BEAUTY YOUR HAIR
Beach hair basics Caring for and protecting your hair in the summer is just as important as SPF for your skin. By Melissa Lamkin

Cleanse
Clean hair to keep it manageable and detangled. Shampoo twice a week with a gentle, clarifying shampoo to clean out the salt and sand in summer hair. “Shampoo should be applied by rubbing product between the hands and distributing only onto the scalp, and simply rinsing,” suggests Ouidad, the curl expert and creator of Ouidad hair care products. “Rinsing automatically neutralizes the hair and causes a detangling effect,” she says. Try not to rub hair while rinsing — it tends to tangle the hair. Finish with a gentle conditioner. What we like: (shown, from left to right) Infusium 23 Frizz Control Revit-

Style
You can get sandy, shiny, wind-blown beach hair — even if you’re not at the beach. “Those with fine hair should apply a body building product, like a volumizing mousse or a spray gel to clean, wet hair,” says Carmine Minardi, owner and style director of Minardi Salon in New York City. “Use your blow dryer on the lowest speed, to keep your hair from getting too straight, and dry while scrunching and tousling with fingers. Use a smoothing cream if you have coarser hair. Finish off the look by applying a light cream based pomade.” What we like: (shown, from left to right) Phyto Plage Protective Styling Gel, Matrix Wet Trix Shine Flood Gel, Matrix Curl Life Spiraling Spray Gel, K-Pak Curl Revitalizer Spray, Bumble South Surf Spray.

Protect
Protection prolongs your color. A deep conditioning treatment will replenish your hair with strength. Apply a leave-in conditioner every morning to prevent dryness — especially before exposing your hair to the rays of the sun. “Although it is not necessary for daily use, you should apply an SPF to your hair when you are going to be in the sun for an extended period of time to protect it from changing color and overdrying,” says Julia Macheras, a stylist at the Avon Salon & Spa in New York City.
