We  are  meant  to  connect  with  our  heart. • What  does  it  mean  to  be  intimately  connected  with  someone? • What  does  it  mean  to  be  intimately  connected  with  God? • From  what  well  are  you  drawing  your  sustenance?

CRUSADES:

SERMON NOTES 06-14-15

Crusades  &  Universities

APPETIZER: Context in History High  point  of  Medieval  Scholasticism: -‐  U.  of  Bologna,  Italy  c.  1088       -‐  U.  of  Paris,  France  c.  1150 -‐  U.  of  Oxford,  England  c.  1167     -‐  U.  of  Cambridge,  England  c.  1209 St.  Dominic  &  St.  Francis  emerge  during  this  time  period

DINE-IN: Knowledge & Dependence TWO  MAJOR  THEOLOGIANS: ➡ Anselm  (1033-1109  AD):  Educated  in  France.  Became   Archbishop  of  Canterbury  in  England •

Ontological  Argument*:  Logic  proof  for  existence  of  God.

Substitutionary  atonement  –  belief  that  Jesus  died  to  pay   humanity’s  moral  debt  to  God

➡ Thomas  Aquinas  (1225-1274  AD):  Dominican  Priest,  born  in   Italy,  taught  in  Paris.  Wrote  Summa  Theologica •

Cosmological  Argument**:  Every  being  is  either  a  dependent   being  or  self-‐existent.  Not  all  can  be  dependent  -‐>  there  must   exist  a  self-‐existent  being  (God).

Knowledge  is  never  meant  to  stand  alone. “...But  knowledge  puffs  up  while  love  builds  up.” -  I  Corinthians  8:1   www.journeyfranklin.com

★ Established  on  complete  misunderstanding  of  the  Gospel  of  Jesus ★ Pope  Innocent  III  -‐  Says  God  wants  them  to  conquer  Jerusalem   (Holy  Land).    Forgives  all  sins  of  soldiers  `ighting  for  Church. ★ 4th  Crusade  =  Greatest  crime  against  humanity  (1200  AD) • Roman  Catholic  Church  turns  on  Eastern  Orthodox  Church:   crusaders  rape  &  pillage  Greek  Orthodox  Christians • No  reconciliation  until  1960! Think  about  the  boy  reaching  out  to  invite  the  crying  girl  into  the   dance.   • When  was  a  time  God  reached  out  for  you?   • What  would  it  look  like  for  you  to  reach  out  for  someone  else?

TAKE-OUT:

Read  Psalm  63:1-8  every  day  this  week.  Strike  up  a  conversation   with  God  after  reading  it.  How  does  it  make  you  feel? Continue  to  let  conviction  be  your  guide.  If  you  see  someone  in  need   of  help,  reach  out  with  the  love  you  have  received.  If  you  are  in  need   of  help,  let  someone  know.  And  remember,  You  are  a  child  of  God! *For  more  info  on  Anselm’s  Ontological  Argument: • http://www.iep.utm.edu/ont-‐arg/   • http://www.princeton.edu/~grosen/puc/phi203/ontological.html **For  more  info  on  St.  Thomas’  Cosmological  Argument: • www.richmond-‐philosophy.net/rjp/rjp20_samuel.php   • www.scandalon.co.uk/philosophy/cosmological_aquinas.htm

QUOTES/SCRIPTURE…

The  world  has  varying  degrees  of  beauty  in  it.  This  implies  that  an   ultimate  standard  of  perfection  exists.   -  Thomas  Aquinas But  knowledge  puffs  up  while  love  builds  up.

-  I  Corinthians  8:1

You,  God,  are  my  God,  earnestly  I  seek  you;  I  thirst  for  you,  my  whole   being  longs  for  you,  in  a  dry  and  parched  land  where  there  is  no   water.      I  have  seen  you  in  the  sanctuary  and  beheld  your  power  and   your  glory.  Because  your  love  is  better  than  life,  my  lips  will  glorify   you.    I  will  praise  you  as  long  as  I  live,  and  in  your  name  I  will  lift  up   my  hands.    I  will  be  fully  satis`ied  as  with  the  richest  of  foods;  with   singing  lips  my  mouth  will  praise  you.    On  my  bed  I  remember  you;  I   think  of  you  through  the  watches  of  the  night.    Because  you  are  my   help,  I  sing  in  the  shadow  of  your  wings.    I  cling  to  you;  your  right   hand  upholds  me. -  Psalm  63:1-8 To  most  people  God  is  an  inference,  not  a  reality.    He  is  a  deduction   from  the  evidence  which  they  consider  adequate,  but  He  remains   personally  unknown…   -  A.W.  Tozer,  Pursuit  of  God The  worshipping  heart  does  not  create  its  Object.  It  `ind  Him  here   when  it  wakes  from  its  moral  slumber  in  the  morning  of  its   regeneration.   -  A.W.  Tozer,  Pursuit  of  God Cease  striving  and  know  that  I  am  God;  I  will  be  exalted  among  the   nations,  I  will  be  exalted  in  the  earth. -  Psalms  46:10
