Garrison Keillor, on his "Writer’s Almanac" on Na onal Public Radio reminds us that Father's Day goes back "to a Sunday morning in May of 1909, when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was si ng in church in Spokane, Wash‐ ington, listening to a Mother's Day sermon. She thought of her father who had raised her and her siblings a er her mother died in childbirth, and she thought that fathers should get recogni on, too. So she asked the minister of the church if he would deliver a sermon honoring fathers on her father's birthday, which was coming up in June, and the minister did.
Saturday, June 18 2pm in Sanctuary Everyone Is Invited
And the tradi on of Father's Day caught on, though rather slowly. Mother's Day became an official holiday in 1914; Father's Day, not un l 1972. Moth‐ er's Day is s ll the busiest day of the year for florists, restaurants and long distance phone companies. Father's Day is the day on which the most collect phone calls are made. So it is obvious that Dads are second place to Mom’s.
GAP God Answers Prayers Tuesday Mornings Conference Room 10am
The most common image that Jesus used in describing God was that of "Father." It makes me think that Joseph must have been a very special kind of father. In the Jewish home it was the father who had the primary respon‐ sibility for his son's religious instruc on. Of course we know that Jesus had a unique rela onship with God. S ll, I have to believe that Joseph, though barely men oned in the Gospel narra ve, was probably an in‐ fluen al role model for Jesus.
