placed her third in the conference and among the Top 30 nationally. In addition, she was named to the all-tournament team at both the New Jersey City University and Vassar College tournaments. • Middle hitter Jen Froonjian, the lone senior on the squad, was selected to the All-NJAC second team. She paced William Paterson in hitting percentage (.301) and Lauren Shears (left) and Jen Froonjian blocks per game (0.82). • The Pioneers won the New Jersey City Tournament for the second consecutive season after winning four matches spaced out over almost 12 hours. They defeated New Jersey City in the title match, three games to one, as Shears had 23 kills and 20 digs and setter Deni Sobieck added 34 assists and 15 digs. The championship match helped Ferrarella notch her 400th triumph. • Sobieck and libero Brenda Kaus provided steady play and strong leadership. Sobieck finished fifth in the NJAC with 9.47 assists per game, while co-captain Kaus averaged 4.13 digs per game, ranking eighth in the league. • Middle hitter Katie Lord (1.51 kills, 3.94 digs per game) and outside hitter Jen Cirello (3.95 digs per game), both juniors, give the Pioneers two rising stars with two years of eligibility remaining.
