Analysis of the ESV 

The ESV has become one of the most popular versions in use today even though it was first published in 2001 – very new for a Bible translation.

Analysis of the ESV 

The ESV is a revision of the Revised Standard Version.  RSV

was translated by the National Council of Churches and was considered liberal by most evangelicals.  Bob Jones University: “When we teach the content of the Bible, we naturally study apassage in the Greek Testament. To aid the students in understanding that passage, we will take to class the King James Bible, which often gives an exact rendering of the Greek. Sometimes we will consult some other conservative translation, such as the American Standard Version of 1901 or the New American Standard Bible (not the liberal R[evised] S[tandard] V[ersion]), which at times gives the most accurate rendering of the Greek.” (http://www.bbccromwell.org/Seminary_Articles/Analysis_ESV.pdf) www.RandyWhiteMinistries.org

Analysis of the ESV  The

ESV is a revision of the Revised Standard Version.  From

the preface of the RSV: “The King James Version of the New Testament was based upon a Greek text that was marred by mistakes, containing the accumulated errors of fourteen centuries of manuscript copying…” (http://www.ncccusa.org/newbtu/aboutrsv.ht ml)

 It

is important to realize that the ESV is not a new translation, but a revision of the RSV. www.RandyWhiteMinistries.org

Analysis of the ESV  The

ESV should be suspect for theological bias based on its editorial board and publisher.  Crossway

Publishers is the leading publisher of reformed theology (Academic editors must be Calvinist).

 The

oversight committee appears to be 100% Reformed in theology, including JI Packer & Wayne Grudem. www.RandyWhiteMinistries.org

Use of “Man” 

Psalm 1 – “The singular Hebrew word for man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person”

Why the footnote? Isn’t the singular Hebrew word for man (ish) used here because…the Hebrew uses the singular Hebrew word for man?

Failure to use italics 

Genesis 3:6 her husband who was with her  This

destroys Paul’s argumentation for male pastors in 1 Timothy 2:14

John 8:28 – I am He

Romans 5:16 – one man or one trespass?  The

reader needs the ability to know when interpretations have been made.

1 Timothy 4:13 – Public reading or simply reading?

I would reject the ESV on this issue alone. I insist that my English Bible show me man’s insertions. www.RandyWhiteMinistries.org

Prophetic Scriptures poorly handled  Crossway

refuses to publish books on prophecy.  Genesis 49:10  Why

is there a tribute rather than Shiloh?  Why is the tribute redirected toward Judah?  Daniel  Why

9:25-26

“an anointed one?”  Why the timetable difference?  How is one to distinguish between the prince in v. 26 with that of v. 25?

Prophetic Scriptures poorly handled  Micah

5:2

 Why

did they translate a plural into a singular?

 Why

did they translate “eternal” into “ancient?”

Allergy to dispensationalism  Ephesians

1:7-10 – the timing of the revelation of the mystery, in Christ or in Himself? (In light of Ephesians 3:4-9)
